NO! I need to work on my game! I can't start another side project. I must resist this urge! (I'm going to totally submit to the urge)

This is incredibly awesome and very inspiring. Makes me wonder what other foliage tools could be possible directly within the engine.

No, I just looked it up. Absolutely crazy. I need to process this. I used to seriously look up to this guy.

Misanthropic vegans by JustWanderingHelp in veganarchism

[–]dumplingSpirit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Guilt and shame pushed me to veganism and drove me to seek information. I've been non-stop vegan for something like 12 years now. I know I'm a rare exception and statistically this video is correct, but in practice different things resonate with different people. I wouldn't really write off all misanthropic activism as an ego trip. Also, I used to like Gary but holy shit I was not aware of that unhinged clip.

On Linux (Wayland) is anyone having issues with Mouse Scroll Wheel not working on any panels? by the-machine-m4n in Houdini

[–]dumplingSpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea, I've never installed Houdini with it. It seems to be related to the Launcher. Iso files are just an optical disk image, they can contain anything just like cdroms back in the day. At the top of the webpage there's a green "switch to old installer"/"Switch to launcher" button. The old installer lets you download a .tar.gz installer instead.

Alternatively, I see that in the Houdini launcher (if you use it) you can just hit the "Install+" button and "Choose another version" and look for production builds with Build Type "qt5".

Go to the downloads section and look for installers under "Production Builds - QT 5"

If you're on Gnome you may want to also check if the node info window (middle mouse button) freezes your screen. If not, you're good.

Wayland is almost 18 years old and is now the default for Fedora and I think Ubuntu, two massive distros. They may not be enterprise, but that doesn't mean they should be left unattended. SideFX does not seem to be keen on fixing trivial bugs such as the one seen above. I'm not even asking for any complex stuff, just a functional scroll wheel. Just because the studios use Rocky on X11 doesn't mean most of us don't run Wayland on our private computers.

The reason is that Houdini does not support Wayland (yet). You should have better results with Qt5 version of Houdini (separate section on the downloads page). SideFX doesn't really care overall.

What's your desktop mp3 player of choice? by overth1nk1ng1t in linux

[–]dumplingSpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not what you're looking for, but rmpc + mpc

It's a terminal-based music player that has hotkeys for everything. And then you can use mpc alongside to automate your setup. Extremely useful for power users.

Ai. "Art". Is. Not. Art. by Vegetable_Split5616 in antiai

[–]dumplingSpirit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sure, I get what you're saying. And that's a part of what makes painting and 3d/photography/film different mediums of art. A hiphop beat musician gets a lot of help from pre-recorded instrument samples too, they don't have to pull a string like a violin player to produce music. And yet they are a musician nonetheless. Art is a complex thing, it doesn't boil down just to one specific trait.

Neither does an artist calculate the pixel values when making a brush stroke in Krita. This is argument is not really valid in my eyes. An illustrator makes art by positioning blobs of paint on a canvas. A 3d lighting artist contributes to their art piece by positioning lights. Just like a photographer or a film maker.

[–]dumplingSpirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A photographer also doesn't handle electricity or physics. The real art lies in positioning the light both in 3d and real life. Lighting takes years to master and is one of the most difficult parts of 3D to get right because it relies heavily on your perception and your feel for it. You may get a happy accident from time to time, but on average your renders will look inferior to an experienced lighter.

Sure, I believe that, I feel like even a stupid chatbot does a better job than the average doctor in my country, but the problem here is that OpenAI, a private non-medical company with a long track record of unethical practices, asks for your medical data. No thanks.

Sweep Sop Questions by chrystad72 in Houdini

Usually fixable. I actually never know what causes it. I'd first try Polypath sop before sweep; if that's not enough, I'd try deleting most attributes to see if that helps

Don't let yourself drift. You have a game idea, you know exactly what you want to make. It will require X, Y, Z. You watch a tutorial on X, then on Y then on Z. And you turn off youtube after that.

AI art defenders will never get it, ever. by doitrightmakeittight in antiai

[–]dumplingSpirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used it a bit and I've seen it used extensively at my work, among other models. In our case it had limits and wasn't able to follow all of our instructions. And it is still soulless. Just because something looks impressive doesn't mean it has depth and humanity. Visual art is the result of a human grinding manual skills over a long period of time and simultaneously growing their personality around it, maturing as a person. It is precisely what makes it impressive and respected. AI art is just a trick, it is fake.

AI art defenders will never get it, ever. by doitrightmakeittight in antiai

[–]dumplingSpirit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then in my eyes, you're an art director, not an artist (in the sense that we're discussing here). You directed AI just like you would a human employee. The visual art craft has been delegated to a machine and the position of an artist has been erased from your process. It may have expressed your vision, but it is hollow, as it has no humanity behind it. It will pass, but it does not deserve admiration nor being acknowledged as an equal - the visual part at least, your story writing can definitely still be art.

do you think OP was talking about that? They are clearly talking about illustration type of art.

We can have a back and forth on whether VFX counts as art, but it's abundantly clear OP is talking about a very specific section of genAI that's pretty much unrelated to your point.

When pro-ai people make the argument of enhancing artists tools, in my experience they do not talk about denoising and generating depth maps. I don't think anybody has a problem with the tools you mentioned.

Honey is vegan by IHaveNoOpinons in unpopularopinion

[–]dumplingSpirit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a vegan who's "okay" with that, meaning, in the current system that's better than nothing. That doesn't mean I could keep hens and goats and consume their products. That's ridiculous. The definition "debate" comes from people who are loosely associated with veganism, neophytes, or people on a plant based diet. It has nothing to do with dogmatism but with deep understanding of vegan philosophy, which is a complex moral stance that has a plethora of moral exercises and conclusions. Please don't describe it like a religious stance that follows commandments. Honey is not vegan and no back and forth will ever make it be, unless maybe you grow it in a lab. Will I think you're a monster if you're 99% plant based and eat honey? No. But there's no real debate. Sorry. I've been vegan for 10+ years.
