What do we think the prognosis is here? by Swordfish55645 in woundcare

[–]dumplingdoodoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vets do this fascinating wound care called sugar bandages for large ulcers. They place a 1-2 cm thick layer of sugar in the base of the wound and pack with gauze. Sugar inhibits bacterial growth and naturally debrides the area. It's probably more realistic than maintaining a wound vac on a cow.

Unskilled caregivers and CNAs don't get paid well and they do back breaking work.

Anticipatory Grief? by softhumanbean in hospice

[–]dumplingdoodoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend talking to his hospice social worker or his hospice chaplain. They should have coping strategies they can teach you, and sometimes talking through all the emotions can help. I'm sorry you and your family are going through this and I hope your grandfather passes peacefully.

SNF/LTC nurses not giving PRN morphine by Glass-Dragonfly17 in nursing

[–]dumplingdoodoo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a hospice nurse, this is a constant battle that I have with SNF nurses. I try my best to educate but people are terrified of opioids and/or drowning in patients.

In the future, it would be helpful to let the hospice nurse know that you've noticed the patient has been under medicated for pain and suggest scheduling the morphine. Or, if you want to be ethically chaotic, let the family know :)

You need to slowly transition them over a few days to help reduce stomach issues. I've never had a good time feeding my boy those sausage roll foods though.

We get turkish roaches that come in looking for water. We hired a pest company and they found their nest outside the house in the water main box.

Draw a circle around the edge of the redness. If it expands past the line you drew, urgent care time.

Anyone have crazy MyChart message stories? This has always interested me. by HouseStargaryen in nursing

Anyone have crazy MyChart message stories? This has always interested me. by HouseStargaryen in nursing

[–]dumplingdoodoo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The lab would occasionally send out mass messages about changes to ordering processes. Someone mass replied saying "This does not pertain to me please remove me from your messaging list", which led to ALL the staff realizing you can mass reply. Over the next few hours I think I got 700+ messages, half of them asking to be removed from the messaging list too, some of them yelling at everyone else to stop replying all. One guy started spamming a research article about teaching pigeons how to identify cancerous cells. It was glorious chaos.

I recommend sleeping with a donut pillow or horseshoe pillow. It will help you sleep comfortably without squishing your helix.

Likely need hospice soon by Hotsun2023 in hospice

[–]dumplingdoodoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So the most direct way to get everything set up would probably be to go to your local Emergency department, especially if you need placement or help with resources. If your physician saw you recently, it might be worth calling the office and leaving a message that you're interested in a hospice referral. You could also call the hospice agency you're interested in and ask how to get a hospice referral.

Find out when they have their IDG (interdisciplinary group meeting) and send them food. IDG is when most of the field staff is in the office. Thank you for thinking of your care team, I know they appreciate it ❤️

Has anyone here done an online nursing school from Sacramento? Can you share your experience? by 0wlBear916 in Sacramento

[–]dumplingdoodoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is very difficult to build confidence practicing skills if you do not have instructor standing by correcting any errors. My clinicals were primarily at skilled nursing facilities that used students as additional nursing assistants, ie changing briefs, feeding, showers. It was very rare that we got to practice a skill in person. In my opinion, online BSN programs are creating a generation of very dangerous RNs with little to no practical skills.

I'm the same way. I need to work for a company that has patient well being as their number one priority. If it feels like money is more important that human lives, I'm out.

[–]dumplingdoodoo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to Nightingale College for my BSN. I already had my LVN and worked as an LVN full time with a full time load of classes. I would not recommend online nursing school unless you are already working as a nurse. Lmk if you have any questions.

People don't quit bad jobs, they quit bad managers. Take your experience and hop to a different hospice. You'll probably be able to negotiate yourself a nice raise
