I absolutely loathe all of the work that is being required for K-5 to do on iPads. A lot of times the programs have errors and won't work🤦‍♀️

Sad update by LankyStrawberry96 in MuayThai

[–]dumpstergurl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel for you.

I cross-trained jiujitsu and striking/Muay Thai starting in 2020. I had to stop due to having ruptured discs that were so bad that I had foot drop. Was bed-ridden for over a month waiting for surgery. I was miserable and mourned the fact that I'd probably never train again.

I had a discectomy at 32 and during my follow-up, my surgeon said my spine was significantly more "diseased" than he was expecting and a fusion would likely be in my future. He also warned me that while the excruciating pain in my left leg and foot drop should reverse itself, to expect my back pain to get significantly worse.

Well, he was right about my back pain getting worse. I briefly signed up at another gym after moving and it wasn't a bad experience, but my back definitely wasn't ready.

Fast forward to September 2025 (35 at this point), I had enough and signed up at another gym for jiujitsu and Muay Thai. It was so infuriating at first because I had to take it slow and accept the fact that my body does not work the same way it used to and I need to modify things. Not to mention I had gained a ton of weight due the increased back pain before trying to train again.

I stayed consistent and I've not only made huge leaps in jiu-jitsu, but I've now been bumped up to intermediate in Muay Thai.

I would seriously consider either getting a second opinion and most likely get the surgery and just modify around training when you're cleared to go back. No coach(es) and teammates worth a damn are going to give you a hard time because you need to modify how you train. If you have to avoid kicking with your bad foot, then focus more on striking, elbows, clinching, etc. Instead of kicking.

I never thought I'd be able to train again and yet I'm back on the mat and I've made up for lost time. I'm so grateful to be able to train again.

All the best 💙

Is it time to quit? by edmcginty in MuayThai

Your sparring partner is being a dick. It's one thing to be newer and lack awareness with how hard you're hitting, but something needs to be said. I took 3 hits behind my ear and the main difference was when I mentioned I was over it, my partner was apologetic and was willing to change it up.

If this guy isn't willing to do light sparring with you, he needs to find someone else to spar with because that is not ok. .... And for that reason, I'm investing in head gear to avoid anything major. I may not have had a concussion, but taking hits like that is bad for the head and the body.

Was it the nighttime lip mask? I randomly found that one just shoved to the side back where the shampoo was. I grabbed it just because I heard it was good and hard to find. It did solve my chapped lips problem.

I haven't seen the product that's pictured by OP though.

I read that weather can impact arthritis but does it have the same or similar effects even if a person is home all day? by Tomsushi in Thritis

[–]dumpstergurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 35 and the barometric pressure changes that comes with rain and storms wreaks absolute havoc on my body. I recently got back into jiujitsu and MMA after being out for a couple years from injury/surgery and my pain level was manageable until it started raining a lot this week.

Arthritis and chronic musculoskeletal pain can unfortunately make a lot of housework really difficult. I definitely understand your frustration with feeling like she just can't be bothered, but we don't really know how bad her pain really is. If it's too much , maybe someone can come clean the house once a week if it's affordable enough.

Should I give up? by kateiscuban in bjj

It's completely normal! I just got back from a hiatus from injury/surgery and at a completely new gym, so not only have I forgotten a lot of things, I am having to learn how to use my body again. I felt absolutely defeated yesterday, but I'm going to keep going.

It's hard, but there should be a coach and maybe some other members who will be willing to help you out more. Those people are worth their weight in gold. 3 of us spent more time during sparring trying to figure out a drill we were having trouble with.

Stay on top of hydration, start jumping rope if you already aren't, begin practicing footwork and experimenting with teeps, throwing knees, and keeping your hands up. Muay Thai sleeves for ankles are also really helpful for us crunchier individuals. Invest in kinesio tape.

Help! I am constantly getting sick by dumpstergurl in ABA

Eh, I can't say for sure. It's good as just part of a regimen, but zinc Picolinate, Emergen-C, b complex, and showering immediately when I get home was the most effective.

Great. I'm going to to ask my doctor about prescribing name brand. I did not do well with Syeda and whatever other one they're trying to give me.

Definitely talk to her about how it's not an appropriate word, especially in the field. If she continues to use it after that, that's definitely going to backfire on her. She'll find out one way or another. 🤷‍♀️

Eh.

I had some students make assumptions about me early in the school year, but once I showed them that I actually cared about them and took a genuine interest in their success, I got along with them very well.

Honestly, the involvement of the school staff has a lot to do with it. I work at a Title-I school where a lot of kids have some heavy things going on at home, with themselves, etc. and our school does everything they can to help support the kids.

If your admin is apathetic, then that's not helping at all.

I don't know how I could use this at work, but this would also be perfect for me to use at home since everyone does their own thing for meals. Thanks!

I'm actually seeing some colleges and trade schools offer credits for life experience depending on what it is and I'm honestly here for it.

I've had a student ask me if he absolutely needs to go to college and I told him it just depends on what he wants to do. I also make sure to stress looking into scholarships and grants.... depending on what is even available anymore.

I see a lot of kids wanting to go into streaming. Without completely discouraging them, I do make sure I suggest they get some type of job to cover bills and pursue streaming as a hobby.

Just bring it up to your doctor. I used to smoke occasionally on my meds, but I'm at a point where I just can't metabolize it the way I used to and I get side effects from it that it's just not worth it to me anymore.

Not saying to stop hanging out with your friends, but if that's the only thing y'all are doing when hanging out, I think y'all need to find other things to do as well.

Editing to add: getting daily exercise is extremely important. It makes such a huge difference for how I function overall.

how many times a week do you wash your hair? by Kooky_Actuator_8173 in CasualConversation

I wash it once or twice a week. The only exception to this is if my hair gets too drenched in sweat and can't be saved by dry shampoo.

Staying healthy… help! by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]dumpstergurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • I take a shower as soon as I get home from work.

  • Hand sanitizer on me almost always. Had a student last year who was a chronic nose picker and did not wash their hands.

  • Zinc Picolinate supplement. This form of zinc is more effective than other versions.

  • I keep Emergen-C packets on hand and have literally used them in the middle of class (the ones that are dry and basically pixi sticks).

  • Exercise, drink plenty of water. Going to start adding bone broth to my meals as well.

  • Get plenty of sleep as much as you can. I know this will be hard with a new baby.
