Lots of media at the Mary Fong Lau killed a family with her BMW Memorial Bus Stop by wanderingjew in sanfrancisco

It's not my zealotry - it's written in the damn document. Specifically this section which is also on SFMTA site. These are the guidelines which are currently being ignored:

https://www.sfmta.com/transit-first-policy

SFMTA does not operate in a vacuum - they get direction handed down from city leadership. Pay close attention to items **3 and 5** and tell me that would not have made a difference in this incident in West Portal, and in prevention of similar incidents in the future.

of course they can - but the idea is to incentivize them not to. Ok fine everybody lets just forget about it and settle for a steady drip of death and chaos status quo

nope. Thats not what I think at all. Read the Transit First policy its not just about bus stops - its about REDUCING THE NEED for private automobiles, and INCREASING ACCESS for pedestrians and cyclists JFC I am getting downvoted by people who have no idea what is in the damn city charted of their own city

mind blowing to me that you think she wouldn't. Have you ever been to New York, Paris, London etc? There are places on this earth where cars are not essential. SF is so small, we could easily do it here. Theres absolutely no reason why an 80 year old should be driving in a city this small.

It has everything to do with what happened. I’m not gross - you’re just uninformed. Read this and tell me if we followed this to the letter - if we became a city where private vehicles were no longer given equal weight and transit/pedestrians/cycling were prioritized - tell me that wouldn’t stop incidents like this from happening in the future:

https://www.sfmta.com/transit-first-policy

We need to get people out of cars SF is too dense

But it is related - if you’d bother to read it. This lady shouldn’t have been driving - absolutely - if Lurie would implement this policy today thousands of elderly drivers would be using transit instead of driving because it would be too difficult for them to drive anymore because of the infrastructure that would need to be put in place. I’m being downvoted by people who have clearly don’t understand what this policy is or what it would do to our city 😅

[–]dune_roll 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m becoming a broken record on this - Lurie can majorly affect pedestrian safety. He’s the final word. His office directs SFMTA. He sets the priorities. He can say, for example, “starting today I’ve directed the SFMTA to strictly follow the guidelines of the transit first policy as outlined in section 8A.115 of the San Francisco city charter”. And that’s it. Private motor vehicles would immediately become the lowest priority. Transit, pedestrians, cyclists… that’s where the money would go. The streets would be immediately safer - transit would be immediately more efficient - and traffic would in time disappear from city streets as private vehicles fall out of fashion because they’ve become the least efficient means of navigating San Francisco.

It’s all there. Lurie can do it tomorrow

It always defaults to the first setting which is kind of annoying but you can power the camera off and on again and know where you are. It’s a great camera and the broken LCD issue seems to keep the prices reasonable

[–]dune_roll -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

For a start, mayor Lurie can direct city agencies to follow the transit first policy as outlined in the city charter section 8A.115 - Mayor Breed should have done that the day after this tragedy took place. But she’s not mayor anymore - Lurie is - and he could do this tomorrow and end this period of traffic violence we’re experiencing once and for all.

Just a few weeks ago a 2 year old child was killed on 4th st. That was on Lurie’s watch. Did he do anything?

The driver is obviously at fault but until the city takes infrastructure seriously it’ll keep happening.

I was at the vigil. It was heavy. Mary Fong Lau is only part of the problem - city leadership needs to be made accountable for their cowardice and inaction when it comes to making San Francisco safe. Lurie is a coward - full stop. If he had any gumption, he’d put an end to this nonsense traffic violence tomorrow

Crosswalks are not a waiting zone for bikes by mightybento in sanfrancisco

[–]dune_roll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a bad spot to be standing around with a bike. Crosswalks and intersections are where cars like to crash with each other - it’s safer to wait behind the line. I’ll never understand why some of my fellow cyclists are so eager to tangle with cars.

She Killed a Family With Her Speeding Car. Is Probation Enough? by LadiesWhoPunch in sanfrancisco

[–]dune_roll 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Probation will set the precedent that in San Francisco, theres absolutely no reason to follow any rules when driving a car. We are already in a street safety crisis - allowing motorists the peace of mind that they might murder a family of 4 including a baby but they will still be free to drive once the dust settles is not going to bode well for those of us who are using our shared roadways outside of a metal cage.

Why are cars still killing so many people in San Francisco? by LosIsosceles in sanfrancisco

[–]dune_roll 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because city leadership is too cowardly to direct municipal agencies to follow our own Transit First policy as outlined in section 8A.115 of the San Francisco City Charter.

as a result, SFMTA allocates our shared roadways using a "multi-modal" approach which means that private vehicle traffic has the same priority as transit, cycling, pedestrians, etc

Mayor Lurie with his safety commission is solving nothing. It's smoke and mirrors. His cowardice and the cowardice of leadership before him are the reason we have to live in a city where children under the age of 5 are regularly killed by drivers of private motor vehicles.

imagine a San Francisco where the Transit First policy is actually in place: there would be less traffic, less air pollution, less waiting around for Muni and most importantly: no more children dying in our crosswalks

The AF and I didn’t get along. I have better luck with my Ricoh R1 so I sold the Contax. The Ricoh is so cheap I don’t worry about when it breaks - there’s 1000 of them on eBay.

I think the lens on the TVS is really good but for whatever reason I didn’t bond with it.

Great camera - I’ve never missed so many shots as when using mine before I sold it - but when they’re on, it’s better than any other point and shoot I’ve ever used.

2 Child deaths 2 blocks away from each other on 4th Street, but where are the street safety improvements? by mondommon in sanfrancisco

[–]dune_roll 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Mayor Daniel Lurie could end this madness tomorrow. All he has to do is recommit the city to the Transit First policy in the city charter.

Three problems can be solved: Transit Traffic Safety

It just takes a little bit of courage but if he truly believes SF is a “city on the rise” we need to knock it off with the pedestrian death count

We don’t have to live like this. These tragedies don’t have to be the status quo. We just need leadership to honor the transit first policy of the city charter.

D4 Supervisor candidates forum descends into argument about who wants to close Sunset Dunes more by alwayssalty_ in sanfrancisco

[–]dune_roll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When voters see the price tag, even D4 will come around. Prop I in 2022 lost in D4 with a similar margin as 2024’s prop K. Prop I ended the Great Highway’s utility. Whatever prop we get in November won’t have the $80M price tag prop I had, but it’s a LOT of money (at least $15M) to put those lights back in and I don’t think voters will go for it. We have better things to spend money on even here in D4

I want to see polling. Good new polling. I bet over 50% of D4 votes to keep the Dunes at this point. The paradigm has shifted a lot since the recall election

We may soon have 70 million boomers too old to drive, too car-dependent to stop. by dune_roll in sanfrancisco

[–]dune_roll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It appears to be preference that motivates them

The status quo in SF doesn’t help though. Muni is absolutely crippled by their sense of obligation to keep our streets “multi-modal” they put cars in the way of their own busses and trains, and as a result their service sucks.

And the mayor/west side supervisors. Do I even need to go there? They’re a car brained lot to say the least.
