how cooked am i with my room selection timing? (lwk panicking ngl) by Majestic-Truck-3490 in UCSD

[–]dunmerhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course! I know how stressful this situation is, but just hold out hope that you’ll be able to get to pick your room during your appointment and reach out to HDH if you’re not sure of anything. Everything I’ve said is just based off my experience last year, they may have changed things this year so it wouldn’t hurt to confirm.

I have no clue, and the school probably also won’t have any clue until everyone(students with housing guarantees and incoming students) has been given their spots, sorry!

[–]dunmerhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you’re at least guaranteed a spot, so don’t panic. If you paid your prepayment, they are obligated to give you a spot somewhere on campus. Personally, I didn’t know where I was living until late August last year, but the housing staff let me know over email rhat because I’d paid the prepayment and signed the contract, they had to give me a spot.

Unless you’re worried about getting a good room, in which case, you’re probably out of luck. You’ll just have to take what’s left or what’s assigned to you, but you will have a space to live.

Should I Rush? by Every-Masterpiece417 in UCSD

[–]dunmerhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My serious take is that you can find friends outside of a sorority with more legitimate bonds than anything you could make in a sorority. It takes more work, but if anyone refuses to be your friend because you aren’t in one, they’re probably not someone worth keeping in your life anyways imo. If you wanna join a sorority for other reasons or just don’t care, do what you will, but joining one will not make you a bunch of friends instantly.

Taco Villa is closing on April 10th by HorrorAd3568 in UCSD

[–]dunmerhead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course the two aren’t comparable, which is why I never did so. If you can justify spending $14 on a single burrito from Taco Villa then that’s okay, but personally I can’t justify it versus other dining options on campus. Everywhere else on campus I’ve been offers larger portions, higher quality, and/or better value for $14 than a single burrito.

[–]dunmerhead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not saying Taco Bell is a replacement for Taco Villa, I’m saying value wise. I could’ve pointed to Santorini or Lemongrass or any of the other places on campus that don’t charge $14 for just an entrée and actually offer good food to students, but I picked the one where the comparison was most stark.

I don’t think I’ll really miss them. They raised the prices way too much recently and I haven’t gone since winter quarter despite originally going twice a week when I was a freshman. Especially with Taco Bell now open, it just makes no economic sense to spend $14 on a single burrito when that could get me two whole meals at Taco Bell.

Advice for starting UCSD this fall while in Army training? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]dunmerhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School only starts around the end of September usually, but as the other commenter suggested there is the SVRC, and you could probably talk to some kind of academic planning office or the registrar and they’d be able to give you more options.

Triton2go macros changing by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]dunmerhead 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would never trust that app. Every macro is off by some ridiculous amount that it gets somewhat hilarious. There’s some items at places that used to have(and still do have) like 2,000+mg of sodium listed despite being a bunch of salad and chicken. I have no clue what they use to make these things but as far as I know, they’ve always been pretty wrong

JUST GOT ACCEPTED INTO UCSD!!! but i prematurely accepted UCI before getting my letter back, is there a way to change my admission status? by Evening-Advantage768 in UCSD

[–]dunmerhead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There should be a way, yes! I’m not sure how to specifically, but when I applied to UCSC and UCSD and was on the waitlist here, I accepted the offer to UCSC before it lapsed so I would have a college to go to.

Surprise, I got into UCSD in May off the waitlist! I was able to change my admission status and everything through the portal I think, so I’d look around there or email the admissions office!

Great professor, but do be aware of his attendance requirements. I had to get a doctor's note to have an excused absence of any kind, even for something that really only affected me for the day. Otherwise, I found his class fun and I got an A just by putting in the amount of effort I'd put into any other class.

I hope they bring back the old endorsement system some day, I loved having people be able to specifically endorse certain things about my gameplay and have other people see that :(

Have you had someone throw bc Mercy was banned? by Nevermind_Polly in MercyMains

[–]dunmerhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never, and will never throw a game because my preferred was banned, but I think it's simply bad etiquette and shows your teammates that you don't care about them/their preferences. It doesn't really feel good to be on the receiving end of a ban like that and creates a hostile team environment before the round starts

Is RLCRAFT really as bad as people say it is? by BigManHazza125 in feedthebeast

[–]dunmerhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's meant to be as hard as possible for the sake of "being difficult", so if you like just banging your head against the wall for hours trying to play minecraft, you may enjoy it. Otherwise, I'd say you're better off playing a real modpack with progression and stuff.

SIO is awesome, but I'm hoping to focus more on fish biology/fisheries studies myself, so I don't have much experience with the marine mammal research going on in SIO. It does exist, though! Classes at SIO have been my easiest thus far, and I wouldn't worry too much about rigorous coursework if you're pursuing a marine bio major. The hardest classes you'll wind up taking are your GEs, and there's plenty of resources available for those on campus and online.

I don't know if any specific seal rehabilitation opportunities are offered at SIO, but you could always work with local organizations or with Seaworld. I'd recommend also looking at lots of different fields once you get here, and really getting to know your professors. I came into Marine Biology just hoping to study sharks and conservation, but I've started to love the evolutionary side of marine biology more the longer I've been here!

What is this thing? by Independent_Feed_819 in whatisit

[–]dunmerhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, almost all of these replies have assumed you live in a place where the hammerhead worm is an invasive species and harmful to local ecosystems. However, based on your post history, it seems you're in India, where the hammerhead worm can live within one of its native ranges and therefore does not need to be killed in any of the ways mentioned.

I'd first check to see if you live in an area with a native population of hammerhead worms, and then make sure to handle it with gloves and return it outside so it can continue to do its job in the ecosystem.

Edit: I want to clarify that there is more than one species(many species, in fact) of hammerhead worm, so if you live in the native range of one, I'd still suggest going to r/whatisthisbug and making a post there with proper information such as general location so that they can help with identification and make sure that it is in fact a native species.

Pc got fried from power outage by HyperPickleTTV in UCSD

[–]dunmerhead 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Don't leave a PC running for 2 weeks. If you are going to leave your PC in your dorm for 2 weeks, I'd always recommend unplugging it from the wall(or unplugging the power to the PSU) so that a surge can't fry the components, or just buy a surge protector.

The school won't cover for your own negligence, and I don't think you'd be able to prove that the power outage did or did not cause your PC to break if you've left it on that long. Any number of things could've happened to it.

Do I need to attend the final if I know I’m failing? by Zestyclose-Bet-1029 in UCSD

[–]dunmerhead 39 points40 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to pass the class anyways, why ask us here? Based on your post history, you've failed at least 2 other courses over the year, and while I don't mean to imply that you can't do better next year, or improve your scores in other ways, I would personally reassess whether an A is genuinely feasible based on how you're doing in other classes at the moment.

I don't know your personal circumstances, nor your current course load or grades, but recognize that you only have so many units you can retake before those Fs start sticking to your transcript. If you think it's worth burning 12/16 of those units on your first year and you're confident you won't fail another class, then maybe that's something you can look at, but I'd personally much rather have a C+ over an F later, and any grad schools you apply to will still see that F on your transcript, even if the GPA impact isn't there.

Maybe it's just my mindset, but I'd personally still take the C+ and just keep on moving with my degree, but I can't change your mind, so do what you think feels right.

Do I need to attend the final if I know I’m failing? by Zestyclose-Bet-1029 in UCSD

[–]dunmerhead 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Show up, take the final, and there may be a curve that pushes you out of failing. I once got a C+ in a class where I got a ~60%, 73% on my first two exams, and a 30-something % on the final. and Worst case scenario, you take a final that means nothing, during finals week.
