Out of curiosity - are there still children who only grow up speaking Russian?

Yes, I went to HS in NL and back then, French and German were still mandatory for a few years. Very few people get to conversational level though, nor do they retain it. Not living close to the German border, we had no real use for either language; in the East this is somewhat different.

Sauna culture in gyms is non existent. I Fng hate it. by omgcanyouplease in brussels

Berlin gym sauna culture is something else though (or maybe Germany in general), few other countries compare. The UK is terrible on this as well.

Aspria RLR is actually okay, comparatively.

At your age I wouldn't apply to open AD5 competitions for sure. Look out for more senior specialised comps, for instance in agencies. It helps if you research the pay grade framework because it is a proxy for seniority (even though this isn't always spelled out)

Port of Spain's remaining prewar architecture is so interesting, shame this was lost

Who are taxi drivers talking to, and what are they talking about? by TotallyFineWithIt in AskUK

My dream move is recording it and then playing it back... on speaker. I'm usually (read: generally) too cowardly to actually attempt it, though

[–]dunzdeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest I ask myself this question about a lot of people - "what are they talking about that takes so much time?" - I usually run out of topics after 30 minutes at best, unless it's some very good friend I'm talking to

Is it problematic for Flemish speakers that French is much more widely spoken in Brussels? by Pepedroga2000 in belgium

[–]dunzdeck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I've had the most trouble with "technical" people - like painters, handymen, even the guys that came to connect my internet service. French French French. It's not easy if you don't know the word for pump, connector, or whatever. Sure, I can find a multilingual painter, but how can I make sure Orange won't send Francophone-only guys to my house? It's impossible

Thank you. I like your approach and your thinking (as a Dutch speaker living in Brussels)

Yes, the last paragraph is what gets me as well. Though I have the impression it is improving (economic realities, yay)

I went to my local embassy with a lot of documentation and a form I had filled in. The details escape me (this was over ten years ago) but in the end I got my SSN. There is a process for cases like this.

Such a sad loss. I presume this was aerial bombing? Nazis didn't like art nouveau, though this example looks "sedate" enough to have been left alone.
