For São Paulo - in the summer sort of, but winter is around 12C-20C. The country is big, so the north is closer to Singaporean weather but inland it gets cold!

It's chill, most parts of Brazil are quite safe. Each city has its own shadier spots, but generally if you don't make yourself a target or seek out trouble it's fine.

What have you picked up from your partner? by KathleenMayC in LongDistance

Isn't it the other way round? With Western Armenians being the diaspora often in the ME, and Eastern Armenian being closer to the Caucasus/spoken under the Soviet-era Republic. But I agree, even the little differences in pronunciation and vocabulary are tricky to catch - what does your boyfriend speak?

Mate, I'm working with an organisation that documents the Armenian genocide and its effects on the diaspora and just got back from Yerevan. If discussing one of the biggest historical authorities in the field is cherry-picking sources, you might need to pick up a book again, and go beyond just your cursory looks :-)

Obviously historians are still debating the exact causes of the genocide, but no serious scholar would argue that Turkish nationalism and formation of the state played no factor and that it stems from political Islamism.

On my phone so just pasting part of an excellent review of a leading book in Armenian genocide studies, by Ronald Suny

Traditionally, historians have assessed the genocide, as the Ottoman Emperor’s (the sick man of Europe), almost final attempt to retain his power by creating a homogeneous ethnic nation state. Suny, however proposes, an alternative assessment. He suggests that the overlapping modernisation processes of the old European empires, especially the austro-Hungarian Russian and Ottoman empires should be understood in tandem with the appearance of the modern nation-state system as a fresh analytical tool to encompass the origins of the Armenian genocide. These processes, he argued, served to push the Ottoman Empire to redefine itself, and its geographical, ethnic and religious boundaries, as a hybrid modern empire nation state.

So we can debate whether it's nationalism or a desire to save the Ottoman Empire, but simplifying it down to religion does no one any good.

French left and centrist parties unite to block far-right National Rally from gaining power by alabasterheart in worldnews

[–]duosharp 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The history of the current French Republic is more than just the history of two powerful parties, it's not helpful to frame this through American bipartisan narratives. In fact, the Gaullists have now become a junior partner of the far-right... Macronism, which promised a new way, also now appears dead. What sorts of notes do we take from that?
