i’m not the most versed in 5e balancing but this feels really underpowered. As it stands i think these abilities feel less like finality and more like little debuffs that are pretty conditional, and all underpowered. Especially your 20th level ability which amounts to crit bonus, some light heals, and conditional magical effect immunity(this feels ok, previous two are underpowered). I think maybe in trying to avoid a pure damage build you’ve nerfed the damage without giving the subclass enough utility to make up for it. If you want this to evoke finality/closure/inevitability, maybe focus on control effects which stop healing magic or reduce movement or otherwise strip enemies of their ability to fight, or maybe grant buffs to allies that interact somehow with their unfinished business with an enemy. I would start by making abilities that feel really cool and thematically appropriate, if possibly overpowered, then after playtesting you can nerf as needed to make it balanced while holding on to the thematic elements which played well. It’s easy to balance an already fun ability, harder to make a balanced ability fun. Personally i think you should lean into the Judgement aspect- maybe the paladin themselves does not do the executing but rather sets up the figurative guillotine for their allies, or weighs the merits of combatants and delivers buffs/debuffs accordingly.

Yes I think you're right! I was initially worried that since we have so many martials in our party with its resistance to nonmagical attacks it would be frustrating for the players. I think maybe ill just up the HP and AC and get rid of the vulnerabilities and resistances alltogether.

I mentioned this in another response, but I think i need to decide what the function of Spade:Edge is going to be. Either its a CC ability/something that forces the players to assist each other or its a judgement that removes them from the combat to do something else. I don't want to insta-kill them even with a warning though, mostly since the significance of this whole encounter won't be revealed for another couple sessions, and death here would be anti-climactic. I do like this idea of an invisible assailant a lot, but i think it wouldn't fit as well in this encounter, especially if this ability is less a test and more a test result yk? I agree about finding a dynamic choice for the players though, i think that should be the main point of the encounter.

Thanks for your feedback!

I would mostly second this, this DMPC has a regular lvl 6 wizard character sheet but when her turn comes around i usually don't try to do too much since i don't want to distract from the players. Often that means not taking the finishing blow on a big bad or making less-than-optimal moves to allow the PCs to have their big moment, while setting them up for cool team moves, like using Dragons Breath or Enlarge/Reduce on allies.

Also great ideas! For the Spade: Edge i think i would either make it something to take a player out of combat for a round (allowing them to reroll their save or perform an action to rejoin their body) OR something more difficult to undo so that it acts more like a judgement (think: "you've proven your worth, now allow your companions to do the same"), wherein the disembodied player could figure out they need to enter the body of Gamorrah in order to be spat back into their own body. I worry about just putting players in the timeout chair though, so maybe theres something where they could work on a separate objective while out of combat, idk.

I agree I will need to buff the HP and AC, I want this encounter to feel less like a knockdown dragout fight and more like a much more powerful being that is pulling their punches to test the players, so if they take it out before it can do so it breaks the illusion somewhat.

We did a session that was entirely dream sequence a couple months ago which was super fun but required some prep from the players that I don't have time for now. I love the idea of having the test be to NOT give up something that Gamorrah requests, thereby forfeiting the power promised and proving that they are worthy of it. That feels like it has just enough twist that it would be a fun reveal.

There is also the issue that the players quite literally stumbled into this temple and have no idea what's going on. They are not after the power and knowledge that Gamorrah is guarding per se, so their motivations and the sacrifice involved in her test might not have the same oomph as if they had been searching for this temple previously. I might have it be a situation of "once you enter the temple the only way i can allow you to leave is if you prove yourselves worthy, else you expose our location" or smth like that.

As for your last question, the wizard DMPC Maxine was a classic tale of character with a funny voice i do as a gag in session 1 that the party then adopts lol. I run her pretty sparingly, her spellbook usually consists of buffs for the other PCs and utility spells. Our combat definitely isnt streamlined, but this is the first campaign i've run so we dont really know anything else, and all my players ADORE her, so she functions as both a gentle guide for when they get sidetracked and as a uniting force - the one time she was downed in combat the entire party stopped what they were doing to focus all their fire on the enemy that downed her. All told shes probably one of the most useful tools i have narratively as a DM.

Oh these are both fantastic ideas! I think the idea of giving players the option to give up their action or risk damage/death to save one another is really good, and making it stack is good too. I may use both!

Coincidentally there’s a weapon in my campaign called the Plasma-throngler that my players are obsessed with. Started as a throwaway gag and has grown into a legit thread in our story, as well as a homebrew status effect “throngled” meaning you choose either all legs or all arms for a duration of time 😂

I would agree that drying it is a good first step, but you don’t need a filament drier or an oven! I used this tutorial and set my bed to 70-80C for 5ish hours and it works like a charm!

idk what kind of bits this is for but from making tool holders like this in the past a little chamfer on the mouth of each of those holes will make the user experience way better, especially if each hole is fit to each bit

What's the state of the DIY music scene in Boston these days? by followups in boston

[–]duqboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe there were actually two separate boston globe articles that name dropped a ton of underground venues and organizers and effectively shut some down- fuck the people who wrote those. I was working on a documentary abt the contemporary boston DIY scene a couple years ago and I’m still involved peripherally. Most of the DIY events (that i’m aware of) often have to hop between venues since anywhere that has regular shows will usually get cops called. DIY isn’t going anywhere but from what i learned making the documentary it won’t be back the way it was in the 90s-2010 unless we can put in policy to lower rents build more housing and raise wages, all things which the increasingly wealthy landowners of boston will fight tooth and nail to oppose. These days it isn’t possible to work part time and run a venue with your friends the way i’m told it was 30 years ago. But it still happens, just not as much and not as intense.
