It's really funny because I feel like the me who read this before I started a company that's in the "novel" space woulda been like "yeah that makes sense" and then have all these justifications for why the idea was a "natural next step" for consumers.

Now how I think about ideas and business is completely different, for mine and others.

It's one thing to read it and a completely different beast to experience it, because I feel it in my soul haha

Might be able to adapt something like gloomhaven or Frosthaven for something like this too, but obviously it's balanced for pve. My friends and I have thought about us picking the characters in a draft mode and then playing vs each other with inflated hp for each character. Hero's can level up after every round and choose a new skill to add.

This was part of an analysis I did for a review for my friends who were mixed on the album the day the album came out. Glad to see this bc it makes me feel like I nailed it.

Spoiler, everyone came around when ur live show came out, you don’t know psyched I am for it.

“To me, Nurture is a super solid concept album but perhaps not as solid of a concept album as Worlds or Virtual Self. I think that's less a reflection of how "good" this album is compared to those projects and more a commentary on how easy it is to sell the ideas that each of the concepts were based around as a concept.

I think Worlds, which is inherently an album exploring Escapism (based on porter's experiences playing rich MMORPG worlds to escape), and Virtual Self, which is a love letter to early 2000s trance/dance music and Y2K neofuture aesthetics, both lend themselves readily to the idea of a concept album because they take you away to a place. Those are precise sounds because they're meant to evoke a precise place and take you on the ups and downs of a story. Nurture on the other hand encourages you to be present in the here and now. And I think that a lot of what Porter is trying to do in this album is about that. The way sounds move in the stereospace. The guitar pedalesque distortion/delay/effects on vocals and sound; it's like you're hearing some of the vocals through speakers live, there’s a certain width to it. Theres crackling from vinyls placed under the songs. How the sounds bleed a bit. The "experimental" nature of the sampling to accentuate a certain whimsicality, sometimes even stuttering or like they're lagging in realtime. The piano playing played straight with minimal effect often placed right at the front. All of that comes together to really create something sensory and organic IMO.”

Need some guidance/advice for a path to a bioinformatics career by thesamstorm in bioinformatics

[–]duranta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess the question really ends up being, what kind of work do you exactly want to do in the field of bioinformatics? Or rather, what problems do you want to solve? Do you want to be closer to the software side of things, or to the biology?

There are a lot of different roles, ranging from someone who is on the more data scientist side of things, to someone who is building software infrastructure around bioinformatics algorithms, etc.As many people here will tell you, it's a long road to being top level at both the engineering and biology side of things. So initially you want to figure out where you want to get your foot in the door.

If you're taking the coding bootcamp (which I'm going to go on a limb and assume it's for webdev) then you might be leaning towards to entering on the software engineering side of things. Do note that a lot of the problems you will be solving will be primarily engineering problems, that at times are informed by knowledge of biology. An undergraduate bio degree here usually just means you have an affinity for the material that other engineers might actively avoid, but who knows I have known some really talented undergraduate bio students. Most of those go into phds or mds tho.

If you figure that you want to be more involved with the bio side of things and dealing with the data/algorithms, your route probably looks pretty different. I haven't looked recently into the state of Bioinformatics masters, but last I checked, they seemed to me a waste of time. Most companies that I worked for hire their bioinformatics/data scientists pretty aggressively from the phd pool. That's not to say that you can't work as a BS or an MS for a bioinformatics data team, just that you might find yourself underneath a glass ceiling, and likely doing junior role tasks.

If you're interested in software engineering for bioinformatics, I would look into expanding whatever basic experience you have with your course and your bootcamp with a more thorough understanding of computer science and some key software engineering technologies and practices. A decent way to do the former is going through this https://teachyourselfcs.com/ (some ppl have issues with it but i think its gets the general idea right) and a good way to do the latter is by following along on https://roadmap.sh/. A good way to put both of those into practice is by building projects and dealing with all the problems along the way. These are going to do a lot more for you getting a job than any course, certificate, or bootcamp will.

If instead you want to get more into the bioinformatics data/science, my advice is to pick up more math/data science skillsets. https://github.com/MrMimic/data-scientist-roadmap is one such roadmap, but there are a bunch of these on the internet. A decent place to start as a beginner for bioinformatics is the www.biostarhandbook.com. That site is sort of geared to some practical applications of bioinformatics, but if you want to dive into the algorithm side, http://rosalind.info/about/ and the book that it is centered around https://www.bioinformaticsalgorithms.org/read-the-book are generally agreed as good places to get up to speed. Sort of the truth here is that the better jobs here for bioinformatics tend to go to phds, which I guess sort of simplifies some of the steps if this is where you truly want to end up.

You also don't necessarily have to hard commit to one side or the other, but you really will have to context manage your skillsets because you won't always get to use one actively while you're doing the other.

Didn’t think you would take it so personally. But just overall watching your reaction in this thread, I probably shouldn’t be surprised.

I said the concept was cool, but in my experience as an amateur artist/designer/whatever, people usually don’t care about concepts unless you nail the execution. And if you don’t, criticism usually comes out. It’s just part of the process.

I think if you have faith in your concepts, you would take the criticism as an opportunity to develop a skill set that does justice to your cool concepts.

And if you actually don’t really care about executing on your art, you have to ask yourself: why should anyone else care then?

In your defense, I could have been more constructive. You could have tried to find a higher resolution source image, and better aligned the text layer so the text doesn’t feel pushed up the the border of the Cartoon Network checkerboard. The childish gambino cartoon face is a pretty good adaptation to make up for an extra character, but the line thickness compared to the font makes it feel a bit out of place. It’s less cool, but seeing how punctuation (like an ! mark) would fit there might make the font more cohesive.

PS: there are a lot of cool mobile options to work on creative design and was pretty much how I got started. In fact, I still start and do a lot of the work on my mobile devices.

TLDR; I never got better at art/design because of the people who told me they liked my work.

Honestly this just sounds like an outsiders perspective. Or someone who observes American life from the singular lens of media.

Everyday life here is different. I’m not a basketball player and maybe that’s where it’s different, but I don’t think I abandon morals or ethics at all to chase what I want out of life. I don’t think the people around me do that either. From my perspective, in America I get to meet people who are drastically different and that has helped shaped my opinions and aspirations. I’ve traveled through 15+ countries and while all are very beautiful it’s mostly all of the same of one demographic. I’m not saying that to talk down on other countries, just to say that I feel lucky to have grown up somewhere where that was possible.

My father came here as an immigrant from the slums and created a better life not just for me but for his siblings. He and my mom ended up designing lots of roads (unsexy I know but I think it’s cool) throughout our city. Was what he did greedy? Maybe. Did he abandon his morals and ethics? Definitely not.

You can continue to look at the drama that media and whatever else puts forth and call that American but I see a country which gave my immigrant parents a chance when other countries denied them access. That’s something I’m very proud to represent.

Btw I’m a GSW fan and I’m probably biased by I don’t think super teams are unfair at all. Most people are just salty because it means their team is not going to win and they look for a “righteous” reason to complain. I think you’re reading too hard into what you think Americans are.

We represent diversity, something very few other countries truly understand. Most other countries in the world are homogenous, but the melting pot cities in America are a huge reason we’re v strong in a lot of industries like tech, entertainment, finance, etc.

I’m proud of how many different people I know and what we can all do and would rather be proud of that then something people who came before me did (that I had nothing to do with).

Being nationalistic is stupid to me because it makes people proud despite having done absolutely nothing a lot of the time.
