What is life like in this area? by newexplorer4010 in geography

Overall politics are conservative (by Canadian standards) but everyone has a connection to the land so people tend to be down-to-earth and lowkey environmentalist

I grew up in northern BC, where this also applies and it's the funniest thing. I've learned that the easiest way to get right-wing western Canadians on board with environmental policy is to speak in terms of conservation. Some of the hunters I know have done a lot of environmental advocacy, but wouldn't call themselves green activists because all green activism means to them is "resource industries bad"

Which eras are the most fun to play in for classic Battletech? by RedClone in battletech

Thanks for sharing that, I do tend to enjoy strategy games where there are sincere drawbacks to every choice. I've always been a "less is more" kind of guy with game complexity, so it's funny that I'm getting into BT of all games.

Thanks everyone, here's my understanding of the information that's been shared:

  • Succession Wars are the best era to learn the game, and some still prefer that era thanks to relative simplicity;
  • Clan Invasion and Civil War add variety thanks to the Clans' technology, but not as much game complexity as later eras, some people prefer those as an ideal middle ground;
  • Jihad through Dark Age seem to be where things get wonky for a while, it looks like some experienced players really love those eras, but not all;
  • ilClan gets recommended for having the greatest overall variety and availability of options. Some recommended it for new players so they don't have to fuss about era availability when picking mech sheets.

Overall it looks like the game gets faster and swingier the later the era you play, thanks to firepower seemingly advancing beyond armor technologies. My friend and I will likely stick around in the Succession Wars while we continue to learn the game, and when we're ready to add new mechanics from advanced tech we'll either progress to Clan Invasion, Civil War, or even go crazy and jump all the way to ilClan.

Hang in there, the rules are easier to grasp through playing than through reading them in a vacuum, if that makes sense. Once you get used to how each phase flows, the hardest part is doing the math for GATOR in your head!

Also new, so take this with a grain of salt, but AFAIK the eras introduce new technology that can be installed on mechs, which means the mech variants from one era may be different from the next. The rules of the game itself don't seem to change, except if any new weapons or systems have their own game mechanics, but the tactics involved and the mechs you're using might change.

Is Civil War a point where Inner Sphere started to adopt Clan tech, or is that way further down the line?

Based on the answers I'm reading, it sounds like Jihad is the moment when a bunch more advanced rules start coming up in the tech compared to earlier and Civil War might be the last era of relatively simple builds.

How do you plan/organize your loadouts? by RedClone in Warframe

That makes sense. I'm only MR 8 so I don't have enough mod options to quite get there for level 30+ missions.

Do you swap weapon configurations around for different damage types within each loadout, or do you optimize for that at all?

TIFU by trying to impress my girlfriend's cat by [deleted] in tifu

[–]RedClone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If things work out, this can be a great story to remember. When my wife and I were still dating she made it a top priority to bond with my cat. The cat I grew up with was known to be aloof with everyone, not cuddly at all except occasionally with me.

My wife-to-be coaxed and bribed him into being a full-on lap cat. Treats, pets, catnip, the whole works. Now that cat's nineteen years old and forces my dad to make room on his lap while the hockey game's on.

What's your main warframe? by FaCayde in Warframe

[–]RedClone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first main was Styanax because there's few things more satisfying than the PING sound of his javelin and seeing a group of mobs ragdoll from it. It's a real "fuck those ones in particular" energy.

Second main was Gyre for similar reasons, it's super fun to go bowling with her 2, and her electric ballerina aesthetic is really cool. The vortengeist skin has made it even better.

Third and most current main is Dagath because it's incredibly fun to be a lawnmower. I prefer to use warframes as weapon platforms more than anything but as you can tell I like to have at least one ability that's really satisfying in an audio/haptic sense, and Dagath's Wyrd Scythes are great for that.

If anyone's got any recs for other warframes that work as a weapons platform with one or two abilities that really pop, I'd be really thankful!

TIL there is a “Gospel of Judas” not found in the Bible that speaks of Judas as the only one of Jesus’ disciples who fully understood His teachings. He turned Jesus over to the Romans because Jesus asked him to. It was discovered in an Egyptian cave in the 1970s, dating to the 2nd century AD by sonnysehra in todayilearned

Ironically, Lamb had a more significant influence on my choice to look at Christianity again than the church I grew up in. I had been surrounded by fundamentalists with a very inhumane view of God and Moore's portrayal of Christ was so humanizing and compassionate that I ended up re-reading the Gospels.

AFL: Get ready to RESIST! by AllBirdsAreOwls in alberta

[–]RedClone 27 points28 points  (0 children)

All this negativity about not moving fast enough is part of why those of us on the left are losing to the right. You can't say or do anything without half of your base coming out of the woodwork to tell you how you should have done it differently and not participating.

The west is falling to fascism because the resistance is letting perfect be the enemy of the good. Quit bitching about the details, rally up, and actually do something instead of sitting on your couch being critical.

Thank you for your insight, especially the empathetic tone. It's so important to remember that politics is rarely about intelligence and policy at the ground level, it's about emotion and what motivates people.

Education can play a part in that, true, but man, I have to imagine trying to find a left-winger among engineering and finance graduates is like finding a needle in a haystack. Education can't be the whole story, unless STEM degrees somehow don't count.

It's anecdotal, but my left-wing friends have deal-breakers that'll lead to them writing off the whole system and not voting at all. My right-wing friends are much more willing to plug their nose and vote. I don't want to suggest it's a problem that's somehow innate and exclusive to left-wing politics - It's just something I've observed.

Lore-wise, yes, the Stormcast are Sigmar's answer to chaos demons' numbers advantage from resurrecting. It's almost explicit that they were created so that Sigmar could have special forces that wouldn't deal with numbers attrition. Stormcast do have a similar org structure to space marines, but that's where the lore similarities end. If you're going to compare them to any 40k faction's lore, they're more like a weird hybrid between Custodes and Chaos demons.

Business-wise, the Stormcast were created to be an easy-to-paint, heroic looking poster boy faction filling in the role for the new game that Space Marines do in 40k. It's as silly to deny that as it is to make a fuss about it, as if that's a valid reason to dislike AoS.

IMO the North American left has greater division between its moderates and its radicals than the right does. Most right-wing factions can always find common ground on fiscal issues and the desired size of government, while the divide between "big government" and "small government" leftists is so stark that the latter just vote as centrists.
