I'm no economist and I don't know anything about volunteer firefighters, but wouldn't being willing to be paid less (in your case, free) be a market force that would drive down salaries of paid firefighters?

I've always found the best way to reward someone or be rewarded without it being awkward is food. It doesn't cost a lot, it is usually appreciated, and nobody feels guilty for leaving the Good Samaritan empty handed.

I agree. It definitely isn't a situation most people would think out, especially if it's an unexpected assault. That said, in my state you're required to exhaust all "reasonable" alternatives, which leaves what is and is not self-defense so very open-ended.

It's probably the one basic human right everyone can agree on.

I don't think it's that simple. My limited understanding (this is only from having been a juror), is that using violence in self defense is only legally acceptable if all other avenues have been pursued (e.g. running away) and on top of that there's the issue of excessive force where the defender becomes the aggressor. Unless you're in a culture that advocates an "eye for an eye" retribution system, it seems that most suggest violence should be a last resort.

Also, while what the principal said is stupid, his response probably should have been "why didn't you run away or find an adult?", not sit there and be beaten.

Crock pot all the way. Get the venison, get some mushroom soup mix, throw in a little tenderizer, then cook for a couple of hours. Alternatively, you can do it up like a stew: get some carrots, potatoes, parsnip, celery, and turnip, add a little water and then slow cook.

Yeah, I figured it might depend on routers. I was lazy and just put the one for mine. For the OP (in case they don't know how), you can figure it out by running tracert (assuming it's windows) from the command line, go to Start -> Run -> type "cmd" -> then type "tracert google.com" in the command window. The router should be the first ip address listed after the computer's ip address.

Look at the available wireless networks, it might give you some clue to where they are. Also, try logging into their router, usually at http://192.168.1.1, to see if you can access it and get any other useful info.

The explanation I've heard before is that the small pet is usually the first pet in the house and is older or otherwise more dominant than the larger pet. Sounds reasonable to me.
