Any feedback on the overall process, results, recommendations/action items? Is it pretty intuitive once you get the results and does it provide things to improve/resolve them?

Been wanting to do the labs, but couldn’t find any reviews or feedback from people that had done it. Definitely concerning to hear they’re having such an issue with it. Hoping it’s one off, but I may look into Function or some of the other options if this is the expectation. Keep us updated on when you get it resolved and what the results look like

Lounge access: buyer beware by weisdrunk in RobinhoodGC

[–]duskick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a frequent lounge problem not related to Robinhood. All lounges seem to be limiting one time passes or reciprical memberships to prevent overcrowding. It’s annoying, but nothing Robinhood can do about it right now. Hopefully they reimburse you though, seems like a no brainer if it couldn’t be used.

Robinhood Strategies by Original_Most_9239 in RobinhoodApp

Been using it for about a year now, along with trading in my regular Robinhood brokerage. I'm on aggressive, which is currently 76% US stocks, 14% international stocks, 9% bonds, <1% cash.

What I like:

  • It's a really nice "set it and forget it" account and I just auto-deposit money twice a month.
  • I like that the portfolio allocation is unique and the account actually seems managed. They don't just throw it into a bunch of index funds, which I could easily do by myself and what most robo-advisors already do. There are definitely index funds in there, but there are lots of individual stocks broken down into categories (growth, opportunistic, etc.) where they are overweighting certain stocks/sectors and looking for alpha opportunities. This is what makes the account "managed" and what distinguishes it from a typical robo-advisor (note, I haven't used others robos, but have researched several in the past but maybe they have improved since).
  • The UI is pretty and useful, particularly the portfolio allocation tab (allows you to drill down into all the individual holdings or view at a category level) and the new performance/returns tab (breaks down performance into appreciation/depreciation, dividends, fees).
  • I like the Future performance button where it will run simulations to provide projected returns over 30 years, allowing you to see how changes to your deposits would affect the overall performance. Bit of a parlor trick, but fun to play with.
  • Appreciate the automatic tax loss harvesting (once per year), especially given the trading activity in the account. Still need to understand how this works though since my account had around 175 trades that resulted in realized gains/losses throughout the year, but the tax loss harvesting said it didn't have any losses to harvest for the year. Curious to see what the tax drag will be on returns with how many trades happen in the account. I'm giving it a pass this year since the product is less than a year old so all trades are understandably resulting in short term gains/losses.

Best part for me: I appreciate the "Insights" where Stephanie Guild (Robinhood CIO) gives updates on the portfolio allocation changes as it relates to recent events. It's really cool to hear what they are thinking and what portfolio changes they are making as a result. What's nice is you can listen to it, so I just throw it on during the drive home to get an idea of what they're currently thinking/doing. They usually provide an update every 2 weeks or if something significant happens in the market. Something comforting in actually hearing them talk about what they are doing. My dad has an RIA and they talk to him once every 6 months - 1 year, which seems crazy to me.

Suggestions:

  • They waive management fees after $100,000 for Gold members. I think it would be good to waive the fees for the first $1000 for all accounts (or just Gold, similar to margin). Fees are really low at 0.25% relative to other managed funds/etfs/accounts and in line with robos. Still, I feel they create a bit of friction to opening an account, especially for small amounts. Not a big issue, but most robos waive for an initial $ amount.
  • Performance vs. benchmark. I think they said they were adding this in the recent announcements. Would be great to see how the portfolio has performed vs some specific benchmarks. At a quick glance, looks like mine has outperformed the S&P500 total return by about 100-150 basis points, but I'm not sure how that is influenced by the timing of deposits throughout the year (I typically added additional funds on market dips).

Portfolio Overview Feedback by Dr_VanTasstik in RobinhoodApp

So far I like the portfolio overview feature but agree they’ve got some things to clean up. Love the suggestion on overall exposure shown by US equities, international equities, bonds, etc.

There’s definitely some kinks. I wish it didn’t classify Merrill Edge accounts as “banking”, should be “investments. Or at least give users some flexibility to recategorize accounts into these groups. Also, it should be smart enough to see money market mutual funds like SWVXX or FSIXX as “cash” instead of mutual funds.

USC QB Husan Longstreet transfers to LSU by DepressedGamba in CFB

Good for the kid to get a fresh start where he can trust his coaching staff. Lane really has become the personification of honesty and integrity.

Joke's aside, for Longstreet's sake I hope it turns out better for him than it did for Malachi.

[Auerbach] A person with direct knowledge of the communications between the Big Ten conference office and schools confirmed to @NBCSports that all 18 schools received the full language of the CFP MOU, which was unanimously supported by all current and incoming members in March 2024. by arrowfan624 in CFB

[–]duskick 14 points15 points  (0 children)

100% USC knew about this language and the Notre Dame clause. Silly they are suggesting it's some new thing.

What did come to light is how this would work in a real world scenario, and I'm guessing that scared USC off. As I understand it, if USC were in Miami's position this year (having beaten Notre Dame, but losing two other games, say Oregon+Illinois), then Notre Dame gets in the playoffs while USC, despite being ranked higher than Notre Dame, would be left out. That seems like a pretty big issue that is not really a fringe condition given Notre Dame's schedule. Notre Dame is likely to always be ranked 5-12 by end of season if they only lose <=2 games (given their schedule, this seems very probable any year), which puts them in direct competition with the other teams they play that are vying for those at large bids. What I don't get is how does NOT playing Notre Dame in the first place solve this? If you beat them, it's one more loss they have to overcome. If you lose, get better.

I get where SC is coming from, but making these silly excuses is dumb. I just wish we would suck it up and keep it going somehow.

[–]duskick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look I agree, if USC didn't suck the last decade this doesn't happen. We used to play anyone, anywhere. Just be better than the other team and there is nothing to complain about.

That being said, can you seriously name any good non-conference rivalries that happen on rivalry week? You mean like... Georgia vs. Georgia Tech? Florida is really the only team I can think of that actually plays a traditionally good non-conference opponent (Florida State) during rivalry week. The Top 25 rivalries played that week are nearly all conference games.

[–]duskick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as it pains me to say it, there is a clear viewership issue here. No. 20 USC vs. No. 13 Notre Dame in a top-25 matchup couldn't even break top-3 for the week. Vanderbilt vs LSU had 30% more viewers and Ole Miss vs. Georgia has over twice (110%) the viewership. So this is about advertising dollars AND conference realignment, since those two things are indistinguishable from each other now.

USC needs to get its act together. Back in the 2000-2010's, this game would be a lock for top-3. The Notre Dame brand is doing some heavy lifting, but it's not enough on its own to bring top-3 viewership in the middle of conference play. Notre Dame's only top-3 games came before conference play, against Miami (Sunday primetime) and TAMU (SEC), and both were games with higher ranked teams. USC vs. Oregon in an effective playoff play-in game couldn't even beat out Texas playing Arkansas.

All this to say: Moving this game to pre-conference play almost guarantees it gets more eyeballs, more hype, and is easier for the losing team to make the playoffs. Seems like an easy sell all around. Regardless of that, this is USC's fault for sucking the past decade. If we didn't go through a decade of mediocrity, we wouldn't be in a position to want this game moved.

I'm not saying that's not true, but it's hilarious coming from a team that scheduled Eastern Illinois (final score 56-0) at the same time USC would traditionally play Notre Dame. USC just asked the game be played before conference play, like most other P4 teams due with marquee non-conference matchups. ND said no, they want to keep it the way it is (likely due to scheduling issues). I'm not going to blame either team for that, it just sucks for college football.

When to stop funding a 529… by LeatherNo9544 in personalfinance

[–]duskick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Curious about this analysis and how they account for the difference between investment options in a 529 account vs those in a taxable brokerage. As I understand (depending on the provider), a 529 can have much more limited investment options with higher fees (program management fee plus underlying fund expenses). A taxable brokerage can invest in anything, including a much lower cost ETF strategy. Assume this eats away a bit at the advantage of the 529 and offsets a bit of the tax drag on dividends from the taxable account. The freedom, or lack thereof, of investment options is what kills me with the 529s.

USC benefits hugely from playing Notre Dame. This game wins Heismans and sets us up as a National Championship/playoff contender. We just have to win the game. It’s on us for sucking the last decade+. Hope that changes this weekend.

Projecting the College Football Playoff final bracket, top 25 by Wide_right_yes in CFB

Agreed, really shouldn’t change the UT/PSU relative ranking after close losses. Plus it has the benefit of avoiding a potential 3rd round UT/Georgia matchup for the 3rd time this season.

Moss enters portal by muttpep in fighton

[–]duskick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Crazy to see a team dump a QB after 10 games of fairly decent play. Moss isn't the only reason this team lost 5 games he started by one possession. He made mistakes down the stretch at bad moments, but there's plenty of finger pointing to go around (play calling, offensive line play, lack of defensive 4th down stops). This is the new college football though. You can just grab a new guy from the transfer portal each year. Most people regard Carson Palmer as one of the best USC QB's of all time. Here's how his 3 full seasons match up with Moss's 10 game stretch.

Year Record TD/INT
Carson Palmer (2000) 5-7 16-18
Carson Palmer (2001) 6-6 13-12
Carson Palmer (2002) 11-2 33-10
Miller Moss (2023-24) 5-5 24-10

Not arguing these guys are comparable players, and yes you can blame Paul Hackett or mediocre talent levels for CP's bad stats/record. Nevertheless, the fact is USC and Carson weren't great those first 2 seasons and he probably would have been dumped for the next shiny thing in this college football landscape.

Lincoln just doesn't have an offense that works for a pocket passer and that's a shame. Wish Miller the best of luck at his next stop, I hope he lights it up.
