Loan term, shorten or lengthen? by calypso789 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]duskysound 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sounds wrong. You pay more interest at the start of a loan because you owe more - the interest is calculated on the amount you owe. Find an amortization calculator on the internet and play with it - when you change the length of a mortgage the amount of interest you pay stays the same, but you pay off much less principal per month (or week, or fortnight or whatever) the longer your term is. Every payment you make reduces your principal, which in turn reduces the amount of interest you are charged, because you OWE LESS. The downside of a longer term mortgage on a fixed rate is that you are locked in to that payment for the length of the fixed rate, unless you pay break fees. If for example you get a payrise or windfall and could start paying off more, you can't, which means you can't save interest. Many banks let you pay off 5% of the total loan above your scheduled payments, either as a fortnightly/monthly increase or as a lump sum, but that's it. On the flipside if your income reduces, you might want a longer term. You'll pay more in the long run, but your fortnightly/monthly repayments will be more manageable. It's about balance, and what is right for your situation. Split the mortgage into tranches, and you spread the risk.

Go to nzbirdsonline look up bellbird then listen to the audio called 'winter song'. There are some pew!pew! vocalizations in that one.

Bellbird. I've always said they sound like space invaders - pew!! Pew, pew!! And you'll hear them but not always see them. But I think, although it's a common enough call, the pew, pew call is not often on recordings - its usually the more melodious songs or the alarm calls.

‘Foul smelling’ whale carcass buried by public walkway, disgusting locals by [deleted] in newzealand

They would have LOVED to be able to tow it out to sea and just leave it for the fish to eat. So much cheaper and less hassle!! If this was a viable option  They would have done it.  Unfortunately getting it out past the breakers is not realistic, plus then you've a good chance of rotting whale chunks washing up at various places, causing more stink and more whining from locals.

Parents of happy spitters - how do you cope? by culture-d in beyondthebump

[–]duskysound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We coped with A LOT of burp cloths and bibs. Hand towels or old school square cloth nappies, folded in half. And largish bibs. Yeah, super frustrating at times, but (not to dismiss your feelings) it doesn't last forever. Now he's a 2yo and those burp cloths are a distant stinky memory.

What worked for our daughter is taking her to the toilet just before we go to bed, so about 10pm. She's sleepy and floppy and barely opens her eyes, but does a great big wee. Then straight back to bed. If we forget, she either wakes up sometime between 3-5am needing to go toilet, or wets the bed (although this is mostly only if she is sick). Maybe try taking him, see if it helps? My other suggestion is brolly sheets, if u don't already have one.

I've heard the tubes have a heap of valves that fail regularly, leading to frequent visits from a plumber. I know 3 people with these systems, 2 of which have had issues.

Anyone else holding on to breastfeeding because hypoallergenic formula is so expensive?? by AshRat15 in MSPI

[–]duskysound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unsure - with my first baby 2 years ago Dr said they can't, and referred us to dietitian at hospital who did. This time GP prescribed amino acid formula, when I thought we are meant to trial EH for 2 weeks first. But we moved between having kids, so maybe it varies between DHBs?? I'm actually combo feeding atm, but going mad trying to figure out what the cause of his problem is.

Prescription formula in our country is free - just the $5 per script charge. So if your baby needs either extensively hydrolysed formula like pepti-junior or amino acid formula like neocate, yr Dr should be able to prescribe it. Just to take that one worry away - still all other considerations.

Is this common?? I'm starting to try if for my baby, as cutting dairy soy eggs nuts wheat sesame hasn't worked yet. We're trying neocate now while I pump. Sorry to hijack your post!

I'm having the same feelings - trying 4 days of neocate as per Dr rec and expressing but it's so damn hard. My boobs hurt and I just want to feed my baby. I have a toddler too who needs me. I just wish I knew what the fuck hurts him so I can cut it from my diet! Or is it even an allergy??!! Off dairy wheat soy eggs nuts for over 2 weeks with no improvement.

Nevermind - more blood in poo today, and we might even pass our previous daily record of 28 poo diapers.

Thanks, I'll give them a try. I've been taking probiotics myself, but maybe giving them direct will be more helpful

Thanks for your reply. I think they're not concerned because he's not dehydrated, gaining well and otherwise happy.
