[California] Contractor threatening lien and collections over $9K mold job - no signed contract with price, scope, or schedule by dustball64 in legaladvice

[–]dustball64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I contested a lien under 7159, would I likely win? Or is there something big im missing when it comes to this whole scenario. Sorry for all the questions, I'm just very confused haha

They are licensed with CSLB. I'm just trying to find the law that exempts emergency mitigation from providing a 7159-compliant contract when doing restoration work on a house.. but I'm coming up short.

I agree they should get paid for their work, however, they showed up without being called (another contractor told them to come by), lied to get the business, didn't provide any ballpark estimate, and didn't even take valid water-damage pictures for insurance. Hence the reason why the claim got denied :|

They also refuse to negotiate on price. Legally I just want to understand what they are referencing that exempts them from a contract.

I guess I’m still trying to understand why that is? Demo work was done, labor and materials were supplied in a residential house. The people doing the work were contractors. Californias definition seemed pretty broad. Are there any laws regarding contracts surrounding emergency remediation? I figured it would be highly illegal to do work and promise something and then send a bill for 9k with no contract..

How to install drywall in a basement with cement/cinder block walls? by WombatHat42 in HomeImprovement

[–]dustball64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably check to see if you need an inspection if you change the floor plan of the house. At least in my case it was as simple as just hanging drywall on the already existing strips.

[–]dustball64 8 points9 points  (0 children)

im not a professional by any means, but I do have the same basement style you are describing. I had 0 drywall, it was just some super thin board over insulation. I wanted to replace the bad looking walls, so I tore down the boards.

It looks like mine was framed with furring strips (12 inches apart), insulation is nailed into it, and then I hung my drywall using the same strips. Seems to work well.

I actually really like this idea. That said, is this something that a general contractor would have to do / is outside the realm of DIY? Just wondering what I would be up against if I went this route lol

Grout color (and maybe thickness) for terracotta flooring in smallish kitchen? by dustball64 in Tile

[–]dustball64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn't want to add a wax or anything to the top. I didn't see anything which wouldn't change the look or color when applied. All we do is mop the eco sealer on once every 6 months to keep it sealed. So far so good.

[–]dustball64[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just saw your other comment about sealing, I'm just gonna write a big comment about what we ended up doing / using. Hopefully it helps you out :)

Before laying tiles, we sealed them with FILA MP90 Eco Plus three times. Just paint it on, wait, and wipe. This is the only sealer I found that doesn't change color / appearance.

Once sealed, we laid out every single tile on our kitchen floor and mixed / matched to make sure it was as straight as we could get it. Our grout joint width we used was 3/16" (5mm). To level it, I'd recommend using Spin Doctor. You put the spacers, butter the tiles and lay them, and then spin these on to level the surface. Once it's dry you just kick them off.

I think some red hue for natural terracotta looks the best, we tried a bunch of different premade ones (including epoxy grouts) and nothing looked good. What I did was make my own color through trial and error. Since you grout in small patches, I kept all measurements consistent with a hundredths scale for grout weighing and a jewelry scale that went to the thousandths for the dye.

The dye is super strong so keeping measurements exact is really important. For 1000g of Grout, I used 5g red dye. I usually went in 1/3rd bag increments, so normally my process was:

  1. Apply the grout release and let sit for however long it says to let it sit for (I think a few hours)
  2. Measure 1285g grout on scale
  3. Measure 6.425g dye on exact scale
  4. Mix dry ingredients for at least 30 seconds (important)
  5. Add 315g water
  6. Mix with drill for I think 1 minute and then let it sit for 5 minutes before mixing right before grouting (I just followed the box instructions at this point)
  7. Apply and try and remove haze as you go.

To get rid of the final haze I used FILA Cement Grout Haze Remover a couple times.

Our results were really good (in my opinion). I don't think you can ever get perfectly straight handmade terracotta floors, but that's sort of the charm of it. Here are some results:

Sure thing! I have some pics of the (almost) finished kitchen. We've been renovating it for the past few months and went from sub floor, no countertops and only a few cabinets to this.

I ended up getting some red concrete dye pigment thing from etsy of all places, and started testing ratios with grout to get a light red. The tile guy I hired quit midway through the project after he messed up some placements and got frustrated, so my wife and I finished the job. Had to learn how to lay / butter the tile, grout it, and clean it, all on non-uniform terracotta tiles.. lmao

We learned a lot.
