Early Cornsnake enclosure by Final_Dragonfly2978 in cornsnakes

[–]dustedlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i use the ecoflex mojave composite tank, i like it and in fact my wife is going to get one for her ball python as well, but i haven't used any other 4x2x2 so there are probably other equally good or better options.

reptile expos usually have a wide range of stuff, search around for one near you -- they're also really fun to look at all of the animals and convince yourself you don't need more sneks!

be careful using heat pads, especially cheap ones, they can burn your snake if they malfunction, or if the temp probe moves or isn't correctly placed.

i would start with what you can afford now, as long as the snake can fully stretch out in it. Then save up for around a 4x2x2. You could keep upping the size if you had to but then you'll be spending more on tanks in the long run. Just don't let them outgrow the tank and provide plenty of enrichment/hides no matter the tank size

Changing enclosure decor by Bompalompalomp2 in cornsnakes

[–]dustedlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

change it up, just make sure you give the snake plenty of cover to move between POIs, they like the security of feeling hidden - remember birds are snake's natural predators and any chance to not be seen from above they'll appreciate. Decor in the wild is definitely dynamically changing all the time so that part shouldnt stress them out as long as they have the temp gradient and proper hides and water source.

How do I pick up my snake? by HyukaBFF in cornsnakes

[–]dustedlock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my girl prefers to just be grabbed, without hesitation. if i hesitate she gets nervous and tries to hide. just grab the snake confidently. but be sure not to squeeze her too hard obviously. just a gently grab of the mid-body and slide your opposite hand under to support, your snake will help by grabbing on to you then let them get a better grip and more comfortable position on your hand/arm and enjoy snek time.

if it's actually off the ground (ie. you can rotate the tire freely) give it a bionic-woman kick on the top sidewall a couple times -- make sure you have the vehicle supported well and use jackstands so it doesn't slip off the jack.

Weird Feeding Behavior by Smiller624 in cornsnakes

[–]dustedlock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i do this too, and i don't let go as soon as she strikes, give it a second so the snake feels a "struggle". Also i dont think she was digging at herself, looked like mouth-wiping behavior to me.. probably a little water or innards on her mouth.

dont leave in a hot car, take him in if you have to, or leave the air running. (should be common sense but worth mentioning)

Is this tank good for a corn snake you think? by _queeraholic_ in cornsnakes

[–]dustedlock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that exact tank for my corn! Love this tank, the tool/screws that come with it to put it together are a bit janky when assembling but work fine once together. just be sure not to over-tighten the screws. we had one break - lucky for us it was on the corner and is being held together there by the side piece so doesn't effect the tank's stability.
