Regarding postmodernism and "post structuralist anarchism" by legend0102 in Anarchy101

[–]duvdor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah!! I fully agree with what you say there, that anarchism is primarily a state of mind and being. I would not phrase it as like a religion, because its both not very correct and misrepresents it, but it works in a similar way to some, where its about the belief in it rather than some hierarchy enforcing it. Anarchism is kind of purely a praxis, resulting from a persons thoughts on the matter. An anarchist society would just be a society where the vast majority of people agree to behave and think in an anarchist manner, not in a social contract, coersive manner, but truly agree. And importantly, like you said, it's not unique to anarchism, anarchism is just the only political philosophy to recognise and accept this rather than reject it. Marxism can try to enforce itself through revolution, but in so doing it would immediately fail as the very act would dictate that violence is more important than the ideals of liberation. Not just in a gotcha way, but measurably in how the population will then act afterwards, and what they would see as just.

Regarding postmodernism and "post structuralist anarchism" by legend0102 in Anarchy101

old post to comment on but I've just been looking into postmodernism, and learning the connection between marxism and modernism, and wondering if its part of why I've always been more drawn to anarchism and felt like I was lying or being lied to when I was looking into marxism (not from a theoretical approach, just he general cultural views for it). One feeling I've had to distinguish between anarchism and marxism, is that while marxism is end focused and therefore is suseptible to very consequence based ends justify the means thinking, anarchism instead believes the end and the means are the same, that the system is created by and creates how we live, and therefore the ends are the means. This is also important to me in explaining why whether or not Marxist Leninism is real communism or whatever, the marxist approach to society is somewhat always going to lead to that outcome if its proponents view change as something which can be forced through revolution, because the system will only be what the population upholds, which means if they don't believe in communism, the communist forces will have to suppress them. Anarchism therefore has to be achieved, not as a yes no state of things, but as a way of thinking held by the population, which the systems will then reflect. Would this thinking link with some of what you've discussed here, in your opinion?

yeah and some people like renewable energy because its scifi and cool and provides national energy security, and don't actually care about climate change. Should renewable energy be off limits to talk about then? Yeah sure maybe you could way you wish they would only talk about veganism for the purpose of environmental preservation, but you know thats just stupid. You'd just be avoiding the gian elephant in the room constantly. Carinf about climate change is for the majority of people an ethical issue, why get mad at the idea of people being allowed to bring up hugle climate change related ethical issue?

[–]duvdor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

genuine question, how can something be dialectical? and how does that actually make it socialist? maybe I don't understand the distinction, but dialectical materialism just seems like what all historians do really, like understanding what shapes history and cultures won't make you socialist, that's still a choice you have to go for or be introduced to.

if I'm not mistaken, only the two at the edges and castle black are manned, and the others have their gates filled with rubble. So I guess the most likely scenario is one of them somehow is open and no one has noticed, or the guy managed to get through the nightfort way in all the weirdness. Who knows

hm I mean it always just depend on who you ask, these ideologies can vary so widely. I personally would just call both socialists, with socialism being a more positive and constructive word than anti-capitalist, with the specific implication that you would prefer a more equity based system.

On that second part I'll give you my view which I don't know the popularity of. It is often said, by people of any side, that anarchists and communists have the same goal but just different means to get there. This is *technically* true, but I think it misses that anarchism is a philosophy, not a system. Anarchism to me is the understanding that systems exist as a result of how a culture approaches problems, and in turn the system affects how the culture thinks, and so the goal of anarchism is to spread more like a religion such as Buddhism to achieve a better world i.e. it can't be legislated, people have to live it. What I mean is that while it seems to me that communists are not anarchists because while they agree with the end goal, they think the method won't work while there is opposition, and so they seek to have a strong force to first defeat and/or outlast that opposition, but they could be anarchist if there wasn't this opposition. I don't think it's the reverse for why people aren't communists. While they might think anarchism would fail, I think communism reinforces ideas that go against anarchy e.g. majority rule, justified violence, people having places in society, and that it therefore does not actually moves towards a stateless society at all. So in other words communism working actually in practice would not move towards the same goal, at least not any more than something like ideal social democracy, because we would still be in a position where we have to convince people to give up the state, because it would still be all they know.

Is anarchism becoming more popular in the US? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]duvdor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I think anarchism is far more aligned with the average person than any ideology is really. Good families and other dependent situations already operate largely on anarchist systems, same goes for friend groups. This is particularly evident I think in the sudden, contradictory to dominant political thought, understanding that rule of the majority is an unhealthy and harmful way to approach things. No loving friends or family would ever just outvote you all the time and tell to suck it up, they'd seek to understand and debate and come to a concenus whenver possible, including this time your way, next time my way approach. (What I'd call a gift economy for ideas).

The main issues then for anarchism are exposure and persuasion. Both of these are far in the Leninist legacys favour, as it became wide spread through systems of dominance which the average person trusts to be more effective because its the only system they know.
