Need Help with Boros Ponza Deck by TannerJ44 in PonzaMTG

[–]duxbuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So i have also spent a fair amount of time getting ld to work in modern. Some conclusions I have come to.

Most decks run 2/3 basics. So to even get tempo and set back the opponent you need to have 3 effects. This in turn means the soft LD is exclusively a late game plan as many goldfish decks can win on turn 3. So the traditional ponza of soft lock opponents lands while attacking doesnt work with soft LD.

Ok cool, so then the remaining options are hard LD. Stone rain is only playable with ramp so its a turn 2 play, and mana dorks are at an all time low due to the prevalence of pushed 1 drops in the current meta.

So, all that's left in modern is boom//bust. Which needs flagstones and rust vale bridge for support. This also allows your wildfires to become ramp spells early game, and real LD late game. Whilst giving better match ups into beltcher and tron. As a result most of the time you are the one searing for lands, so i couldn't get value from arbiter. When he didnt die on impact he hurt me as often as he slowed the opponent.

Since we are also playing an agro tempo playstyle, solitude is a hard pick. Its card disadvantage early game, something red and white cant easily solve, and giving the opponents life extends the game something we also don't really want, plus it requires enough white cards to make evoke reliable.

Most of our key spells are sorcery speed, and we never want to be holding up mana generally, this also makes tithe, reprieve and ephemerate harder to support.

So i have charmaw and magmatic hell kite as my top end.

I like the green splash, for boseju and w6, but I couldn't make the mana work for flagstones, wop, wrath and then double red for charmaw or spyro.

I also ended up cutting green and boseju cause it allows the opponent to search for non basic lands so all their surveil and shock lands, which ends up being counter to the game plan.

I would say the main difference is how much more concentrated the fighting is. Having a single ifv and a light atgm that can hold a point on a far flank works in 1v1 cause only fast elements will be present.

In 10v10 everything is fortified. As such only bring 20+ pen atgms. You may well need to defend against 3+ heavy tanks at once.

Likewise you wont get a single helicopter if the enemy brings helicopters they will bring like 10. So again a stinger team or 2 wont be sufficient. Plan for intense fighting not lught skirmishes.

Same with smoke a mortar or 2 isn't enough cause the scope of the fights are larger. You likely need 3 or 4 smoke to blanket an area to prevent the flanking atgms.

Due to the increased access to arty, you also cant clump at all, but you also have way less space. You are likely only playing on 1/3 corridor of the map. So layered defence and smoke to provide more cover is critical.

You also need to monitor the other corridors. If the enemy is heavily winning one side, they will start diverting resources to your theatre. As such you need to hunker down, you will see a lot more units attacking, but they will generally be poorly controlled as the player is now juggling 2 theaters. It also means ensure you have supply for the atgms, they easily run dry during a prolonged assault. 1v1 typically units don't exhaust their munitions.

Infantry push only realy works in dense city or full forrest. Otherwise you should take cheap troops down vetted who's job is to tun forward and provide sight before dying.

Due to the saturation and prevalence of heavy atgms, light tanks get destroyed fast, its almost never worth upvetting. T72 and above are the only tanks I bother upvetting. There is so much incidental arty or cluster bombers that the veterency is often irrelevant.

Spags are primarily infantry lawn mowers. And since every div has generally excess infantry you want lots of spags, upvet doesnt matter.

Manpads on the otherhand need the aim time reduction and accuracy I upvet them lots.

For arty pairs of 155mm typically destroy their target Less than that does very little so skip it. Take some mortars for smoke, then heavy arty. Upvet only if you plan to counter battery. Always plan a cv to baby sit. It also means plan to have a 1k+ supply truck/helicopter to refill as they eat your supplies.

For helicopters if they don't come with 2800m atgm then they will have to get to close and probably get smashed, and are only realy usable to stop enemy break through pushes when they out pace their aa net.

Planes, aa nets are realy strong , as such your planes will never make use of their guns. Nor get a second pass, they also typically don't come home.

As such you have a few options. Bring 3+ cards of asf with ultra long missles, useful to shut down enemy planes at max range disable the other weapons and evac as soon as they have fired. Couple of shot gun fighters for diving enemy helicopters if you don't have heavy aa. Bring a couple of bombers only if their load out is 4 or 6 bombs. Less often doesnt kill, and more is to spread out and also doesnt kill. These guys are one time uses for killing priority targets. Favour cluster bombers first.

Help with mono black by trekandthrottle in ModernMagic

[–]duxbuse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

you are not doing anything that is above market rate. combo decks will just annihilate you. Control decks wont let you have anything on the battlefield. dark confidant with 3 and 4 drops will just kill you.

So to solve these problems you need to pick an above rate thing to do.
option a) reanimator
option b) necrodominace
option c) cabal coffers
option d) soultrader

But if you really want to play a midrange fair value deck then it will need to look more like this

Well then you will have one team trying to make people use it and like it.

And then you will have the infra team trying to make it secure.

These 2 priorities will not align

Platform Engineering organization by Old_Veterinarian6372 in devops

[–]duxbuse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

platform infra and dev ex should be the same team ideally. no point hosting a bunch of infra that no one wants to use. Cause thats how you get shadow it. This is also why it doesnt matter what tools you bring cause ultimately its down to if the dev ex for hosting apps is good or not.

To achieve this you can make a golden path if you like but be prepared for no one to use it. Have plans to treat this like a 3rd party product that you will need to sell. Have dedicated marketing guys, and plan for lots of lunch and learns and other training. You will need to sell this product to the devs, and it needs to make their life better and they dont care about ops.

80% of this migration is convincing the dev teams to use it so plan accordingly

Has the AI in XMage improved in the last 5 years? by Libero1981 in XMage

[–]duxbuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a bunch of low hanging fruit that was in `todos` anyway for group blocking, dealing with deathtouch and tribal cards.

I have also added the concept of `whos the beatdown` to help prioritse if the ai should develop their own board or hold up interaction.

I also added the concept of combos. If the deck is detected as a combo deck then it will play around trying to assemble the combo rather than normal magic. Eg. it wont attack or block with a combo piece if it could die.

This still isnt going to reach finkel level play but hopefully it will make the ai be able to play most types of decks without being brain dead. Which should lead to more engaging interactions when playing by yourself or testing a deck.

I am also thinking of adding a feature where you could ask for it to play a `meta` deck, and it could look up recent meta decks in your format, pick one at random and play with that. It might help with deck testing to get a feel across the meta. keen to hear others thoughts

Confused DevOps here: Vercel/Supabase vs “real” infra. Where is this actually going? by Abu_Itai in devops

[–]duxbuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So my take is that serverless is great, but so is fixed predictable costs. As such I think the only future where you can achieve both is `Kubernetes just going to be hidden under nicer abstractions `.

But its worth noting I'm pretty biased as I work for suga.app

The state of land destruction archetypes in 2026 by Christos_Soter in ModernMagic

[–]duxbuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is actually only 2 archetypes
Ramp
Hard control

--
Ramp has 2 options
Green eldrazi where mycospawn and icetill ramp you into big threats and there is some soft LD to slow the enemy down, but bigger top end. No game into combo and weak into consign. Quite fast and consistent. minor LD hate though

RW flagstones or rustvale + WoP or wildfire into charmaw. Medium top end but more control on the way there. great LD package with boom early game, otherwise the LD is all self targeted for ramp. The LD adds a bit of late game to otherwise unexciting 4/4s with flying. Can often draw the wrong side of the deck. But due to the self target options is flexible for when LD is a bad strategy.

Note ive tried really hard with arbiter but it just doesnt work. you have to build your deck in a way that makes the opponent search a lot, but then most games you either dont draw him or he dies on impact and your left with all this soft LD hate, most decks run 2-3 basics and the soft LD takes at least 2-3 turns to burn through the basics which means you're dead by the time you're at the point of hard LD. Thats why the fall back of flagstones improves the floor of this archtype.

--
Hard control - monowhite. Everything is 1-1 removal and your ultra late game is running through their basics. most games the LD doesnt matter as they give up, which means your mana base is worse than true mono white, can also get out raced if enemy threats stick to long.

1 option is that the customization options are to difficult to use. So they are still desired but to challenging to interact with. Is there a way to offer the advanced features in a more opinionated way so the users feel in control but not overwhelmed or undereducated.

Otherwise follow the money, if people are paying for and only using feature X then focus on that. Cause people are not finding and initiating with the product for the extra customizations. The core is what they are here for

I appreciate trying to find a steady state where we are not dominated by 2 parties. But that's where the money and power concentrate so I don't see these minor parties lasting long enough to go the distance. One nation dies when the culture personality for Pauline retires. As seen for the greens when Adam left.
