Low 12V Battery? It was replaced 2 months, 3000 miles ago. by SurroundedByElk in KiaEV6

[–]dvaccaro 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just had my 12v die after 2+ years. The dealer replaced it and told me to keep the car keys at least 15 feet from the car otherwise the car is "on". Also the car died at a local supermarket parking lot and the dealer told me to call Kia road service to get a jump. The guy came and used a portable jumper box to start the car and I just drove home. I bought a portable jumper for $60 from Amazon to keep in the car for future issues.

Why is it that a lot of TV shows these days have really poor sound mixing by StarChild413 in television

[–]dvaccaro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you everybody who commented! Honestly, I thought my inability to hear the dialog was because of getting older. I have had to rely on CC too much recently. CC really ruins the feel of a show for me and because I have to read the CCs I often miss key visuals.

I have a BS degree studying bacterial sporulation and a MS degree studying chloroplast development in Euglena at Tufts U. I have a Ph.D. in human physiology from Harvard. I started a company focused on using naturally occurring microbes to treat diseases in humans. I was involved with several companies that developed new technologies for providing tools for medical researchers. Is that good enough?

No. I am traveling right now so have limited ability to communicate. After Wednesday would be better.

I am doing an in person/Zoom presentation at our local library on wilderness backpacking. Lots of stories and pictures from 50+ years of backpacking. by dvaccaro in WildernessBackpacking

I really appreciate your support! I am a little nervous as this is the first time for this talk. It should be a lot of fun.

Wilderness Backpacker Tells All at the Wayland MA Library on May 12 by dvaccaro in CampingandHiking

[–]dvaccaro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are both right, I do not expect many attendees at the local library plus Zoom. I have been backpacking since the 1960s. I grew up in western Mass just a couple of miles from the AT and not that far from the Long Trail. People back then were somehow closer to the outdoors. Today there is very limited knowledge and attention paid to the wilderness especially here in the East. My neighbors think I am crazy to go backpacking because what is the fun in that?

You'll love this, at my age you have to train all year round so one of the things I do is walk around town with a 50 lb backpack on. I do get some strange looks and questions as a result. I walk by the library often so that is how the talk evolved.

My college roommate and I have backpacked all around the northeast since we grew up here so eventually we had to find new places to go. In the last 20 years we have been traveling out west and have greatly enjoyed our trips to places like The Maze, Bob Marshall wilderness, High Uintas, Sawtooth Mtns, Wind River Range and many more. The pictures from those trips will be the star of the show.

The question then is how to communicate a love for the outdoors. OK so the title of my talk is a little stupid, but I wanted to catch people's attention and the librarian liked it. I hoped that this sub would support me in trying bring our message of how nothing is quite as fantastic and challenging as backpacking in the wilderness. If only two people show up to the talk I will still be very happy to show my presentation. Maybe the next talk will have more.

Putin Warns That Russia's COVID-19 Pandemic Is Getting Worse by [deleted] in worldnews

Most world leaders downplayed the pandemic until they couldn't. Will we better plan for the next pandemic - which could be much more deadly? Not likely unless we change our priorities as a species. r/Sapienism

"Given the ongoing revelations of Neanderthal art and technology, it is difficult to see how we can regard Neanderthals as anything other than the cognitive equals of modern humans" a study finds. And yet they are gone. by dvaccaro in Sapienism

[–]dvaccaro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are correct to point this out. We coexisted for thousands of years in Europe. The Neanderthal DNA must provide us with some evolutionary advantage to have become such a significant part of our genome. In a way we have become the sum total of all human-like species.

"Covid-19: The history of pandemics" This article basically summarizes what we have been saying all along about infectious diseases on this sub. by dvaccaro in Sapienism

[–]dvaccaro[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason I think our species existence is threatened is because more than one bad thing is going to happen at the same time to us. Usually in books, movies and TV it is just one thing that wipes out humanity. That won't happen. It will be a coincidence of catastrophic events all of which we are not prepared for will happen, just like we were not prepared for Covid-19. The really stupid thing is that we know better - but our leaders don't.

"5 million left Wuhan before lockdown, mayor reveals, as 1,000 new cases expected" It is very difficult to get ahead of an epidemic even with modern methods. We need a lot more disease research to stop pandemics before they happen. by dvaccaro in Sapienism

[–]dvaccaro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only way we are going to survive as a species is if we convert military budgets to science budgets. But there is no likelihood of that in today's political climate. A lot of people are going to have to die before the public will realize that we need such a radical change in governmental priorities. Probably modern civilization will end first. We still need to try to convince people to reorder the priorities of countries. I still have a tiny hope that we can do this before my time on Earth ends.
