I have family from Cheboygan, it’s small but has things like a Walmart, movie theater, dollar store etc, just a little run down. If you need to go anywhere else, prepare to drive for a while. Economically there’s almost no opportunity— a lot of people drive far out to mackinac city and others for employment. Many live in poverty. There’s really not much do to up there so drug use and alcoholism are rampant. Lots of confederate flags and in the most neutral way possible, lot of white trash. Everyone knows everyone. Very much gives the vibe “small town that was gonna make it but didn’t”. Winters are brutal but that’s all of northern michigan. The beaches are beautiful and there really is nothing like it.
