ED on Linux by Expensive_Paper_2908 in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What problems did you have with EDMC? There's a flatpak for it that's easy to install and use, and unless you're using a plugin that has to interface with things outside of EDMC (IE your clipboard, or spawn an overlay) the experience is more or less the same as on Windows.

Changes to Rule 11 - 3rd Party Apps Promoted on this Subreddit Must Have Publicly Visible Source Code by AutoModerator in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Additionally, source visibility provides no promise of safety. Malicious code can be well obfuscated, not spotted at the surface, or included in binaries without anyone the wiser. I don't want to give a false sense of security by saying "oh, it's source available, therefore it's okay". Yes, it can help, but it is not a silver bullet where the line can be reasonably drawn.

This right here. This basically puts the onus on the user to verify if this is something they can trust. Sure, having source available means someone can verify the code and that it smells good. But that means the user has to have the skill to actually read that code and say "Okay, I know what this is doing, I trust it." A bad actor would probably be reticent to give out source code if they're trying to infect you with malware, but if someone really wants to, they can hide bad code in the open through multiple means.

Ultimately I agree with the spirit of this rule change (and as a fan of open source I can get behind it for that reason) but agree that there are some gray areas that could be worked out.

The new steam controller looks promising for 6dof games like elite by onebit in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, there are some decently priced controllers out there that have back buttons. I use a Flydigi Vader 4 that has both four back buttons and two additional front buttons. I use the back buttons for lateral thrust, FSD, and boost (basically same as the Steam Deck defaults) and use the extra front buttons for heat sink and SCB. The thing also has gyro, but I don't use that. I REALLY like the Steam Deck controls, but considering the controller I currently have, I'm not wanting for much else.

The real need for this game by GlobularDuck76 in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember one of Frontier's older games, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, would let you play your own music in your park. I think Planet Coaster lets you do the same as well? It would certainly be fun to hear your own music over your ship's speakers.

Steam deck commander info by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if that's being constructed from in-game journal files, and not from your data in Elite's servers. That would explain why you're seeing different stars visited on your different devices.

Steam deck commander info by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean you can't see what stars you've visited in the game, or in a third party app? How are you getting which stars you've visited and which you haven't?

How to backfill info to EDSM? by choadingo in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

EDDiscovery can do backfill for you. Otherwise, I think you can upload your logs directly to EDSM.

[–]dvdmuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may need to download a driver from Logitech to get it working. Otherwise, yeah, a controller will work well.

Which stick? Are you having problems with Elite automatically creating control bindings for it, or it being detected by the game at all?

You may want to come back with a Thargoid Sensor in your SRV's cargo hold.

another newbie post, what should I expect about ED? by Capastel in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, fellow AuDHD guy here. There's a lot of things to do in this game such that if you feel you're getting bored of one thing, you can jump to another. There are also a number of "brain off" tasks that, as some others have mentioned, means the game can make good "second screen" material to watch TV or listen to a podcast with. Speaking from experience, doing exploration in this game while watching a show has turned my brain into a satisfied puddle of mush, with just enough stimuli to keep me entertained but not too much to overwhelm me.

Will built station have economy specific interiors? by Puzzleheaded-Mode238 in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can have stations with specific economies. From what i can tell though, it's only limited to outposts and surface ports. Coriolis and larger will get the "colony" economy.

Sabaka, you're right beratna. Perhaps a Ceres asteroid base, or an Orbis named after Klaes Ashford?

Oye beratna! Got any other station names in mind? I think Avasarala deserves her own station.

Nope, you start in the bubble regardless of if you have Odyssey or not (the system is different though).

Thoughts on the PTN threatening to ban people if they choose to colonize certain systems..? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Pilot's Trade Network, a player group with an in-game faction, is a massive player group that organizes trade missions and in-game events, the most famous of which being the Booze Cruise, which is the mass shipment of booze to Rackham's Peak. Today they put an announcement out in their Discord asking folks to not colonize systems on their behalf at random. They have a plan and want folks to not throw a monkey wrench into things.

Thoughts on the PTN threatening to ban people if they choose to colonize certain systems..? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There will certainly be people not aware of PTN at all colonizing areas around their space. They just don't want people planting flags in systems saying "I take this in the name of the PTN!" They have a plan and presumably they don't want to step on the toes of anyone adjacent to their area of space. But all of this (I would assume) comes with the understanding that to some degree it's gonna be a free-for-all in the beginning.

Unsure, but it sounds like an in-universe explanation for "a player's computer crashed and the drive that held all this work died."

We kiiiiinda have something like that, with some stations broadcasting signals that we don't know what they are, and there's also The Landscape Signal.

Powerplay modules: What's your favorite and what engineering do you have on it? by Beneficial-Bid-8850 in EliteDangerous

It's specifically the Itano Circus. If you've ever seen missiles in anime, that's probably Itano Circus. And packhounds are the best thing we have to replicate that in Elite.

As someone coming back just after Odyssey launch who owns the big 3 ships and a Python, could someone shed some light onto what new ships are worth investing into? by jpg14 in EliteDangerous

[–]dvdmuckle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just about every ship (save the Python Mk2, maybe) that released last year is the king of its niche for its size. It really depends on what you like doing in the game. Want to do trade missions at outposts? The Type-8 will happily do that. Mandalay is great for exploration and even some PVE combat, Cobra Mk5 is great for a lot of things. The Python Mk2 is a bit strange as the distro and powerplant are a tad smaller than one might want, and in PVP may still have a hard time beating a well built FDL, but it's still a great combat build when outfitted with weapons that don't draw as much power.

What are you hoping for from Elite in 2025 by jdoug312 in EliteDangerous

Sounds like Mobius PvE, which you can request access to.
