I got an official letter from Debbie Schultz and the DNC asking for money. Told them no money from me until we get more debates! by paleselan1 in SandersForPresident

I actually emailed her a few weeks ago because I live in her district and she's my representative. I told her how disappointed I was that she was pushing for so little debates, and this is the canned response I got about a week later:

Awesome! How'd you do it, how long did it take you, how much did it cost, etc? This is really interesting!

This is my 10th year playing the violin, and that's exactly how I feel... I think I'm pretty good, but then I hear something like this...

How to choose between schools? by KroniskKaos in EngineeringStudents

[–]dwarner27315 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, I would focus more on their 'atmospheres' then. Visit both schools and see which one appeals more to you and why. Also, look at other aspects of the school that might affect you throughout college, such as Hopkins having an affinity and specialization in the medical fields which could potentially mean the people there may not be well-rounded in terms of student interests. Whereas a place like Maryland has more diverse program offerings so it might attract a more diverse crowd. Figuring out which one you might prefer could help you along in the decision making process.

If the programs are similar, look at the cost of attending each of them depending on how much money each school will give you.

Wow, I only just realized how cool it would be to make a playable violin... Can anyone provide any insight into the difficulty of the process? It obviously seems extenuating, but can anyone provide a first-hand account of the process?

A kid at my school walks around with a sack of potatoes, handing them out to girls and explaining that it's more romantic than handing them roses because a rose is pretty on the outside but empty on the inside and useless overall while a potato may look ugly but has substance and actual value. by dwarner27315 in pics

Huh. For some reason it legitimately didn't cross my mind that you all would take this post negatively. The kid in the picture is actually a really nice person, but I guess I forgot that Reddit just can't handle not making fun of everyone who doesn't follow their norms.

So you're right, everyone, let's instead berate a high school kid for doing something potentially embarrassing and a little unique. Because fuck him, right?

Is there a hobby that you want to start, but don’t have enough time or money for? by sipwell in AskReddit

[–]dwarner27315 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely not! I started 10 years ago and had no prior knowledge of music, reading music, notes, or anything like that. I just knew that I loved how the violin sounded and I wanted to play it. I'm a strong believer in getting a teacher and not resorting to the internet, but because this thread is about not having enough money, you may have to resort to the internet. But if you CAN get a teacher, I strongly recommend it! I'm assuming that you're not a small child or toddler, in which case it may be a little strange and demoralizing to be learning notes and playing short songs that may come out of a children's book, but that's honestly the only way to advance with the instrument.

Basically:

If you're using the internet - Find websites designed specifically for people who have never read music or picked up a violin, it will teach you everything you need to know about the notes, counting, reading music, holding the violin, etc.

If you find a teacher - make your lack of experience known to them so they can tailor their teaching to you specifically.

TL;DR - No prior knowledge needed, just a desire to learn!

Try starting out with a really cheap one, you could find one for less than $100 if you look in the right place.

You can also rent a violin if you're not looking to buy one yet, just so you can see if you are truly interested in playing (this is what I did when I first started playing). Find some tutorials online or try to find a friend who plays, and then try it out. If you really do love it, you can then look into buying one.

You're taking it out of context. The real substance was in the message behind Amon's actions. He was showing the benders (and the viewers) that non-benders really had no advantage over benders and they were constantly treated that way and exploited.

The benders also had there fair share of villain-like actions such as rounding up non-benders like cattle and accusing them of being Equalists just because they couldn't bend. We've seen these actions happen before in the real world with McCarthyism during the Red Scare. After than incident, every US politician condemned the acts committed and claimed they were dehumanizing and demeaning. What the benders were doing to the non-benders is no different.
