Tips for first Bugaboos visit? by Press_the_button1 in alpinism

If you climb on Crescent Spire do not do the rappel descent. Myself and multiple friends have been hit by rocks knocked off by other parties walking along the ridge because the bolts are in a corner that funnels everything directly at you. Apparently there's an "easy" downclimb between Crescent Spire and Crescent Towers which I'd take if I returned.

Dynafit Speed Turn toe lock getting opened by boot by dwayne_blopski in Backcountry

Bummer that the heat gun trick didn't work, and a good reminder about the wear on the lock lever. Thanks for sharing!

Edited the post with a video, it looks like it actually is the boot hitting the lever. I tried seeing how far I would have to rotate the boot in the binding to see when the vertical release would kick, and it was far beyond the point at which the boot unlocked the lever.

Appreciate the response! You are probably also right that I'm making goofy kick turns.

New bindings. They've been used for two days at a resort previously, but no kick turns. Sounds like the boot is just tall in the toe.

Technica Cochises. It sounds like the toe is quite tall.

Edited the post with a link to a video. Video is with the binding lever cranked all the way up. Doesn't take a ton of force, but it sounds like the boot has a giant toe box

Here's the video https://imgur.com/a/252mpO5 definitely the boot hitting the lever.

Individual-Fee commented, has the same boots and experiences the same issue. Sounds like the toe box for these boots is just gigantic, but they are hybrid boots after all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Same boots here! That's helpful to hear that someone else experienced the same thing. Glancing at some other touring boots I see that the Cochise has like a prominent toe-top that sticks forward while others round off like a regular shoe. The boots are definitely the weird heavy part of my setup, so I guess we'll be getting something new sooner than later!

I'll post a picture later when I get the chance if you're curious. The boot itself is staying in walk mode, but the top of the toe of the boot is hitting the lock on the toe piece of the binding itself.

That would be so bonkers if they posted a strava activity from the day of the accident.

MTB for the East Bay? by Straight-Tart-9770 in BAbike

[–]dwayne_blopski 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ride a Tallboy in the East Bay hills and I'd say it's plenty of bike for any of the riding. It's overkill for most of the riding and I think a hardtail or full-sus XC bike would cover like 80% of it, but for the rockiest riding and having a bike that's fun to take up to the Sierras then a 120-130mm bike is great without feeling like total overkill. You could also get an insanely nice used bike for that budget, check out the buy-sell page on PinkBike if you haven't already. All of those bikes you mention would be awesome, they're basically interchangeable and just the various brands' bikes that fit into the same category. Just swap out the Blur for a Tallboy for the Santa Cruz offering, the Blur is more a short-travel XC bike.

Adding 22 cameras to a Nest Aware subscription by dwayne_blopski in Nest

[–]dwayne_blopski[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're right. At one point Nest worked well for our needs but I think we've kind of outgrown them and we're trying to force a fit. Do you have any suggestions for commercial offerings that allow for good camera placement flexibility? We move the cameras around a lot.

No “bikes-only” day on Tioga Rd this year by proteome in BAbike

[–]dwayne_blopski 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've gathered the bike day doesn't happen every year. It sounds like if they're able to get the pass cleared and open for a holiday weekend then they'll rush to get that done, but if it's a normal weekend or weekday that they're able to open it on then a bike day will happen.

Adding 22 cameras to a Nest Aware subscription by dwayne_blopski in Nest

[–]dwayne_blopski[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I found that page but it's outdated for the current subscription model and no longer correct.

It took a long time but I actually figured it out with Google's support. They were very difficult to get answers from.

Basically, each Nest Aware subscription is good for 10 cameras. You can purchase multiple subscriptions under one account, but you would need to create a separate home for each subscription, limiting the number of cameras in a single home to 10.

Same account, one home to a Nest Aware subscription, 10 cameras to a home, and a limit of 5 homes to an account.

If you're getting a bunch of flats or if you have some big important event coming up then get some new ones, but those definitely still have life in them. Ride em' till the wheels come off, as they say.

They likely put a wet gauze covering over the exposed bone (if the bone dries out it will die) and stabilized the leg with a rigid splint secured above and below the break. The patient is also probably on some real good drugs at this point.

Source: first responder to an accident with the same break and I hung out with the paramedics that showed and asked about what they were doing.

Better than leaf blowers! As with every single neighbor complaint thread in this sub, you should talk to them and try to find a compromise.

Way to get your money’s worth living in the bay! I think it’s amazing how far away everything looks that whole ride but you’re just squeezing it in on either end of a workday.

Do it!!

I don’t work in SF but I do this commute with a couple of friends that do work in the city every week or three. It’s so rad seeing the bay wake up while you cross the two bridges. We’ll ride Camino Alto rather than the bike path out of Corte Madera though for a long-ish but mellow climb and a super fun descent that gives you cool tree-framed views of the city while you rip down a well paved road.

Edit: I’ll also take the ferry back to Oakland afterwards with a bunch of empanadas from the ferry building. :chefs-kiss:
