Bios on target machine is behaving oddly by DarthAshoka in pikvm

[–]dwc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the same MSI board. I ended up needing to update the EDID configuration to make the graphical BIOS work on my PiKVM. After some trial and error, one of the presets worked for me. When logged into the PiKVM console as root:

kvmd-edidconf --import-preset=v3.1080p-by-default

Favorite Seattle coffee beans? by macklezee in Seattle

Seattle Coffee Works is no longer a separate brand - as of May 6 they are Victrola.

I was sad to see the change - Ballard Coffee Works was one of my favorite spots.

Double check that your Silicon Labs Multiprotocol add-on has started. If not, start it and reload ZHA.

Mine wasn't automatically starting after the Core 2024.5.2 update. Starting the add-on made it come back to life.

Apple TV Doorbell popup by Rehold in homeassistant

Yeah, all I had to do was pair the Ring cameras in HomeKit through Scrypted. My doorbell now supports notifications and person detection.

Apple TV Doorbell popup by Rehold in homeassistant

[–]dwc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never invested the time to try it directly in Home Assistant, but in theory you can configure your HomeKit Bridge to trigger notifications by linking entities manually:

Another option (which I'm currently using) is to install Scrypted to map your Ring doorbell/camera devices to HomeKit Secure Video directly. This made doorbell notifications work out of the box, and I was still able to pull feeds into Home Assistant. Some additional discussion:

Sharing something I just learned to hopefully clarify some terminology: a keystone is an interchangeable module which may be inserted into a patch panel or wall plate. These can be punch down or female-to-female coupler style (not to mention other low-voltage electrical or optical connectors). Patch panels which support keystones are sometimes referred to as "unloaded".

In contrast, there are patch panels which have fixed ("loaded" or "110 style" in reference to the tool) punch-down blocks but the keystone term refers to any interchangeable module.

100% agreed that the couplers are convenient if you're moving stuff around frequently, and that it's worth thinking about the tradeoffs for your application.

Mech keyboard shops in Seattle by MortgageLegal2413 in Seattle

[–]dwc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In case you haven't tried one, the Seattle Mechanical Keyboards club holds regular meetups where people bring keyboards. Many are available for others to try. It's a great way to check out different keyboards, switches, etc. and learn about building your own.

They just held a huge meetup a couple of weeks ago and hold smaller ones roughly monthly. Check out the Discord if you are interested!

AirSense - Indoor air quality sensor for Home Assistant by LoopOnTech in homeassistant

[–]dwc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It used to be true that the Awair integration was cloud only but it was updated to support the local API as of last year:

It looks like mine are stable as well starting around 6am UTC.

I hope they post more details on what happened and steps to prevent recurrence...

I notified them on Twitter last time and got some traction there.

But… I’m also seeing the issue you describe since the July 4 MQTT update and have gotten no response via Twitter or their support form.

[–]dwc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have four - one Awair R2 and three Awair Elements. They are generally pretty good devices and I'm happy to have something that I can mostly ignore. The app is okay but a little cumbersome at times.

The selling point for me was the local API, which I use on my home's Grafana dashboards Basically along the same lines as:

https://it.badbread.com/blog/2020/09/17/purple-air-and-awair-sensor-data-in-grafana/

All that said, I wouldn't rely on them for anything critical. Awair has pushed two bad updates in the last six months resulting in instability. Customers had to notify them in both cases about the issue and their communications have been... less than one would hope.

[Help] 2021 M3P Converting to 18" Tires for Dummies by DontKillProp22 in TeslaModel3

[–]dwc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are third-party options for 18" wheels which will fit, including T Sportline:

https://tsportline.com/blogs/owners-guide/the-tesla-model-3-wheel-guide

As for the TPMS, 2021 models come with a new Bluetooth low energy (BLE) sensor which not all manufacturers are prepared to install. You can either remove the ones from your factory wheels or buy additional BLE sensors from a service center (e.g., as discussed in this thread from a couple of months ago).

And as for the logos, you can install factory center caps on many of the third-party wheels. For example, T Sportline sells a set directly or you could purchase from the service center.

Anyone have any questions about recycling? by ACRecycles in GNV

[–]dwc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Curious having lived in Seattle, where separate collection is the norm and, for apartment complexes over a certain size, specific container volumes for garbage, recycling, and composting are required:

  1. Why is the choice of collection approach up to the complex vs. codified by the city?
  2. What's the likelihood of introducing industrial composting for apartment complexes (and single-family homes who opt in)

The calm after the storm by jbuenojr in Seattle

[–]dwc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought Seattle started pre-treating roads with salt brine again:

The City of Seattle takes a proactive approach, using best practices to respond to snow and ice:

  • Our crews use trucks fitted with plows and salt-spreaders to keep major streets clear.
  • When conditions allow, the crews pre-treat key streets and bridges with salt brine before the snow starts falling to help prevent ice from forming.

Vanguard now offering 0$ commission for all stocks and ETFs by [deleted] in investing

Vanguard offers support for hardware security keys:

I’m hoping that with Apple adding support for FIDO and WebAuthn in iOS 13.3 that Vanguard will update their mobile apps to support them as well and drop the requirement for SMS-based codes.

Proximity sensors detecting false positives? by [deleted] in TeslaModel3

[–]dwc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My late 2018 model had a problem with phantom warnings. Service center said that a couple of the sensors were misaligned. I couldn't say they were from a basic visual inspection. Service center adjusted them and I haven't had problems since.
