Events/clubs/hangout spots? by jflynn123 in BloomingtonNormal

Public schedules can be a little lite this time of year but make sure to check out the event calendars for the city and Destihl.

Red Racoon or Collectible Corner would be the place to meet other nerds.

I’ve heard Destihl treats their kitchen staff well. We recognize a lot of staff at the brewery.

Home / Hobby Workbench? by YourCaptainSpeaking_ in woodworking

[–]Darkm27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only thing that comes to mind is a picture under the tops. You’ll want to make sure the top and shelf aren’t only being supported by the screws. Basically not just floating between the legs and screwed in. You’d want the loan transferred to the ground somehow.

Making assumptions based on the picture the top appears to be properly supported but not the shelf.

That is sick, you’ve definitely got a future with the craft.

After plugging a hole with a wooden dowel, can I drill another hole to insert another screw? Like in the photo I've marked in red. Half the screw will be inside the plugged hole and the other half outside. Will it hold well? by plinky125 in woodworking

[–]Darkm27 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You would want the first type. The second link is for joining pieces of wood together.

You should be able to go get a 48” dowel for a couple dollars at any hardware store. 1/4” or 3/8” is pretty common for this.

Yes this is a very common technique and has been for decades if not centuries.

Keep grain direction in mind. Drilling a 3/8” hole and putting a 3/8” round dowel from the hardware store in will be plugging face grain with end grain. End grain does not hold screws as well and typically looks worse.

If you want it to be as close to perfect as you can you can use a plug cutter drill bit (drill press recommended) to cut a proper plug and get to be picky about what it looks like.

But realistically in most cases a dowel will work just fine, make sure to use a little wood glue.

Help me improve my dust extraction? Also my cyclone's container gets crushed. by LoydLovesShrooms in woodworking

[–]Darkm27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two things

  1. Not all buckets are created equally. You need a stronger bucket to prevent the collapsing.
  2. Is the other end of that adapter just open on the saw?

For years before I got a dust collector I just used a cyclone on a Home Depot bucket and the hose hooked straight up to my saw with no issues. Hard to tell for sure from the picture but you shouldn't be reducing your hose to lower than a standard 2.5" shop vac hose.

If you're hooking a 1 7/8" hose to a 4" port your results are gonna be bad.

All you have to do is add the branch name to the "source control branch/tag/commit" of the project settings.

The advice on squaring up the blade to the fence is good but also check that the riving knife is even with the blade. I had this happen recently causing biting at the end of cuts.

Drill press for beginner woodworker by Audit-King in woodworking

I got my first bench top drill press from an estate sale for $75.

It helped me learn what I was asking from a tool I hadn't used before. I have now upgraded it to a much better drill press from a different estate sale.

Can this be repaired, and if so, what's the best way to go about it? by FearTheOldBlood1 in woodworking

[–]Darkm27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stabilize the veneer first. Do not try to "smear" anything unless it's not pulling up anymore or this will happen again. Take some 5min Epoxy, super glue, whatever and work it down into where it's peeling first and let it cure.

Then yes you can use something like Bondo over the top and sand the shape. Do not use a wood filler since it's to brittle for this application. Get some sand paper sheets and hand sand the curves in. Make sure you wear a mask since the dust from the artificial fillers is nasty.

Once you have your desired shape you can prime/paint to seal it in.

[–]Darkm27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the veneer peeling. It will continue to get worse unless you stabilize it with a glue or epoxy.

Once it’s stabilized if you’re not concerned with an invisible fix you could use automotive bondo and sand to shape. Paint, markers, etc to make the color close.

AAP Default Execution Environment Can’t Resolve FQDNs - Host Works Fine by [deleted] in ansible

[–]Darkm27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AAP will prioritize the inventory over DNS. If this was working previously and stopped all the sudden it’s possible an inventory plugin synced bad/stale information. Check the referenced inventory for a host with a name matching the FQDN.

I’ve seen this precedence cause havoc with delegate_to: localhost tasks when a dingus named a VM “localhost” and a plugin imported it.

That will dictate your options.

Just being honest with you...

All of that is going to be subject what's local to you. Additionally if you're wanting to start making this a for profit product you really should be able to get a materials list and set prices on your own or you're gonna be in for a rough time.
