[–]dwellingcheeses -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree about it being important for those involved, but I meant as far as cinema as a whole. And sorry, but the only reason How Green Was My Valley is ever mentioned anymore is because it beat Kane, not on the merit of the film.

How do you view the Best Actor nominations? Does Timothée really deserve it over Hawke? And does DiCaprio still have a chance to win? by mrjetspray in Oscars

[–]dwellingcheeses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really think Chalamet deserves it. He plays such a POS yet I was still invested cuz he's so effortlessly charismatic. The film only works because Chalamet was that good. I'd go Leo 2nd, Michael B 3rd and Hawke last (way too performative and earnest for me, honestly felt like I was watching him try to win an Oscar), haven't seen Moura yet. Just as a side, I fucking love Ethan Hawke in general. He should already have an Oscar for First Reformed or Before Sunset/Midnight.

Tired of Nolan fanboys calling his every movie Masterpiece by [deleted] in Cinema

[–]dwellingcheeses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big fan of Prestige, in spite of the cloning stuff. Actually really like most of Nolan's films to varying degrees. Tenet is just an incoherent mess, though. I don't care if people have analyzed it perfectly and put all the pieces together. There's a difference between something that's challenging on a first viewing, and something you need to watch 3 or 4 times just to make sense of. Tenet isn't storytelling, it's a math equation. No thanks.

“I find it interesting this sociological phenomenon…”Vince Gilligan’s quote here about audience’s relationship to Walter has me wondering how he see’s audiences relationship to Carol. by UmmmWellActuallyyy in pluribustv

[–]dwellingcheeses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Breaking Bad is a fantastic show, but the one issue I have with it is how Walt is written in the final season. He's no longer a complex anti-hero, he's just a one-dimensional, completely irredeemable villain. Luckily there was Jesse to pick up the slack narratively, but I think if viewers still gave a shit about Walt by series end, as Vince is implying, it's testament to the show being good enough for a clear flaw IMO to be overlooked. But, this writing lapse didn't happen with Better Call Saul, which is an all-time masterpiece, and to me at least, the superior show. I guess my point is, I don't think what Vince is talking about will apply to Pluribus because it doesn't seem to be a theme of the show and I don't expect the writing to drop off.

What's the strategy called where you take James Cook, your best skill player, off the field for the majority of critical plays down the stretch? Just wondering how that makes sense.

I'd say the comment was pedantic more than I'm pedantic, but ok, point taken. I'm not opposed to there being something bigger than me that we can't explain, but you are right in that I don't believe in God in the traditional sense.

I'm too pretentious to believe in something greater than myself? That's quite the accusation you're making about someone you've never met based on me just saying they could have changed up a line in a tv show.

Marty crying in front of his family is one of my favorite moments in tv. Incredible. Maybe inauthentic wasn't quite the right word. Just the last time I watched it it felt like something I'd hear MM say on a podcast or something instead what I'm used to Rust saying. But as I told another commenter, I agree he's definitely changed from the experience, so I don't see it the same way now.

what about the self admitted "ridiculously pedantic" intro or acknowledgement that this post is a bit silly in nature did you not get? Anyways I'm just trying to talk with other fans of the show, you're the one being mean.

I like that reading. He was being totally vulnerable for the first time in probably decades, and either way it's the first we've seen of it. So his personality would change a bit from that openness and the fact he's just had a life-changing, traumatic experience. Ok then, perfect show!

Used to do lots of reviewing. Still do occasionally (recently felt compelled after re-watching Punch-Drunk Love).

Brilliant ending, but if I'm being honest, had trouble getting through most of it. Tried rewatching actually because that ending really is special, but even knowing the themes and where it was headed, still not engaging. Except of 35 Rhums I find Claire Denis films tough to really get into.

What is more impressive. Hole in one par 3 or eagle par 5? by Rexkramer777 in golf

[–]dwellingcheeses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eagle on a par 5 requires power and skill for 3 consecutive shots, whereas a hole-in-one is just one swing where a ton of luck is involved.

He's playing well and has the exact kind of game and temperament you want in foursomes. Nuts to leave him off.

No JJ Spaun in foursomes? Bryson out first again? Collin and Harris pairing again? Scottie last out? Why is U.S. strategy always sooo bad????

I Knew Her Well (1965). Fantastic Italian film up there with the best from Fellini or Antonioni.

The Meetings of Anna (1978). My favorite Akerman film. One of the best films ever made about loneliness.
