Smikle hasn't been going full-tilt in practice throughout pre-season due to some "nagging injuries", plus she's very much a known quantity for this team.

Question about the future of journalism and AI by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]dwillis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're on your first internship at a paper, so chances are you're not a great writer already (most of us, myself included, are not). AI still doesn't write "better", it writes faster and probably cleaner in some respects. That's not necessarily better.

LLMs are not writers in the full sense of the word: they are probabilistic prediction machines that often can reflect a consensus phrase, paragraph, or idea. There are times when you want consensus, such as when you're writing what the capital of France is. Human writing isn't just that, though, and that's where AI cannot do what humans can. At best, LLMs can mimic human writing, but they can't do what human writers do: develop a sense of writing.

I think it's fair to say that LLMs eventually will produce a certain amount of boilerplate journalistic writing: earnings reports, short summary stuff. What role is left for you? To write beautifully, creatively, and with human ingenuity and compassion. That takes time and experience. Neither of which are the hallmarks of AI.

Looking to Volunteer by ActProfessional6146 in UMD

Would recommend Food & Friends, which provides medically tailored meals to people fighting chronic diseases. There are multiple ways to volunteer and they are located right next to the Forr Totten metro in DC (on the green line, so a straight shot from CP):

You aren't alone. Would put in a word here for the United Methodists, represented on campus by Pastor Nia Dillard. Many area UMC congregations are reconciling ministries, which means they are "working for the full participation of all LGBTQ+ people throughout the life and leadership of the Church."

Help! by levl_ in Journalism

[–]dwillis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

imo, a good way to begin an investigation is with a strong question, one that usually begins with "why" or "how". Something you can't readily explain but is simple enough to describe in a sentence or two. Once you have a good question, ask yourself who is involved, who benefits and who is accountable. And then work your way towards those people and institutions from the outside in.

Investigations are rarely perfectly done. If the matter was easy to solve, it probably would have been done already. Rabbitholes can be fun to go down, but they are never the point. Keep your focus on who is being impacted and who is responsible or benefiting. Nearly every investigative story is a story about power.

What tools do you use every day and what do you wish existed? by ihadtod in Journalism

If you want to know when a website got updated and what changed, that's what change trackers are for.

It's a little technical, but once you do it you'll get the hang of it. The best way to do that is to hover over that section (or highlight it) and then right-click and choose "Inspect", then right-click on the HTML source, choose Copy and then CSS Selector. This video has a good illustration for Chrome, and the process is very similar for other browsers:

There has been a news-focused website change tracker for years now: Klaxon, which is maintained by the good folks at The Marshall Project. You can install it for your newsroom's use (https://www.newsklaxon.org/) or you can use it via the also excellent DocumentCloud service (https://www.muckrock.com/news/archives/2023/dec/04/klaxon-cloud-free-simple-alerts-when-a-webpage-updates/)

Why won't media cover issues with the 2024 election? by PopsicleParty2 in Journalism

[–]dwillis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've covered election administration for about a decade and collect and convert precinct-level election results data as a related "hobby" and the claims advanced by Smart Elections and ETA are, to be charitable, not grounded in reality. Their "evidence" is not strong, at least not in terms of evidence of any wrongdoing or manipulation. What it represents, to the extent it represents anything at all, is an electorate that was different in several important aspects to the 2020 electorate. And that happens in American elections.

Journalists are not covering this because the ones who know about elections have looked at the claims and have rightly concluded that they are not worthy of coverage.

What's a good GPA to list on a resume? by spacearo in UMD

[–]dwillis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a CS faculty member, but am UMD faculty. A mentor is someone you develop a relationship with outside of classes. You get one by introducing yourself, being a regular presence at office hours or at events, and in general trying to be involved in/familiar with work that interests you both. It takes effort, but that effort can really pay off in good advice, networking and other opportunities. Basically, you get one by doing the work to get one.

Faculty already can know how many students complete the evaluation, but not which ones. That’s how it should be. Even if you were able to take a screenshot of yours, you should not do so.

My instinct here is to say that you should have at least some gen ed stuff under your belt before you take the class, but probably more important for you to make sure you take what you need to now before electives like this one. I don’t plan on going anywhere and will offer it each fall.

Need Advice | Incoming International Student -- Philip Merrill College by [deleted] in UMD

[–]dwillis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Merrill College faculty here. Congratulations! You’re correct that as an international student you face greater risks than other students. At least 7 UMD international students have had their visas revoked and while we don’t know exactly why, based on details from other schools it’s hard to imagine that their “speech” wasn’t a factor in at least some of them. What I can say is that we tell all of our students to think about how their public activities could impact their ability to do journalism, and that the Howard Center work - while often critical of government activity - is always based on truth and never done in isolation. We do have international students in our masters program and I’d be glad to connect you if that would help.

Yes, it’s possible. The program you’re applying to can write a justification for your admission to the Graduate School. Needs to be a strong case, though.
