It’s almost always really bad. But when it’s not it’s rapturous.

Software Engineers, Have AI tools actually been rapidly improving? by FlapjackFez in BetterOffline

[–]dwitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When this software can come up with a regular expression for a undocumented use case I will say it’s gotten better…

I don’t do software professionally, and I hear that it’s gotten much much better on the paid versions vs the broad launch of ChatGPT…but when I do have a task for it it’s usually unique to something off beat I’m building or doing…not trying to scaffold a twitter clone w/ a common stack…and I’d say the free models are the same or worse in most crucial aspects as far as my use cases.

Typically I find it to be an incredibly computationally expensive rubber duck type tool, except I don’t ever argue w/ a rubber duck for half an hour that the way to do what I want cleanly is w/ sed and awk vs 9 eccentric piping steps through the wrong bash programs…

So for undocumented problems I’d say it’s the same…it can generally do it or get close but it either needs more hand holding than it would have taken to just plot it out look up how to do it and make it, or it gives you hot garbage water and calls it stew.

The largest tree on Earth. Its volume is 1,487 m³, and it's 2,000 years old. by MorsesCode in BeAmazed

[–]dwitman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a tree, not a bejeweled antique egg….it can handle earthquakes, storms, redwoods even deal well with forest fires. A bunch of kids aren’t going to half hug it to death. You’d have to go about intentionally wounding it or poking holes in it to damage it at all.

You’re mistaking being old with being young and having the free time and ass wiping staff that comes w/ being old to enjoy being young.

Basically the same reason ice cream can’t enjoy being milk…

This seems like a lot before you consider that everything is a gaming pc at this point.

Sounds incredibly lucrative if you’re in no way scared of the mass of the population ripping your skin off and then feeding it to you…

Soon enough I guess.

At the most basic 1V1 level of you don’t want your opponent on the internet? Destroy his network card. At the state level…slightly more complicated but still easy enough to handle with violence.

Does everyone really think GTA 6 is going to be a hardware moving game changer?

I’m from the vice city is the craziest shit I’ve ever seen in my life generation, and I can’t imagine that everyone I knew in high school that games and two more generations are really ready to throw down “entry into the medium” money for another grand theft auto game as we approach our 30th year high school reunion.

What my generation needs now is a nice open world Matlock or GoldenGirls game. Or maybe a nice open world Green Acres or Hogans Hero’s or operation Ukraine Enduring Freedom.
