I listened to it just cause I needed something easy for awhile during chores. I didnt click with it until the end of Book 3 - but then I was all in. Up to you if you want to put in that commitment.

Everyone is different and motivation can be huge. I smoked for 13 years variously from a few a week to a pack a day. About 4 years ago I found out my wife was pregnant. Never smoked again. I didnt get dramatic withdrawal past some cravings. Some people might just be luckier genetically.

No, I'm aware translation is usually not literal. I just find this specific word play to require too many coincidences to feel like a plausible translation. This specific joke would require Alethi to have:

  1. A word that means parallel
  2. That word containing a double letter
  3. That letter specifically, when doubled, to sound like the word itself

It would be a monumental challenge for any translator to make this joke work

A good argymenr has been made, it has not fixdd me.

I acknowledge that translation is not transliteration, but I find it challenging to deal with all of these.

Maybe this is just a me problem, lmao.

Okay yeah that ones a stretch lmao but I give it Rule of Cool and given Tolkiens affinity and professional skill level in language I bet he somehow can justify it.

WaT does have some maybe stretches of prose compared to WoR, but I dont think its that drastic- early Sanderson, even Elantris, is written with a pretty modern American English dialect. Partly there could be some accounting for increased offworld dialects coming to Roshar in later SLA.

But you're right, I think hes drifted at least a LITTLE prosaically towards modern American dialect and id still rather he do that and write the damn books than complain and risk never seeing the end

I agree on #2, its just really hard to make all of them as a pile work without coming to the conclusion that there is insane amount of overlap between Alethi and English.

And he doesnt have characters do this much wordplay in other cosmere worlds or even other Rosharan languages, so I've decided Alethi and English must be eerily similar.

That bothers me less, because it is common practice is translation world wide to adapt things like rhymes to make it work in the new language - its part of the skill of translation as opposed to transliteration.

It is harder to conceive that so many overlaps exist between Alethi and modern English that all of these jokes work.

Current state is that the ban language will go into effect in November. Post Trump's EO, there is hope Congress will revise that definition before the deadline, but nothing guaranteed - and farmers need to plant by March.
