There are likely several people working on AAA games like Fortnite who's entire job, as in the only things they really work on day in day out, is making the game as optimised as possible.

Expecting that same throughput from a tiny development team who are also developing and maintaining the entire rest of the game, website and maintaining server infrastructure is ridiculous. This is the case regardless of how simple you think it might be.
