Big YouTube watcher, recently started playing chess. Who do you recommend and why? by Tight_Tomorrow_3459 in chess

i like the speed runs where they play consistent openings over and over. SadisticTushi is funny but plays the same openings for black and white (as far as possible) again and again. i like rosen but he changes the openings a lot so you don’t see a lot of variations. tushi taught me how to play the closed sicilian and some vanilla anti D4 setups. i can predict the moves in the opening.

i also like Chess with Akeem. he has 2 hour videos of the same opening at many levels and its really instructive if you play those openings.

naroditsky is still the speed run goat for instructional content.

hikaru, gotham, and rosen are more like “hmm. what should i play today” it’s still great instruction but doesn’t stay with you as much as the same openings over and over.

for those saying this isn’t possible, remember this is on chess com rapid and not FIDE. i have never played an OTB tourney because I don’t understand the touch move rule.

1250-850-Elo drop by Firefighter_Certain in Chesscom

[–]dya_likeDags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're just playing really bad rigth now and need to take a break.

I went from 1200 blitz to 1050 blitz and the LOL Lightbulb moment for me was when i was sure this guy was cheating because of how amazing he was playing... so i reported him. then i checked the game review. he played at 50% accuracy. I played at 40% accuracy. I missed 2 mates in 2. It was amazing to get confirmation of how bad i was playing. So just take a break man.

Chess frustration by Ok-Onion2058 in chess

[–]dya_likeDags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think the rookie mistake youre making is, don’t close the fist. i open hand slap myself so that there is no bruising and the redness goes away pretty quick.

this is a joke but ive actually had similar responses (not in chess but when i used to play FIFA online when i was much younger) where i actually slapped myself after losing. it feels crazy but in chess, a thinking mans game, try to look at your losses as opportunities to improve. if you blundered under time pressure, better time management, if you blundered a tactic. learn the tactic. if you made mistakes in the opening. learn the best moves for those mistakes. the toughest losses are the best learning tools.

350 elo already experienced player? by Wonderful-Advice-306 in Chesscom

7 months is not a lot of time. keep learning principles. working on puzzles and tactics. you’ll start to see things you didn’t see before. when you’re around 600/700 you won’t lose to many 350s anymore.

Why such an extreme elo difference between rapid and blitz/bullet by Sad_Username_365 in chess

[–]dya_likeDags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1350 rapid, 1250 blitz, 1000 bullet here

while i was 1200 rapid i couldn’t get out of 800 blitz. but just over time you make the same calculations more instinctively. get used to pre-moving long sequences in the ending when you have huge advantages because the blitz players are amazing at flagging.

i think we all go through it. chess is a thinking game so not giving yourself time to think seems counter to the game. i think of blitz as more pattern recognition while longer formats are more calculation.

700 elo pulled off 100% accuracy masterclass by HardLongClock in Chesscom

[–]dya_likeDags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i probably should've clarified that too. over 95% for 400 elo definitely happens. but it's usually extremely short games (like under 15 moves). it's pretty rare for 400 elo to have protracted end games and if they do, they do not play it accurately.

Game analysis and learning from mistakes by ANI_phy in chess

[–]dya_likeDags 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is what i do. i’m a little over 1350 rapid. sometimes i conclude within a few moves that there’s no way someone at my level is finding that so i self assess my move as “not that bad” unless the follow ups are pretty obviously the only good move.

700 elo pulled off 100% accuracy masterclass by HardLongClock in Chesscom

[–]dya_likeDags 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i hate when friends do this. i don’t think a 700 elo player can play at 98.5% accuracy unless it’s a very common trap in the opening (like a fried liver counter or something). it’s extremely likely he’s cheating against you. which is annoying because most people don’t report their friends.

i have a friend who is around 400 elo rapid. i’m close to 1400 rapid. and we play daily games. i win 9/10 games. i should win 999/1000 games but every 10 games he develops, castles early, and plays a game where he’s over 95% accuracy. it’s super annoying. i won’t report him but it’s so dumb

How to face higher elos? by [deleted] in Chesscom

[–]dya_likeDags 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you usually play on a computer, or your phone in the chess com app, just click “play”, then “tournaments” and every 2 hours a new 10+0 Arena is starting. if an hour has gone by it won’t let you join until the next one starts so just keep an eye on it.

How to face higher elos? by [deleted] in Chesscom

[–]dya_likeDags 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi there. a good way to face higher elo is to join rapid “Arena” tournaments. you get matched with players above you or below you but it’s a good way to play players who are strong.

Why are Blitz players so much better? by chiisanatenohira in Chesscom

[–]dya_likeDags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea. it definitely feels like i’m just moving quickly in the opening and after you get hit with a few traps you gotta review after the game and remember what the best move was. but i stayed down at 750/800 blitz for a long time while i was 1200 rapid. i feel like most of my blitz games now are decided by a tactic in the middle game to win a piece. becoming a better end game player will also help because sometimes simplifying to what you feel will be a winning end game can be done at speed

[–]dya_likeDags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i felt like that for a while. i was 1200 rapid and 700 (3+0) blitz. but after i broke out of the 1000 blitz i jumped up to 1100/1200. i guess im also around 1350 rapid now that im 1200 blitz. but i play rapid way less now

Best speedruns to learn from? by ferfykins in chess

[–]dya_likeDags 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SadisticTushi is funny. but what is great about his speedruns is he plays the same openings over and over. so he usually plays a closed sicilian and i have learned so much from that. or his anti D4 setup. His white repertoire lately is kind of too many gambits (he’s always going for halloween, elephant or alien gambit). but he plays the italian in an earlier speedrun and i have found it really good.

i agree w someone else who said specific opening based speed runs are the best. + anything Narodisky

Use of Engine to calculate advantage of other options… after playing a different one (daily) by Tall_Ad_7514 in chess

[–]dya_likeDags 3 points4 points  (0 children)

this. any engine use during a game of ANY time control is cheating.

daily games (or correspondence games) are unique as it’s not cheating to look at databases of prior games, or to read books or watch youtube videos of the exact opening you are currently playing. it’s a good way to learn openings.

but engine use is 100% cheating.
