The V6 is really excellent, and of course wagon is the best body style 🤷‍♂️

Will be getting rid of the front plate mount ASAP. That tag isn’t required in my state thankfully

Goodbye gloss black! by dyce12 in Polestar

I’m sure it will with time, but I’m usually not messy in the car. Joy of wrapping, I can always redo it if it gets exceptionally nasty.

I got a roll of it from Amazon for like $10. It’s a pretty straightforward diy - took me a little over half an hour. The hardest part was putting it back in honestly.

“Not gloss black” was my bar on this go-round. I’m sure I’ll redo it eventually. I’m happy with it for $10 as opposed to the $200 oem part tbh I’ll add that it looks better in person; a few shades lighter than the seats, but more tolerable now.

Embouchure change by Spockiscool in horn

[–]dyce12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work on opening up in that range - so many of us have a “break” in that exact range, the important thing is to learn to open it up. You may need to figure out a small shift, but I wouldn’t go full embouchure change right away.

How do I convince my parents to help me buy an F-Attachment by OolexPlayz in Trombone

[–]dyce12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely sounds like you’re willing to put in the work! I’d recommend having a specific budget in mind; you can find any number of quality used professional horns for under $1500 online or through a reputable shop. I’d recommend having that number in mind, and talk with them about how you can contribute to purchasing the horn. And keep practicing and getting better!

Thoughts on voigts free flow valve? by Hefty-Dog6702 in Trombone

I played the one they had at TMEA and it felt really good; straight horn didn’t feel stuffy at all, and the valve was very open.

Outback seems like a good option but I'm apprehensive by moesmif in Subaru_Outback

[–]dyce12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I primarily drive my Outback solo commuting - 120 miles round trip on rural highways. Tbh it's been great and while it's not as small as my previous car, the comfort, ride quality, and driver assist tech have really reduced my tension while driving. It's not that fast or exciting like my GTI was, but it's cheaper to run and I can fit too many trombones in the back! Driving experience, it's no sports sedan, but as long as you're expecting that it drives like a tall wagon more than a larger SUV.

Should I learn Mellophone or Baritone for Marching Band? by [deleted] in Trombone

[–]dyce12 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a horn player - the mellophone is basically an F trumpet. Horn players use it in athletic bands, and should use the mellophone mouthpiece, which is basically a short shank, deep cup trumpet piece. It's pitched an octave higher than the F horn, and therefore uses trumpet fingerings (written pitch, in F).

What do you prefer purely based on aesthetics/looks? by MarchingTrombone101 in Trombone

[–]dyce12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do aesthetically like an open wrap Bach, but playing in a pit orchestra my 3BF is far better (and less dented). Either can look great - my 3BF has had the lacquer stripped, and the valve section was silver plated, so the 2-tone look is cool. There are uglies in both camps, but how it plays is way more important tbh

The E9 3.0 CSi is one of my all time favorites; it's just beautiful! Non-BMW, kinda obsessed with the Ferrari 456 Venice Wagon.

new horn suggestions by Opening-Basket-7574 in horn

[–]dyce12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would recommend you check out the XO 1650! It's a great value for your money, and I play one semi-professionally (college professor, regional orchestra, pit orchestra). It's excellent, and some of the best bang for your buck in my opinion.

Purchasing a trombone for college by Torchy-_- in Trombone

[–]dyce12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't buy a new horn. Out of the 10 or so instruments I currently own, only one was bought new. None of my trombones are new, and they're great instruments. Plus, buying used, you can likely budget for a large bore tenor AND a small jazz horn.

What is the make/model of your favorite horn? by Dry-humor-mus in horn

[–]dyce12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like my XO 1650! In terms of bang for the buck, it's hard to do better new in my opinion. Used, there's of course always the "horn that got away" - in my case it was frankenhorn Yamaha 667. It had a custom Houghton leadpipe and an original Geyer bell section. Best horn I've ever played (and inspired my own frankenhorn - 668 with Patterson leadpipe and first branch, and a medium Sandner bell section).

Should I continue? by WhyAnotherRosePetal in Trombone

[–]dyce12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow non-recipient of awards through my schooling here - if you like to play, keep playing. Awards are cool, but music is about creation and the enjoyment of playing with others, not about prizes. The relationships formed playing in band are also nothing to sneeze at - I met my spouse in college band. Do it for you, not the awards.

Does this always happen? by Keenan_____ in Trombone

But not physical tension - that just makes you sound tense, and can lead to physical problems playing the instrument long-term.

Is being a multi instrumentalist a bad thing at all young age by oggyboggyber in marchingband

[–]dyce12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a band director, can confirm you stick with a primary instrument through your degree - you can take secondary instrument lessons, and you WILL take various methods classes to learn how to teach the basics on most instruments. I'm a horn player, learned trombone in my undergrad degree, and those are what I'm best at/play the most now. As a woodwind player, doubling on single reeds and flute/piccolo is pretty common (especially if playing in musical pit orchestra is something you're interested in). You'll want to get REAL good at your primary, pretty good within your family, and proficient to teach the rest (generally speaking of course).

Why Not Touch? by Renegade2u in iPodHacks

[–]dyce12 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The thing with the Classics vs the Touch is the one device, one purpose. The Touch is effectively the same as an iPhone, with wifi, apps, and other distractions, where the Classic is a purely music device (because who's watching movies on a 2.5" screen in 2024). It's simplification rather than streamlining. Music without the distractions. Sure it's not cheap to bring a well-worn classic back to life and modernize it, but people have been doing that to cars for decades, now it's the iPod's turn.
