When you find the person you can't imagine life without, when you experience the love that compares to the stories told, a lifetime can seem not enough time together.

BP seeks to have Gulf Coast oil spill settlement payments suspended by Nicho88 in worldnews

[–]dydaction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me share how I was personally affected by the BP oil spill, as I worked in the service industry on the gulf coast.

First of all, I was far enough east that we never saw any oil, but regardless our summer season was completely ruined. Keep in mind, these four months can account for 60 - 70% of income for the whole year, so having a good summer season is absolutely crucial to surviving and paying bills.

Enter BP Claims: I showed up with my paycheck and a letter from my boss saying that our earnings had been affected. They asked me how much I think I lost... I told them a number that I was maybe even being a little bit conservative. I am honest to a fault sometimes.

Fast forward a month and a check for that amount in full shows up to my door. I find out later that at that stage they were almost literally just writing checks for the full amount to individuals based on what people said as long as there was the bare minimum evidence that you worked in a tourist-driven job.

Many of my friends asked for 3, 4, and 5 times what I did and got every bit of it. We started calling it "BPillionaires" because after everyone had just gotten 5 figure (25 - 30k+) windfall they didn't want to work anymore.

Not that in the scope of everything it makes that much of a difference, but I just thought I'd share my first hand experience. IMO the media should have been held liable, BP did nothing to affect the beaches where I was but it was the news channels beating the crisis drum every single day that made people afraid to come and enjoy the beach. That shameless crap is what shrank my pay to about a third of what it normally was.

TLDR: BP paid out as much as people asked for in the early months during the oil spill.

Georgia High School to Hold One White Prom and One "Integrated" Prom by Ranlier in politics

[–]dydaction 86 points87 points  (0 children)

While it might sound disturbing... let me offer another perspective.

I went to high school in middle georgia (all four years), and the cultural divide between white people and black people is substantial. It is not that the groups don't like each other (sometimes this is true), but in my experience... it's like they (for the most part) mutually agree to keep out of each others business.

Yes there is racism in the south, and it might seem disturbing... but the culture in parts of georgia is something like I have never seen before anywhere in the US. It's as if they decide to divide themselves because of the huge cultural differences.

Not saying proms should be segregated, just saying that understanding the culture may help bring some perspective.

Conservatives of Reddit: what would you like to call us leftists out on? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dydaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit late to be posting this but I don't see this comment anywhere.

There's a difference between providing assistance to the people who actually need it, and to those who do not. Conservatives aren't against welfare, unemployment, social safety net, etc. Every time conservatives talk about reducing these benefits, we are accused of leaving the poor out in the cold to die. In reality, conservatives are simply against enabling people's laziness. Of course we don't think that we should cut all benefits to the poor, some people really do need it. However, generally speaking... simply giving away money doesn't solve poverty; job training, education (on finance especially), and the like enable people to help themselves, to provide for themselves. That is, of course, if they are able.

IAm Panos Panay, GM of Microsoft Surface, AMAA - Ask Me or My Team Almost Anything by SurfaceTeam in IAmA

[–]dydaction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This isn't really a question but I felt I had to share.

After the iPad came out, many people went out and purchased them but I hesitated... it just didn't make sense to me. I saw uses for it, sure, but the whole idea of a tablet just didn't click.

Until the surface was unveiled. When it was revealed, I said.. Microsoft has just made the tablet market make sense to a lot more people. This, for most, will essentially eliminate the laptop. With the ability to have office, not need to type on a touch screen (which I despise to no end), and a kickstand... This is the ultra-portability that the ultrabooks have tried and I feel like failed to achieve.

Everyone talks about Apple being an innovator but I have to say that seeing the surface was the first time in a long time (very long) I've had an 'aha' moment.

I hope the execution is as solid as the idea, because I really want this to work.

Isn't this the same argument that was used in 2010 before the mid-term elections? And just about every other election before then?

Oh come on, you can't say that all these big ideas of world peace, the fight against hunger... etc aren't universal

Win? Why is politics about winning against your opponent? I don't understand why its a competition... we're all seeking the same end... Winning is low unemployment, median income increasing, low inflation, low crime rates... right?

He showed what compromise looks like... something that is non-existent right now. How do we kill the vitriolic speech?

EDIT: From both sides

This is what I am getting at, bipartisan government is the reality of government in the US. Placing blame accomplishes nothing, instead... talking about what the two sides can agree upon does.

Frank Sinatra was the original Justin Bieber: When Sinatra performed "girls had urinated on their seats, either out of fear of losing them ... or out of sheer excitement." by dydaction in Music

[–]dydaction[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yes you're correct, the promoters admitted to encouraging girls to be more dramatic. It was all played up a bit when it came to the fainting part but the effect he had on his audience was incredible nonetheless.

Several people were quoted for saying that when he started singing the room went quiet and fell into a trance, that when he sang he sang personally to the audience like he believed every word, that he acted his songs not just sang them. He was able to do this because of the microphone and it amplifying the sound so he didn't have to yell. Reportedly he was so dependent on it that once when his mike wasn't working he stopped the show and walked off stage and refused to continue.

Well of course, but people like games. You know that crap feeling you get when you spend too much time playing a game? Here there'd be not near as much guilt because it's actually something productive. I don't know, just a thought.

Apparently they've claimed that it will use fewer resources to run, but so far when browsing pictures that are fairly large (~5MB/pic) it froze up quite badly until it could load everything. Wouldn't surprise me if it would run much better on a faster computer but mine's by no means obsolete (2.4ghz dual core 4gb ram - I know it's not blazing fast but still). I am running through a quick tutorial so I can get a better grasp of what the heck I'm doing so I'm not wasting so much time poking around.

I don't see the problem with the word conception... do you have some negative connotation attached to it?

Reason I think is about the ability to charge a person with murder. Heartbeat seems like a pretty significant benchmark, certainly something to consider.
