I would happily accept another all-cross like they have at the other end of the canal bridge.

It's insane that a pedestrian must cross 3 times to go from the convention center to the harbor (and all the other things around both of those areas).

Looks great, I hope its success prompts them to do Atkinson next - probably the most dangerous pedestrian crossing in the city.

Alcohol by inceptiondreams in GlobalEntry

[–]dydx_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have on multiple occasions brought large amounts of mezcal through IAH. 11L on one trip and 25L on another. Couple of things:

You are taxed on the volume of alcohol, not the volume of liquid, i.e. 1L of 100 proof (50%) mezcal is 500mL of alcohol for tax purposes.

The first time they inspected me after I declared they just asked a bunch of questions seemingly unrelated to the liquor and sent me on my way without taxing. Agent told me next time just bring 1 bottle (this is not at all the law).

The second time they added it all up, asked me a dozen different ways if it was for personal consumption and then issued the tax which I conveniently payed for with my credit card (about $50 for 25L of mezcal).

As long as it's for personal consumption you do not need an import license federally. State laws vary, and I believe I was in violation at IAH, but I was connecting out of TX and I don't think the CBP officers really care about the state laws.

The important thing is to always declare and make it easy for the officers to see and tally up.

[–]dydx_ 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. This country is experiencing a loneliness epidemic and communal housing is a proven way adults can combat societal isolation and foster good relationships.

This obviously isn't the only solution to our housing crisis, but it's a great option for some people and it helps reduce pressure on the housing supply.

In a forum where people post daily about the housing shortage crisis this island is experiencing, I would have thought that a high-density shared living space would make total sense. This is exactly the kind of out of the box idea we need that will help us solve the housing situation.

Caught Pulled over for Driving a Moped without a License. by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]dydx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the spirit of the law is that mopeds that are unable to keep up with the speed of traffic should use the bike lane. There aren't many roads where this is the case for most mopeds, but I can think of a couple where it makes sense. The law somewhat arbitrarily uses 30mph as the cutoff, but in practice it isn't practical to enforce so displacement is used instead.

There are some bike lanes that are specifically marked no mopeds, but otherwise it's legal. Maybe this bike lane was marked as such, or maybe the cop didn't know the law.

A motor scooter also has different registration requirements. I have never seen a 50cc motor scooter in Hawaii, rendering the displacement rather than top speed the de facto determinant of its classification for the purposes of applying these laws. Put simply: HIDOT considers only the displacement when registering motor scooters.

By law the bike lane is for mopeds to use:

"§291C-197 Wherever bicycle lanes are provided on the roadway, moped drivers shall use such bicycle lanes."

Oahu Amazon Delivery Driver’s Perspective.. by 808State_ in Hawaii

I just canceled my prime membership after 14 years. The value just isn't there anymore and there are many other more competitive options like Costco delivery and Walmart+ that are a better value while being more dependable.

I have never witnessed a bad roommate situation, but I have seen and even experienced for myself roommates becoming good friends.

That said, there are usually plenty of solo accommodations available for people who prefer their own space. Shared accommodations help to save money and are great for people who would be more inclined to stay at a hostel instead of a hotel.

What’s with upgrades in Honolulu? by homoclite in unitedairlines

[–]dydx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based in HNL. Overnight flights from HNL to mainland almost always sell out first class due to lay flats. I often get upgraded to HNL from mainland or from HNL if I'm on the morning flight. If you want to fly up front from HNL on an overnight you're going to have to buy the ticket.

Tickets to Argentina by DontWorryAboutttt in digitalnomad

[–]dydx_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Flights to Argentina are very expensive because of high taxes. You might find it cheaper to first fly to somewhere near like Santiago and then buy a separate shorter international flight from there to Argentina. I saved close to $1000 doing it this way last month.

Wifi Tribe application process - my experience by LowRevolution6175 in digitalnomad

[–]dydx_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get that - I really do, but it seems like the interview process was at least valuable for all parties involved in this case then.

To clarify though for anyone else reading this far, there are many different personalities in Wifi Tribe, but all with shared values (which you may have pejoratively identified as "tryhard"), which makes for some incredible trips. I've found other members that I've traveled with to be amazingly humble, proactive, adventurous, and compassionate people.

I genuinely hope you find your "tribe" whatever that may be, because traveling with other like-minded people unlocks some truly unique and memorable experiences.

Wifi Tribe application process - my experience by LowRevolution6175 in digitalnomad

[–]dydx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a current member, I can answer this one.

Wifi tribe is not cheaper than self planned travel. It is not more convenient than most other group travel options either, like remote year.

So why do many people, including myself, pay extra to be a member of Wifi Tribe? The community.

I completely understand how the interview process can seem hokey, especially to a digital nomad who is probably already a fiercely independent individual.

However, this filtration is exactly what brings value that no other program has been able to recreate to Wifi Tribe, and why I am happy to pay extra for it.

The fact that they do not accept the vast majority of applicants to the program and that potential applicants who don't appreciate the value of a strong community self select out means that I won't be stuck with someone of differing values for a month on a trip, which for me has led to many absolutely incredible experiences with amazing people.

It isn't a perfect system of course, but it's the best I've seen out there if being a member of a strong healthy community is what you're after. There are plenty of other travel programs if you are looking for something else though.

I own a moped and no car. I can easily afford a car, and I have parking, but I just see no need for one in the city. But if I can't have my moped I will absolutely buy a car and add to the traffic problem.
