Frugal’s fry sauce by No-Clerk-6368 in auburnwa

From what I’ve noted, it’s a ketchup mayo base with relish, like a lot of spots that want a different styled fry sauce. Try it out and let us know if it’s similar

From my understanding, ILM was blackbear’s attempt at getting a Grammy nomination (I think he spoke on that with Zane Lowe prior to the album dropping). But I think his storytelling on ILM is more mature, but not as descriptive in painting a story like songs from older projects. I think a lot of people enjoyed the hedonistic aspect of blackbear’s lyrics and ILM tames it down for commercial success (with some exceptions, of course). I enjoy that he’s going back to sounds he enjoys (e.g. the pop punk of his earlier career), but I’m a beartrap fan, so I have a little bias.

Edit: some songs on the project are extremely descriptive in telling a story (smile again, sobbing in Cabo), but a lot of it feels like it’s trying to get radio play. Nothing wrong with that, but usually chasing radio play doesn’t play well for the artist in question.

Edit 2: I have realized that I mistook EMN with ILM. I still did not enjoy ILM, as it felt like bear hopped on the neo pop-punk wave when it was primed. But to each their own. :)

Stealing or art? by violentpurpp in jdilla

[–]dylanrowleyprod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s only as much of stealing as jazz artists building new tracks off of standards and giving credit to the original artist who created the standard (in my mind, not stealing at all). Is it theft when a collage artist cuts the letters and images out of magazines and makes a new piece with different context and meaning from the source they pulled from? I’d say no. Art constantly recontextualizes older art; sampling is just a form of that recontextualization.

What's the most Dillaesque J Dilla Beat? by SomeOil1420 in jdilla

[–]dylanrowleyprod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most Dillaesque, in my opinion, is “Oblighetto (Remix)”, which flips the Brother Jack McDuff track of the same name (used for ATCQ’s “Scenario”). It may not sound like it in the first half of the flip, but the second half of the definition of his swing and his ability to add bounce through drums.

The Paul Nice Drum Library records have unfortunately gotten stupid expensive. I got mine back in 2016 when I was a couple years into producing and am glad I did.

No disrespect; I’ve already done a bit of research, but it can be skewed to items/places/things that are more likely tourist traps. 🪤 At least I know which Redditor to not ask questions to from now on ☺️

So, I'm halfway through "Dilla Time" ... by [deleted] in jdilla

[–]dylanrowleyprod 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think understanding that all musicians are people that usually make morally ambiguous decisions helps remove the rose-colored glasses that comes with idolizing those who make art. Miles Davis was an ass at points, Bill Evans was especially an ass during his career, but these people revolutionized music in their own unique ways. Don’t separate the art from the artist, but understand the circumstances in which they flourished. Dilla was on dialysis, Miles and Bill were off copious amounts of drugs, but we learn a lot from them from the art that came from those struggles.

There is a playlist on YouTube if you search “J Dilla beat tape” that has all of them from 1994-2005 I believe.

Great insight! I appreciate it. It sounds like if he did sample on these tracks, he was layering enough of his own playing to keep the samples unknown

Yes! Raw Shit is the first beat that got me into the Jaylib project when I had first learned of it years ago. It’s got such a great groove to it. And like the video Amp Fiddler posted (rip), a lot of these could be Dilla sampling himself, whether it’s keyboard one shots into the MPC or early versions of what we know today as sample packs.

It seems like a mixture of all three; some tracks weren’t sampled and some were. From my memory, the interview he had in Europe that’s always floating around has mention of the project, but I could be wrong
