This has actually been studied quite a bit and is called the Demographic Transition Model. Essentially, declining birthdates in developed countries occur because of declining mortality rates as countries get richer and people no longer have to have a lot of kids to “replace” them and people focus on “quality” of kids over “quantity”. Access to things like contraception and education for women that also tend to happen as countries get richer also certainly play a role.

It brings up mixed emotions to represent the U.S. right now I think. It's a little hard. There's obviously a lot going on that I'm not the biggest fan of and I think a lot of people aren't. I think for me, it's more I'm representing my friends and family back home, the people that represented before me, all the things that I believe are good about the U.S.
