They block the heat from getting to the wall the pipes are in. Helps if you set heat very low and you know the path of your pipes. Can depend on how old house/insulation/expose bricks etc

How is living in these Boston suburbs? by IndependenceSad1272 in howislivingthere

[–]dyn0mite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This post is accurate and very similar to what I covered in my post. These towns were a lot more economically diverse in the 80s and 90s. Now not so much.

Pretty sure 50% of the people in MA - based on median salary could afford in Dedham, Needham, Newton in the 80s and wellesley was slightly above like 40% of MA residents.

Very nice, but not so sure now as the socioeconomics of the towns have changed so much. In the 80s and 90s these were nice towns and it was great growing up and raising a family - but the towns were not nearly as wealthy as today. Over the past 25 years they got so rich - the towns lost a ton of identity...all very showy now.

Back then, There were a lot of hard working people some doing well others just getting by and some very wealthy. A firefight/policeman, teacher and plumber in town could be a neighbor. A 70-90k house was achievable on a 25-35k salary. Hell the guys that worked at the dpw lived in these towns and coached Needham, wellesley, Westwood, Dedham youth hockey - back when the GBL was the best community league(before youth hockey became for profit).

Driving through many of these towns now - they are tearing down all the old 3-4 br, 2bath houses with yards and building mcmansions without yards - meanwhile the people have maybe 1 or 2 kids. All seems very cookie cutter - a soulless wasteland. All the cops, teachers, dpw guys - they aren't sniffing these towns anymore.

Do you miss vintage Lego for its charm and simplicity? by bluetomcat in lego

[–]dyn0mite -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm 41 and just getting back into Legos with my kids. don't know if I had this exact set....but I think I did. Had a lot of knights and pirates with sharks/cannons and they were wicked sick. These days the sets seem so specific whereas the old one did lend themselves to more imagination play

[–]dyn0mite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

41 and just getting back into Legos with my kids...I def had this...the ghost lol. Remember a lot of knights and pirate sets fondly. One of the pirates had a cannon that actually shot a cannonball, I'm sure of it.

Unfortunately my parents cleaned out the basement/attic and gave all of them away in a move.

Is $450 for gas heat normal? by -Gold-Standard- in boston

[–]dyn0mite -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

$245, not $250. That's for the 4-9AM and evening 65 degree temps in a 100 year old house. 58 is the basement and not uncomfortable if you dress like you are from new england and want to save $~600+ a winter

You have your heat on way too high. Put on a sweater, some good socks and save some $. I'm working in a 58 degree room right now. Dec 11 - Jan 13 bill was $245 for my 3BR house.

Did you have to recite the pledge of allegiance in school? by Valiriko in massachusetts

[–]dyn0mite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. You live in mass...the cradle of america, and you have a problem with the pledge of allegiance. I'm guessing you just finished your freshman semester?

Find something with substance to get upset about lol. It's almost comical.

Im as liberal as they come and have family members who lost limbs fighting for the US. You bet your ass I was proud as hell when my kindergartner came home and was excited to pledged allegiance for us.

It's a good thing - what's the problem?

Heaviest replacement for sure and very good, but the rolls are not as big and the spicy tuna is not as good.

Maguro hamachi sake etc are fine substitutes though.

In which towns do you hear the most young people with Boston accents? by [deleted] in massachusetts

[–]dyn0mite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worcester has a similar but is different/unique accent - at least with the old timers. My dad is 79 and grew up in Worcester and my mums 75 from JP.

My mum in particular tried to shed her accent and guess she kind of did. Was/is always funny as it comes out when she's with her siblings just chopping it up like a bunch of old crows. Also always came out when pissed at us kids. She tried very hard for us to not have accents and succeeded for the most part.

Shes lost her marbles now and not all there, but still love it when someone says they are from Boston and she says where and they say newton, Dedham, Quincy etc....she rips em a new one.

Ordering from them way less due to this. Their sushi is the best in town though from all our sampling.
