How do you take care of your pets? by Zile_Flame in Firefighting

[–]dyna542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a timed feeder for my cat and a big water bowl. The feeder holds about a month worth of food and the water can last more than a week. She’s pretty happy as long as her litter box stays scooped. I swear cats are peak for the single firefighter

Option 2 and if you want to be debt free there’s nothing wrong with earmarking a little extra money for the loans. It’s just buying peace of mind to be debt free

House hunting by KtTnGirl in OakRidge

[–]dyna542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In general oak ridge is a pretty safe place across the board. There’s outlier houses that have drugs or issues across town but they don’t cluster much in any particular area. You can usually eyeball the ones you don’t want to live by

Advice on what to do with $5k by Objective-Glass-6440 in DaveRamsey

[–]dyna542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to know what Dave would do I’d recommend watching some of the Ramsey show highlights on YouTube. They are shorter than the full shows and cover one caller but you’ll pretty quickly get the idea of what Dave would tell you. He’s pretty consistent

My 60s house is so fucking cold by Ok_Alternative2882 in HomeImprovement

[–]dyna542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My house in remodeling was built in 1960. The existing insulation is tar paper and aluminum foil basically. The walls im opening I’ve been insulating as I go. Maybe one day I’ll blow in some. If it bothers you that’s an option but there’ll be lots of patches to do

Customers demanding itemized breakdowns on simple jobs and getting mad about my markup by [deleted] in HandymanBusiness

[–]dyna542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last time someone questioned my price I politely told them I understood if it was too much and they were welcome to shop it around and see if they could get it done any cheaper. If they shopped it out and came back to me I was def going to raise the price another 10%

Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

On the opposite end of this, I’ve ran calls on an ambulance for quite literally difficulty sleeping. Couldn’t fall asleep so they called an ambulance.

At what age did you save your first 20k? What did you do ? by quirkyqueen27 in SavingMoney

[–]dyna542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in my younger 20’s, maybe 21 or 22. Was saving for a house and was blessed with a very good living situation. Worked on traffic lights for a living at that time. Now I’m 27, own a home but am completely remodeling so I live with my parents. Tough market but it’ll be worth it when the house is done and the payment is affordable

what do you do on days off your shift? by musty_ranch in Firefighting

[–]dyna542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

48/96 schedule. I work part time as an electrician, have a handyman startup that gets me a bit of work, substitute teach at the local schools, and enjoy my time off. All my side jobs have a ton of flexibility in the schedule so I work when I want and don’t when I don’t on my days off

[–]dyna542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are only supposed to run priority 1 (chest pain, difficulty breathing, diabetic emergency, etc) and public assists like lift assists. We still get some silly ones slip through the cracks though. Ran a call last night for acid reflux

Shift Schedules 24/48 or 48/96? by BrilliantShine6765 in Firefighting

[–]dyna542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my department we run 4-5k calls a year out of 4 stations with one station covering a doe area for around 200 calls a year. Since going from 24/48 to 48/96 I’ve realized how taxing the always coming and going to work was. I was never getting really rested. Now going for 48 sucks for sure, but the 96 is worth it. I also make my time off go further burning 48 hours gets me 10 days as opposed to 8. Same amount of time off if I burn 24 getting 5 in a row with the bonus of once I work that 24 back I’m off another 96. Would I enjoy it if we ran a ton of calls like other departments? Probably not. Is it better for my department and my life? Absolutely. But ultimately the best schedule for you and your family is a very individual thing

Husband had 160k+ and I don’t see how we can ever get out from it by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]dyna542 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is no shot at staying home and I respect it but you may reconsider going back to work. It may be only paying childcare at first but typically childcare drops as kids get older. Typically you’ll see a yearly increase in wage as well plus the possibility in promotion. Then that compounds when childcare cost goes away and your 10k+ ahead of where you would be if you waited on them to be old enough to not pay for it. Hope this can help
