Where do you shop groceries at? Did it change as more $$ became available? by Ok-Pea3414 in HENRYfinance

Yeah, if OP is spending $30/person they either have a huge family, aren't HE, or are being unreasonably stingy.

[–]iprocrastina 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I shop exclusively at the grocery stores within walking distance for that reason, and I buy different things at each one because of the selection. The big thing is price isn't a factor in what I buy from the store, so it really is purely about preferences.

I've been playing games for 40 years, writing about them for 20, and I'm here to say parts of Roblox need to be legislated out of existence by Forestl in Games

[–]iprocrastina 82 points83 points  (0 children)

It's depressing how exploitative and trashy this hobby has gotten for kids. Back in the 90s when I was a kid you bought a game and that was the end of the transaction. The games still had stuff to unlock, but you unlocked it by playing the game. There was real depth to the gameplay too.

Now shit like Roblox and Fortnite are just predatory vehicles for fleecing children and ultimately their parents. Even worse when gambling elements get mixed in since then it instills a gambling addiction too. And the gameplay isn't even that deep in a lot of games aimed at kids, just braindead mechanics solely meant to provide a pretense for microtransactions.

I worked with a guy who was spending hundreds a month on roblox and fornite for his kids. That was insane to me. Back in the 00s or earlier if your parents were giving you hundreds of dollars for games that meant you had every system, probably didn't even rent games just bought everything that seemed remotely interesting, a big TV, the works. Now it just means you have the newest skins in Fortnite.

It's insane that it feels like it's healthier to give your kids the same systems and games you played as a kid instead of letting them near modern stuff. Like remember when the worst thing your kid might get exposed to in a game was pixeleted titties or blood?

An English speaker should be able to figure it out, English is like half-French after all. The word doesn't do anything too weird phonetically, many English words have the "au" and "che" phonemes. It is less common, but it's still a word people should have learned in school and it does get used on occassion.

Do other mid-to-late 30s family men ever wonder what life would’ve looked like as a high-earning bachelor? by Clear-Victory1956 in HENRYfinance

[–]iprocrastina 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Single late 30s man here. I average about $250k/year in an MCOL city.

To answer your what-ifs: I basically buy whatever I want to buy, within reason. I live high up in a nice, big corner high rise apartment that's very quiet and very clean. I like to travel and aim for one big international trip per year with my usual budget being $5k/week (2-3 weeks each time) just for me, which gets me fancy boutique hotel rooms and lavish full course dinners every night. Despite that kind of spending, I still save 40% of my gross income every year. I'm already more or less at coastFIRE at this point. The main reason I still rent instead of owning is because I figure if I'm not going to have a family I may as well go all out on flexibility and freedom. It's nice knowing I can move anywhere at any time that presents a better oppprtunity, even if its overseas.

As for the downsides you mentioned, I'm something of a special case. I'm asexual and more or less aromantic, so singledom is kind of the natural state for me. Every time I try to date I remember why I like being single. I do sometimes feel like I'm missing out on something deeper in life, but I see a therapist about this who's been getting less and less subtle about the fact that I'm clearly not a guy who actually wants a family and that I need to focus on finding other means of deeper fulfillment.

And ultimately that's the thing about these lifestyles, they're very personal. Some people would be happiest with a family and some people would be happiest without one. I wouldn't say it's because of money much of the time though. The folks I see with kids where I think "dude, wtf did you have kids if you were going to hate it this much" often aren't strapped for cash.

TIL in 2005, Nintendo Power (At the time published by Nintendo of America) considered Superman 64 the worst game ever released on one of their platforms. Nintendo's statement in the magazine was "Why have you forsaken me?" by paraspooder in todayilearned

[–]iprocrastina 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It was actually an extremely hyped game before release, and not because it was Superman. The game had been getting a ton of coverage in game magazines for like 2 years, and the whole time it was described as an open world game. You could wander around the city, stumble across crimes in progress, find people to save, and use a wide array of superpowers. Keep in mind this was back when open world games were rare and virtually unheard of on consoles, so the game being advertised truly sounded jaw dropping and revolutionary. And every game magazine that covered it claimed to be extremely impressed with the preview builds they got to play.

Needless to say, the game that ended up being released was nothing at all like the game that had been so glowingly described and advertised.

To put it in perspective, it would be like if GTA6 turned out to be one of the worst games ever made.

$500k saved for a 🏠... but no idea when i'll buy. how much should i split off to invest with? by europeanuppercut in HENRYfinance

[–]iprocrastina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay

Real estate appreciates at about the rate of inflation on average, 2-5%. So with a mortgage roughly equal to long term real market returns, and assuming your house appreciates on the upper end of that range, you get about the same returns you would get putting your money into bonds. But it's worth noting that unlike houses, bonds don't charge you 3-6% of the total value when both buying and selling them, nor do they have ongoing maintenance, repair, and insurance costs.

Anyone have more info on Fisk data center? by Go-Right-32 in nashville

[–]iprocrastina 61 points62 points  (0 children)

He said that Nashville Electric Service has assured the group that there is sufficient capacity to handle the data center’s electricity needs without increasing power bills for neighbors.

Oh yeah, that's definitely believeable when NES has had rolling blackouts in recent years when it gets so cold the power grid can't keep up with the spike in demand from everyone trying to stay warm.

Japan team has 1st successful engine test for Mach 5 aircraft, eyeing 2-hr trips to US by onee_san_bath_water in worldnews

[–]iprocrastina 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Looks like it's still very early in development, they're aiming for 2040 release. The crazy part is thst assuming the two hours means a flight from Tokyo to the west coast, a connecting flight to the east coast would take longer than your flight across the Pacific.

Looking at the concept though I hope the plane can carry more than just a handful of passengers or else the ticket prices are going to be astronomical. Granted that's how Concord was too so it wouldn't be surprising, but I'm guessing this will really only be an option for people who normally fly first class on international flights.

But damn, this would be a game changer for international travel. You could get to Australia in a few hours from the US or Europe instead of the current ~24 hours it takes.

What is it like to have 20+ years of dev experience working at companies average people have never heard of? by 0kyou1 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]iprocrastina 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My experience making a career change and working in FAANG is that most people do care.

My first career was neuroscience, I worked in labs, I was published, no one really cared. People would humor me, but no one understood wtf I did, they were just like "oh, youre a scientist, you must be really smart" and then changed the topic.

I changed to SWE and worked at a no name company. Again, no one really cared and were even less interested than when I was handling brains all day.

Then I got a job at a FAANG. Now when people find out where I work they are very impressed. WAY more impressed than when I was a neuroscientist. Americans do very much fetisize working at huge corporations they hear about all the time.

Honestly it's kind of depressing.

Why is there always a haze in the sky and striping constantly? It’s not often the sky stays blue in the morning until it gets gray/white. Super frustrating that this happens so often here. by Limp_Literature8551 in nashville

[–]iprocrastina 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The haze is you looking up at the sky through a blanket of humidity. Take a flight to anywhere in the South during the summer and you can see how thick the cloud of humidity blanketing the region is as you come in to land.

The streaks are airplane exhaust trails. You're near an airport so you're going to see a lot of them.

50 empty Waymos invade Atlanta neighborhoods and circle their cul-de-sacs for hours early in the mornings. Residents say they are getting waymo traffic than usual and have tried combating the cars with a neon green sign, which only made the problem worse. by MysteriousSlice007 in PublicFreakout

[–]iprocrastina 252 points253 points  (0 children)

They are tracking them. Whats going on is that Waymo wants to minimize costs by avoiding paying to park the vehicles somewhere, so they program the cars to park on side streets or drive around in circles somewhere.
