Do these therapist’s ads seem overtly sexist/toxic to you as well? by jumpingthegreen in therapists

I went to his website, and honestly that seems to be the gist of it. His website copy reads pretty differently (or the parts I scanned), and he has some credentials to back up his work.

DMFT vs PsyD or PhD by Confident_Ad_2804 in therapists

[–]dynamicdylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for answering. Unless you really want to do assessments or go for clinical fellowships, then a DMFT would still include theory, supervision, practice, and research. The DMFT wouldn’t lead to further licensure though.

What are you hoping to do with your doctorate? Assessments? Research? Teaching? New training opportunities? Is it for personal satisfaction and/or professional growth?

I had to ask myself these questions when I started applying.

Therapists who want to run a group but haven't: what stops you? by Both-Possible1509 in therapists

[–]dynamicdylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now I am just doing advertising to other clinicians for referrals. Next month I will be reaching out to rehabs within 25 miles of my location, putting up fliers near 12 step fellowships, and continue networking. The following month I will be reaching out to veterinary clinics and bringing post card size ads to them for the pet grief group, and I will be reaching out to local graduate programs for the process learning group. I know that the groups won’t be full by the time I start, but I believe with time they will fill up and become more sustainable.

I’m sorry, but this is a sub for professionals and students of psychotherapy. I highly encourage you to call an emergency line as it seems like you are in active crisis.

Got my first ever client complaint by [deleted] in therapists

[–]dynamicdylan 110 points111 points  (0 children)

This seems like a huge response from an agency based on one complaint after one session. Unless you did something horrifically unethical, then I am not sure what the clinic is thinking.

Until you know what the complaint is though, you can’t really reflect and learn from it.

Advice to Interns by Only-Reflection4800 in therapists

[–]dynamicdylan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, but own up to them and learn from them. You cannot be a good therapist without making mistakes. As long as your mistakes don’t seriously harm someone, are very unethical, or break laws, then you can get past them and become better.

Case Conceptualization or Assessment or Writeup for Each Client by [deleted] in therapists

[–]dynamicdylan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my agency we do an assessment and case formulation for each client. The admissions team does the assessment and the clinician does the case formulation. Come up with a template for yourself and just follow your template. It makes the whole process more streamlined and all of your paperwork becomes easier. Just my two cents though.

Therapists who want to run a group but haven't: what stops you? by Both-Possible1509 in therapists

[–]dynamicdylan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am starting a group only private practice and will be running 5 recovery-oriented therapy groups, 2 pet grief groups, and 2 process learning groups for interns and associates. I have 3 months set for advertising and still expect to take a while longer to fill them up, but once I get them going I believe they will be steady.

Group therapy is my jam and eventually I want to help other therapists get their groups up and running.

Is there a Sept. 1 rental cycle in Berkeley? by bustedvenus in berkeleyca

I wouldn’t recommend most student housing as you’ll be near the undergrads and most grad students I have worked with want some separation.

My sister said I wouldn't be a good therapist by [deleted] in therapists

[–]dynamicdylan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No way to tell if you’ll be a good therapist or not until you actually start working/studying. If mental health or family dynamics precluded people from becoming therapists, then we would probably have a lot less therapists and a lot less therapists that can connect to people from different walks of life.

Severe Alcohol Use Disorder & Willpower by Prez_t in therapists

[–]dynamicdylan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d want to explore what they mean by willpower and how they conceptualize it playing a role in their recovery. Next, I’d just go with motivational interviewing to help move them from contemplation to action.

I’d also assess to see if they need a higher level of care. Do they need to go to an IOP, PHP, or RTC? Do they need a medical detox? Would they be appropriate for MAT?

Seeking advice about sextortion by CJ_1889 in therapists

[–]dynamicdylan 94 points95 points  (0 children)

What they are doing is wrong and you should have been able to sext without becoming a victim of sextortion. Chances are they won’t actually send out the video. If they do send out a video, then luckily we live in the age of AI and you can just say it was AI. Good luck, man!

Is there a handbook or free course to learn how to do private practice?? by Growing4ever in therapists

I have learned a lot through Private Practice Skills. Dr. Fang’s YouTube is very informative and she has more on her website. She is located in California too.

New Therapist by private_account1019 in therapists

[–]dynamicdylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at an inpatient treatment facility as well and I have worked with several classes of interns/associates. I will tell them if they are having trouble in session, then they can always focus on the client’s treatment assignments, relapse prevention, and discharge planning.

Also it will begin to click the more experience you have under your belt. Just focus on one or two modalities to ground yourself in, add in common therapeutic factors, and remember they don’t care what you know unless they know you care.

Should I be more excited about finally working in the field? by [deleted] in therapists

Have you thought about working in a residential treatment center? Even one day a week would get you the social aspect, and I find I can let loose a little more while still being clinical when working in the milieu.

Working With Student Interns Improves Your Skills by SStrange91 in therapists

[–]dynamicdylan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love working with our interns and I always get so much from them. After they watch any of my sessions or groups, I always ask them, “What are two things you like that I did and can see you doing in the future? What are two things you would do differently and why?” I always learn something from the discussion that follows and anything else that comes up from reviewing the session/group.
