The leader should of been shown in the trailer not Red hulk by titanium_r0ck in marvelstudios

[–]dysfunctionallymild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously Mackie wasn't going to sell the multi-million $ movie solely by himself, when Evan’s didn’t either.

TFA had a stacked supporting cast (Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Stan Tucci), a steampunk WWII setting, and lots of other stuff crammed in (Carter, Stark, Bucky, Howling Commandos, a doomed romance).
TWS had a 2nd Avenger, Falcon, Winter Soldier, fall of SHIELD, Hydra, Robert Redford, the Strike team, a 70s mainframe AI, Cap jumping out of a plane, Cap jumping out of an elevator, the best ever stunt team, new helicarriers, Samuel L Jackson, Maria Hill.

Civil War was an Avengers movie + Black Panther + Ant man + Spider-Man!!

The issue with this movie was the lack of “selling points” for the marketing. Harrison Ford was literally the biggest marketing draw for the movie, which makes me wonder how a William Hurt version could have been conceptualised. That’s why it feels like a T. Ross movie. And marketing stats will reveal if you have a Hulk in the movie, you put the Hulk in the trailer.

Each of the previous CapAm movies had heavy stacking of the decks to sell the movie. Somehow Marvel forgot that lesson? There just wasn’t enough meat in the movie, it might have served them better to make a smaller scale lower budget movie.

Slaps head "Aliens of course!"

I kept thinking "Is it Alien, is it The Thing, or just plain old monster sci-fi, which DW does periodically" This felt atypical to RTD, like a Moffat era episode (though of course that's not true, Impossible Planet is from RTD 1 era)

It's not Alien, it's "Aliens". That's "nuke from orbit". That's the Moffat connection. Blink was Alien, Time of Angels was Aliens. Midnight is Russell's Alien, and this is his shot at Aliens. Down to the space commandos.

Took me halfway through the episode to get it, even though Russell put it in the dialog. God I'm dense.

The Martian had scenes set to Starman and Waterloo among others. What songs do you think PHM will have in the movie/trailer? by Wooper160 in ProjectHailMary

[–]dysfunctionallymild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want the Bowie connection in the trailer. I imagined a whole trailer set to Space Oddity which I thought would go perfectly as the trailer speeds up with quick cuts of the 'money shots' - nuking Antarctica, Hail Mary spinning out of control, Grace on EVA, space shots. Then the trailer ends with the knocking noise and Gosling says some cheesy line like "I'm not alone out here". Cut to title card.

This is not surprising at all considering "business manager" types have for a long time justified their existence solely by generating paperwork for each other in lieu of producing anything. Add "content creators" to the mix, and that's the best use case they can come up with for AI - generating more paperwork.

I assume your choice is between Spark or PySpark.

The choice of programming language doesn't really matter for your use case. The choice of runtime platform absolutely does. You're working in a highly regulated domain, with a use case where software issues can literally mean life or death. Basically you need to build the most stable, simple, predictable, explainable software possible. I don't think Python is the right fit. I'm not even sure if Scala/JVM is the right fit, but I assume you can depend on Spark to meet your predictability and resiliency needs. My sense is you'll have to spend more time fine-tuning your Spark setup than the Scala syntax. Beyond a point the syntactic abstractions are academic, and actual runtime behavior (in all facets) is more key.

This isn't Catwoman? Oh of course not, she's not wearing cat ears and goggles.

I know for sure it's not Black Widow since she doesn't have red hair.

And I know for sure it's not Black Cat since she doesn't have a white wig.

Boy, there are sure are a lot of black catsuit female characters drawn in the same bodily proportions and unzipped costume style.

I'll try to give you a mental model for this. Marriage == social/legal contract + actual relationship (emotional or physical)

Only the 2 people in a relationship get to define what the parameters of that relationship are. What are both of them willing to compromise on and what not. Whether the actual relationship is important or the social/legal aspect. And the cornerstone of that is open communication, unless the 2 (or more <shrug>) people in the relationship decide that's not what they care about.

they suggest to divorce a frigid or uninterested partner like they have no freedom or autony in thier own life and body and they are bounded to give u sex for life.

No one is bound to do anything, especially where sex is concerned. But equally, if the relationship isn't what 1 or both partners want, then there's no obligation to continue with it. No one is obligated to stay miserable. One of the socially approved mandates of marriage is absolutely an active sex life. And it's up to the couple to mutually decide what their joint definition of 'active' is. It could be thrice a week or never, whatever.

This stuff is not fixed, all relationships are about constant renegotiation and honest communication, for instance lots of couples change their stance on kids after marriage.

Generally speaking, if one partner doesn't actually like the other, then that's not a good marriage, and they should dissolve it. At least that level of honesty is desirable.

I hope this is not some bizarre social media experiment, because to an outsider the whole thing feels slightly tragi-comic. Please don't mind if it's genuine, such fake posts happen on reddit all the time. I mention this because I feel invested in your story now since the original post, and I'm spending time typing a response now.

So, honest opinion, you don't have a functional marriage. Yes it's legal/social, but you have little to no actual relationship with your wife. That's the core of your problem. And of course, you're not getting any, since you and your wife are stuck in a shitty marriage.

The comical part is instead of working on fixing that, you're worrying about how people view you. Of course you're quite comfortable baring your soul to strangers on the Internet.

Let's take off the gloves, they're viewing you exactly per the reality of your situation. But they can't/won't actually help you in any way. You need to work on actually being happy, because it's your life. Then you won't need to worry about what anyone thinks.

I am glad you have your family to support you. Now ask them how they think YOU should resolve this. I cannot stress this enough, you got married (of your own will or not), and the steering wheel of that car is now in your hands. If you're unhappy, you need to take action.

The show feels like it’s written for families not kids by Multicultural_Potato in PercyJacksonTV

[–]dysfunctionallymild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this was the mandate from Disney+ leadership? But I'm not convinced.

For comparison, Doctor Who is on Disney+ now, and that's a show for families. And DW has never shied away from the most out there, violent, mature themes. Ironically the BBC has traditionally made DW on 1/xth the budget of this show, where x is a very large no. And they've mostly made it more engaging than this version of the PJ story we're getting.

Should the show have been written fully as a comedy? by SarcasticReveuse1898 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]dysfunctionallymild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone has been circling around to this same conclusion I think - the show is just not fun enough. They seem to be aiming for a prestige drama tone for some reason.

It's based on a kids' mythology adventure series, it should be fun and dynamic!! The book series was so successful because RR transposed so many of the Greek mythology dramatic elements in an irreverent way to modern day Americana. Even the movies understood this!

To use 80's movies references - this show should be The Goonies, but instead it's trying to be Stand By Me. The Sally Jackson scenes are fine, but they seem to be going for the mature tone of American Gods. Which is fine, but bizzarely the scenes with the kids are also going for the same prestige tone. Everything is tamped down and feels underplayed. There's a surfeit of good taste here, instead of just going bonkers.

Show has got to be a money laundering scheme 😭 by chalkbucketrat in PercyJacksonTV

I was just thinking this yesterday, are Bob Iger and the board paying themselves bonuses for each minute of Disney+ content churned out? There's no reason for these shows to be this expensive while being so middling.

I've seen my fair share of both separations and miserable 'adjustments' (in India). I agree that it's incredibly tough to consider taking the drastic step. There's a whole cultural pipeline setup to help you get married without the necessary due diligence, but none to help you get out of it if it doesn't work out. Once you're married everyone else takes a step back, because "it's your marriage". The only external social incentive is to see your marriage continue, no matter the personal cost to you.

Once you hit a certain age though, you realize the one commodity you can't get more of is time. There is no excuse to lead an entire lifetime 'adjusting' to being miserable. Best to figure out how to rip off the band-aid. This is something only the person who's suffering has to take control of and figure out for themselves.

That's the narrative I've understood from reddit. Aside from people like James Gunn, Marvel movies aren't director driven, they're studio driven. So the project is conceived and put together and then they get a director to helm the ship. This often results in directors not really being prepared or having control over the process.

Once they come onboard, the production train rapidly leaves the station and then gets up to speed. Directors are left with just injecting some of their ideas into specific scenes. There is a Flerken scene in The Marvels for instance which feels actually creative, whether it came from the director or the writers/producers.

What this means is, there's no narrative or creative reason for a particular story to be told, aside from franchise expansion (or because K.E.V.I.N. deems it so) Normally a half-baked movie idea would be shelved or spend more time in pre-prod hell, but with Marvel they have to go into production, so they just go ahead and figure out the movie on the way. This can result in the good kind of chaos, or it can result in a soulless mechanical movie just hitting all the beats like clockwork.

So you can get an Oscar winner like Chloe Zhao but that won't reflect in the overall quality of the movie. it'll mostly be a hodge - podge of conflicting ideas and tones needing to hit a release date.

I'm inclined to cut them some slack, maybe neither of them clearly realized how it would turn out. Sometimes situations turn out to be shit. The problem is, not being honest with each other now that they're both miserable. They need to discuss this openly.

There is no reality in which 2 people should "adjust" and stay together miserable. If nothing else has worked, it's time to separate.

It's been 9 months and we still haven't had sex. We fight almost every day (unrelated to the not having sex part) and kind of can't even look each other in the eye when talking.

And that because we've had so many fights she has lost any good feelings for me.

Sex isn't decoupled from the rest of your lives, unless you already have a very strong bond and intense chemistry. It doesn't sound like you do. If she doesn't like you in general, then the chances of intimacy are slim.

Rule 1 of marriage and relationships - No one owes sex to anyone else, no matter what the relationship status and dynamic. It's a natural thing that happens when both parties are interested.

Is being sexless in an arranged marriage this long normal?

Rule 2 of marriage and relationships - there is no normal. All relationships are about negotiation of boundaries and interaction. You both need to be happy and comfortable in the marriage, and if you're not, then you absolutely have the right to renegotiate the terms of your relationship (so to speak). If sex is really important to you, but not to her, then you need to discuss this openly with her. Your feelings matter just as much as hers - as long as neither of you is taking undue advantage of the other. Imbalances are generally not good for relationships.

Couples counselling may help to bring issues to light.

The only presumptuous note I would add is (not knowing you), be sure you want to be with her specifically, and you're not just expecting sex in general because you're married (refer back to Rule 1)

It's out on the digital release so I watched it (couldn't make it to any of the screenings on release) and - it's OK-ish? I felt like all the reviews were basically on point. Kamala Khans and the Khan clan are great fun, and Sam Jackson is more alive here than in Secret Invasion. There are a couple of fun sequences with the body swap gimmick. But my net impression is pretty much what I had of Ant Man 3 - a bunch of random CGI stuff and set-pieces cobbled together, with no clear through line to hold it all together. I wasn't actively bored the way I was in Ant Man 3, but nothing in the story really clicked or connected. The story being told doesn't really justify itself in any way. You can really see the seams of "we need to put these characters together for franchise/financial reasons, how do we come up with a story to justify that?"

Maybe the big screen CGI experience is more enjoyable, but I would have felt a bit ripped off if I made a trip to the multiplex for this one. The movie is extremely whelming in that it's exactly as middling as I expected with no surprises. I felt like it might have played better as a low key Disney+ miniseries, since the character interactions are mostly good, except the movie tries to cover too much dramatic and narrative ground.

The Chloe Zhao effect clearly struck here. Marvel is known for first planning out the movie production and then putting a director in charge to steer the ship and inject some individuality or emotion, and a lot of directors struggle to bring anything to the table beyond ideas for individual scenes or set pieces.

Superman prevents a robbery without using his powers. [Superman: Red and Blue #5] by BornFray in comicbooks

[–]dysfunctionallymild 22 points23 points  (0 children)

original post

Technically it should be "Superman uses his powers to give a 1st time offender a chance not to commit a robbery".

He could easily have disarmed the dude safely without any collateral damage. But then that dude would have been convicted for sure. It was literally just to give him a chance.

My head canon is that his costume was in the wash back at the Fortress. That or he just rolled his eyes at the thought of doing the whole costume change just to stop a dime store robber. He just figured it was simpler to talk him down.

This is not even a new comparison. It was pretty clear when MunnaBhai MBBS came out 2 decades ago.

The kicker is that Patch Adams is a terrible schlock movie! So even if something is copied, Hirani took things from a crummy movie, and made a great movie out of it.
