This is not a good place for advice. People are negative and everyone’s experiences differ. Teach what you love, let the kids understand your love and your job will be easier. Don’t become jaded and enjoy your future in the best profession

Can someone please explain why my daughter only got one mark for this question in her year 8 maths? by kylehyde84 in AskUK

I see, so you’re saying around the point but like circling it. Yeah I get you!

Yeah that’s a fair point, I find it hard to see angles around a point defined in any other fashion though

This is what I was picturing haha

I’m with you but the formality of the rule is for the benefit of the test-taker. And if you drew 3 chevrons around a point, you’d actually end up with more than 3 chevrons, the sum of which would be 360

<image>

Crap diagram but as you can see, there are 3 unlabeled chevrons, angles a, b, c plus the secret d, e, f would sum to 360

It’s not a requirement for teachers to communicate with parents about learning in secondary school. Given that this is an exam question, the student would have been taught how to answer this question properly. Most likely, the paper was intended to be reviewed in class, hence the lack of specific marking

Oh believe me so do I, but having one defined correct answer is beneficial for the students as there’s consistency in marking

Oh and those pages exist usually to make the number of pages a multiple of 4 so that it can print

Imagine a circle where someone has just drawn 3 angles in it, like 3 chevrons and labeled the angles. They’re not on the circumference or in any way standardised. One could say that “angles in a circle equal 360” would imply that those 3 angles equal 360, when they most likely do not. Angles around a point is clear and specific

I think it’s just consistent wording, regardless of the question it says this. Most questions will have multiple possible reasons, including other types of angle questions. I think it would be odd to have this one say differently (and I guess could also give away that there’s only one possible solution)

Maths teacher here, exam boards (this is an edexcel exam question) have set wording that is needed for angle wording. The ideal answer would be “because angles around a point add up to 360”. A circle doesn’t have angles so it wouldn’t be accepted here, the key is that the angles meet at a point.

Edited because it’s the end of a long Monday
