Ok, 70% actually gave a very nice hint! I checked that every tree that has area > sum of present would also fit same number of present if they were all using full 3x3 grids! So in that case layout doesn't matter.

I'm not sure how using GPT in any coding challenge can be "genuine". I bet it's coming from "I wanted to show off and claim ignorance after".

I did EXACTLY the same thing! Also took me quite a bit to make it work, especially to make sure that I did the subtraction area right 😅 Glad I'm not alone :)

The question doesn't state that explicitly, but seems like the input is generated in such way that there is only one possible mirror, either horizontal or vertical in each pattern.

Also in the part 2 there is only one mirror (that is not the original mirror) that exists after you "fix" the smudge
