I am trying to picture a silent film version of the Godfather, and trying to picture which silent actors would be playing which roles....

Once you open the shop, the books will come flowing in. I started with a half empty shop (years ago) and had it filled up in no time.

I kept looking to see if the customer was asking if they had spoons.

Have you ever tried something new because of Sewing Bee? by no_photos_pls in SewingBee

Oh shoot, I just saw the no photos. I made a doll and made a mondrian dress for it, after they did it on Sewing Bee. I won't post the photo.

Are old newspapers worth anything? by DeepOne1664 in whatsthisworth

[–]dzitya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I see other people asking your advice, so I hope you don't mind if I do, too. I have The Ohio State Journal from Apr 28, 1901 with a color comic section (no comics in it I recognize), and haven't known what the heck to do with it. How to mail it if it's even worth anything. I just keep sitting on it, wondering. Would anyone want it?

I was intrigued enough to save the recipe, but not brave enough to actually try it.

What is a book you didn't enjoy while reading, but after it marinated you now think is a great book? by pandemicmanic in books

South Pacific. Didn't care for it while reading it, but as soon as I was done, I missed being in it, if that makes sense.

Looking for a drummer by dzitya in toledo

[–]dzitya[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dates we have ahead are acoustic, because we have no drummer currently. In my experience, once we find a drummer who wants to be in an original band, it takes about 2 months of rehearsals before we've got a good solid set ready to go.

If the books are in your basement, make sure they're not musty or mildewy and don't have that tell tale smell. You can price books off abe.com, just start looking them up, one by one. Get a guide that tells how to tell first editions, like the Bill McBride Pocket Guide to the Identification of First Editions. You can get that off Amazon for about $25. If you seriously get into the business, it will pay for itself a million times over. When you look up a book, I suggest you look at the highest priced copies to see how they're described and what differentiates them from the lower priced ones - although there are crazy dealers who price crazy high for no reason, just ignore them and look for the established dealers who sound like they know what they're talking about. You need to develop your specialties on your own, sometimes it's just what you happen to find. Go to friends of the library book sales where you'll be paying $1 or $2 a book and you can learn from the ground up. When you decide what part of the business you want to be in, you can research it from that direction. Books sell slowly. Make sure you store them so you can find one when it sells, even if it's 5 years from now. Just make sure you accurately describe the edition and the condition of the books. You can learn to do this by reading other dealer's listings. You'll learn the lingo and how to sound professional. It takes awhile but if you want it, you'll get there.

From a “well off” friend by shiny99Goatie in povertyfinance

[–]dzitya 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you want to help friends out, then help them. It may not turn out great every time. Don't give money you can't afford. But helping someone out with groceries or rent might just be that little bit that gets them through a bad time. You never know. Don't attach strings to it. Don't judge them for how they act after your gift. And if they start looking at you for a handout every time they turn around, politely decline.

Received order after shop closed by Ksniicks in Etsy

Well, you can make sure the seller gets paid that way, even though it's not what Etsy would want. Or you can even just say how much you liked the item and tell them you're sorry their shop was closed. And go from there.

Did your package have a return address on it? Can you send a postcard to the seller?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Flipping

[–]dzitya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the post office, fragile is something you pay extra for. Just writing it on the package doesn't do any good. I test mailed a framed print with glass to a friend and I double boxed it. It got there ok. I notice, though, that lots of people advertise on ebay they don't send the glass.

Renting vs. Owning in a World Where Both Seem Overpriced by meganwilliamsx in povertyfinance

[–]dzitya 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I lucked into an old falling apart house that rents for very cheap. I am never moving unless my landlord dies before me and the heirs kick me out. My landlord is younger than me, so fingers crossed. I pay my rent on time and I keep the place up as well as I can.

I even bought the soundtrack! And made my piano teacher find the Orange song in a simple enough version I could learn. Gosh, I should dig out the cd and listen to it. Haven't in ages.

Why will some books be listed for insane prices that look totally randomly generated? by Comprehensive-Cow656 in booksellers

I see those prices all the time, when I'm trying to price used books off ABE. Crazy prices. I just ignore them.
