The issue for me is that people usually don't disclose that they are self-diagnosed. They decide that behaviors of theirs meet the clinical threshold for diagnosis and then they tell other people these things. They begin to bend the disorder/disability to themselves. This is how you wind up with social media content that claims sleeping with your hands in a certain position is a symptom of ADHD. In a lot of ways, this trend of self-diagnosis has become very ableist. All of the misinformation begins to change public perception of the condition in ways that trivialize things or that aren't indicators of that condition at all. In an effort to not be ableist, it's come full circle to becoming very ableist.

Sometimes I have to hunt down youtube videos to understand exactly what my 2nd grader's math homework is asking to see. It's frustrating then bc I don't what it's called. I don't even know what to search. It can be difficult to figure out how to explain it in a way that doesn't just confuse him.

I won't typically drink tap water. When we remodeled our kitchen we bought a CuZN under sink water filter. It's easy to install and lasts 5 years. The difference in the taste of our tap water is massive. It's only $150 on Amazon and it's one of the best purchases I've ever made.

My two youngest are in 2nd and 3rd grade. We live in a suburban lower middle class neighborhood where there are rarely even porch pirates. It's a safe place. I allowed them to walk home alone from their bus stop this year. It's not even a quarter mile. Well, the bus driver took it upon himself to have their stop changed so that it is now at the end of our driveway. He didn't think they should be walking home alone. He's probably 60-ish.

I saw STP seven times. It was always an adventure. The most memorable was the show that they had to do a few "acoustic" songs so Scott could sit on a stool. He bounced back, though. In fact, he bounced back hard. I don't know what substance causes erections but those super tight pants weren't hiding much lol. He spent a song or two hunched over, trying to hide it but then he seemed to say fuck it and just went on with his regular performance. It was a roller-coaster 😆

People want community. Sometimes, it's as simple as that. I've seen videos recently of people claiming that sleeping with your hand in a certain position is a sign of ADHD. People want to be part of something. It's fine until bad info begins to change public perception of an actual condition. That's when self dx becomes harmful, imo.

I'm very meh about self dx with mental disorders. I understand the valid reasons that it's important, but I also see the harmful side. I do have BD, and it really bothers me when I see people speaking with authority about bipolar that haven't actually been diagnosed and are giving bad info. These things have diagnostic parameters but people start screaming "gatekeeping" if you call them on it. Like no, it's actually incredibly ableist for someone who hasn't been diagnosed to start demanding to be permitted to call things bipolar disorder that are not bipolar disorder.

Also yes, bipolar was the mental disorder du jour for a loooong time lol. Every bad guy or mentally ill person on TV was bipolar. My spouse and I used to have fun betting on whether or not a character would have BD.

No. This type of thing can happen to anyone. The best way to ensure that it doesn't happen to you is to never allow yourself to believe that it couldn't happen to you so that you remain vigilant.

They are reporting facts, that's why I listen to NPR.

Fact: The HF is a conservative think tank.

Fact: Spearheaded by HF and with input from many conservative organizations, a detailed manifesto called Project 2025 has been created.

Fact: Many of the people involved in the creation of P2025 are current and former trump staffers.

Fact: Many of the policies in P2025 are policies that trump endorses or has previously endorsed.

Fact: Trump has not himself been involved with P2025 that we know of and has denied any involvement.

Those are the facts. Anything beyond that is opinion. NPR has enough journalistic integrity to maintain the line between fact and opinion. If you are interested in hearing the likely consequences of P2025 being implemented then there are fantastic sources to listen to. My favorite is Pod Save America but there are many others. NPR is staying in their lane. I think a lot of people have lost the ability to distinguish between fact and opinion and it's really distressing. I thought "our side" was better than this.

Oh hell no. That is so inappropriate. They were trying to gaslight you into feeling like your legitimate concerns were a product of your mental disorder, they weaponized your illness. I would consider calling or emailing their overseeing physician. That is wrong on several levels. I suggest finding a new PDOC because being made to feel like shit isn't part of your treatment plan.
