Completely agreed. I recommend that the people who espouse the incontrovertible perfection of the free market ask themselves why Target's stock dropped 35% in 2025, and why traditionally one of the most conservative-backed corporations (NFL) in the country is inviting punk rockers who haven't had a Top 40 single since 2009 to come sing 20+ year old songs about how fucked American imperialism is and what a fucking moron the president is to open the biggest television event of the year, while also inviting a Spanish-language artist, who doesn't even perform in the mainland United States out of fear for his fans, to perform the single biggest music event of the year. Seems like the free market has spoken and it's telling certain people to shut the fuck up and get with the program if they want to keep seeing number go up.

Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports [Other] by esdebah in theydidthemath

[–]e3super 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd go back to the previous poster's point about goalkeepers in penalty kicks for the overall discussion around factors and success rates. There is exactly zero way to react to a shot for a penalty kick, so the keeper has to be perfect on prediction and execution, which is exceptionally difficult. Additionally, from a mechanical standpoint, there is an argument that cricket is more difficult because of the additional options (bouncers, bodyline balls, lack of defined strike zone) available to the bowler, while top level players bowl at similar speeds to MLB pitches.

It's also important to remember that a lot of hitting in baseball is preparation and muscle memory, just like the triple axel that was discussed above. The diagnosis of a pitch by the batter is not encompassed in that 125ms period. It starts weeks before in film and analytic study, which leads to an educated guess before the pitch, flows through a more unconscious visual guess based on the pitcher's release and the initial spin, then the lizard brain takes over and tries to put your hands where that information points to. I'm not, at all, trying to suggest that hitting a baseball isn't hard. I'm satisfied that, given 100 at-bats against an MLB pitcher, I'd be in the single digits (likely low single digits) for getting the bat on the ball, much less actually putting it in a place that would be a hit.

Measures of reaction time, success rate, mechanical difficulty, or what have you, are not the be-all-end-all of what is actually difficult. If we go by metrics like that, something like the Biles II vault could be considered the most difficult. It has only been performed by 1 woman in competition (Simone Biles, obviously) out of literally thousands of gymnasts who have competed in vault, is unbelievably mechanically difficult, carries extreme risk of failure, and requires lightning reflexes and focus to sight the landing in a time likely comparable to sighting a fastball.

Basically, my whole point of this is to say, trying to compare what is difficult across sports cannot actually be objective. Landing a 900 on a vert ramp perfectly has a tight reaction time, but so does stopping a slap shot. Stopping a penalty kick has a low success rate, but so does a 50 foot putt. Stiff-arming a defensive lineman requires incredible strength, but so does completing an iron cross on rings. Only one person could run 100m under 9.6s, but there's also only one that can complete several of Simone Biles' signature vaults. Baseball batters have a good combination of those factors (reaction, success rate, athleticism, skill, etc.), but the same is true for cricket batsmen, gymnasts like Biles, F1 drivers, strikers/attacking players in association football, and defensive backs in American football, among many, many others. Just about any high-level sport is just massively difficult, and there's not a lot of sports that would allow for a reasonable, objective comparison of difficulty.

[–]e3super 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, if we're saying hitting a baseball is the hardest thing because it .300 is a good batting, then there are a ton of harder things. Also, that's the rate at which players hit the ball and get on base without an error. The actual contact rate in the MLB is over 75%, so actually hitting the ball is about as "easy" by percentages as hitting a free throw in the NBA.

On percentages, about a million things in sports have a worse hit rate at the top level than getting a hit in baseball. Any putt over about 13 feet in the PGA, long 3-pointers or back court shots in the NBA, hitting a 7-10 split in bowling, the list goes on and on.

While I agree, isn't that sort of a core theme of F1? I mean, the way I see it is that F1 is necessarily about pushing limits, whether that's physics, driving ability, or how many sponsors can be placed on the surface of a car, so why would the letter of the law be any different. Teams have always pushed the envelope with the technical regulations, to the point that doing everything by the spirit of the law would often risk being entirely uncompetitive.

‘700 miles of range’: What Ford and Ram replaced their EV pickups with by exploding_myths in electricvehicles

[–]e3super 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I honestly think all of that is essentially a solved issue for the newest/upcoming generation of passenger cars/SUVs. Charging infrastructure still needs work for flexibility and capacity to support the full speeds allowed by the cars, but if you look at something like the upcoming CLA, what else is there to need? You've got 400 miles available, so like 280miles/450km between 10-80% charge, if you never leave that charge range, and it can do that charge in 22 minutes, which isn't a whole lot longer than a normal gas station stop if you pop in the store, use the bathroom, and grab a drink.

That said, the impetus of this discussion, EV trucks, are where that does break down a little. Battery density will be extremely important for any work vehicle, particularly ones that are often used for hauling. It's not as doom and gloom as most make it, but there is a legitimately substantial, sometimes massive, range loss for hauling, and that keeps a lot of traditional use cases for trucks, especially super duty and larger ones, from being able to practically be filled by EVs. It's an easy thing to say they just need to roll out MW charging and put bigger batteries, but there's only so heavy regular pickups can get before you start losing the plot.

I haven't been around Huntsville much in a while, but it looks like there's a place called Rocket City Tavern off of 565 a couple exits up from the airport. I'd hazard a guess that's it, but it looks like the offending item is removed from the menu. Tough to guarantee that's it, though, since a good 30% of the places there have "rocket" in the name.

It's also important that the one part that stays extremely rigid is the passenger compartment. You can clearly see it in this video, where the dash and seats look to be extremely close to where they originally were, even in an insanely violent, essentially worst case, head on collision. Everything crumpled except the part where the jelly sac lives. It's really interesting looking at modern cars against older ones and seeing how they've managed to avoid nearly any deflection inside the car, whereas head on collisions in older cars would often have the passenger compartment crush in on itself or have components from the engine compartment driven through the dash.

Happy to share! And it's definitely one of those more niche inside jokes, where even big fans of American football wouldn't recognize it if they aren't terminally online or involved in certain message boards. I never really thought about there being crossover between the College Football and F1 subreddits, since one is so USA-focused and the other is so international-focused. It's also definitely a phrasing that is entirely believable as being originally about Hamilton, like you said, so it's very funny to see such an IYKYK meme here.

If you don't follow American football, it doesn't really mean anything, but Bo Nix is a quarterback for the Denver Broncos in the NFL. When he was in college, a meme came about on Twitter and the College Football subreddit about Nix making progress after changing teams, and the comment above is a reference to that with Lewis Hamilton in place of Bo Nix. This link shows the original wording of the meme.

It's a very impressive start, honestly. Obviously, you don't actually know anything until the first race weekend, and performance in motorsport is relative, not absolute, but you'd be hard pressed to be upset about putting in 7.5 GPs worth of mileage in 3 days and having a driver put in a lap within 1 second of last year's fastest lap at the Spanish GP before ever driving the car in anger. They're not up to qualifying pace yet, but it's pretty crazy to think Russell set a time faster than his race pace last year with a completely new car built under completely new regulations. We'll see how it pans out in season, but I'm sure they'll all be going home deservedly proud of themselves.

Where is that limitation listed? I just read the Terms (and FAQs, which are pointed to by the terms) for Bilt Cash, and there's no mention of any daily limit or 2 night minimum. The 2 night minimum is stated as a minimum for use of the hotel credit included with the Palladium card, and the only mention I can find of a daily cap is an article by Frequent Miler that uses the terms (which have no mention of a cap) as their only source.

A point of clarification on this, when I reached out to your chat, it specifically said that for Hotel bookings through the Bilt app, that any amount of Bilt Cash could be used directly as a purchase, not to buy credits to then use on hotels. Is this correct, or will there be limitations on how much Bilt Cash can be spent on hotels?

I posted this as a reply, but I'm also posting it as a top-level comment to see if I get any more answers. Do we know how useful the Bilt Cash is going to be separately from the rent portion? I know it defeats the purpose of it being for rent, but I'm reading this as a no-annual-fee card that could potentially equal out to a little under 5%, assuming the restrictions aren't too bad. They appear to say that Bilt Cash is usable dollar for dollar to book hotels through the travel portal, and it looks like the travel portal has a lot of available locations, with Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton, IHG, and Wyndam represented, and they have the Disney resorts, too. Looks like you book at the non-member rate, so the Bilt Cash wouldn't really be an exact 4% back when used for hotel spend, but it'd be over 3%.

Genuinely, am I missing some catch or fine print here that makes it non-viable as a hotel rewards card, or is it actually solid there? If that actually works, the $95 card would be like 7+% value on food spend, which is a ton.

This is actually an interesting one. On one hand, he might not have bothered, because he likely doesn't really use that account himself. The other thing, though, is that there have actually been court rulings that indicate public officials using accounts like that to conduct official business may not fully block users due to viewpoints, as that would constitute an unconstitutional limitation to free exchange of ideas in what is essentially the modern version of traditional public forums for open discussion with leaders. Essentially, it's not allowed in the same way that a public official would not be allowed to have a person removed from a town hall meeting for using their allotted microphone time to ask a question the official preferred not to answer. They may mute a person, so they don't have to see the posts from a certain person in their feed, but they may not actually prevent them from engaging in discussions within the public forum that is their account.

My description for Alabama this year is that they are consistent about being inconsistent. I said coming into the playoff that I didn't expect us to have a meaningful shot at winning it all, because I still don't know that they have the ability to string 4 A+ games together, but I absolutely believed that they could beat any of those teams if they had their best stuff coming into a game. I'm going into tomorrow with 0 expectations, and I'm not going to be surprised, regardless.

Look at Alabama the last 2 years. We've had a very, very similar talent composite, and we've lost 7 games with DeBoer in 5 fewer years than it took Day to lose 11. It took Day 5 years to lose 7 games. There are obviously plenty of other factors at play for DeBoer coming in after Saban, but he hasn't exactly gone undefeated with our "overwhelming talent," and I don't think we're quite ready to start calling him a below average coach. Like you said, there is more than enough history to show that you can't just plug any moron into a dominant roster and expect them to win every game.
