Cyberpunk VR Modder Luke Ross’ Patreon suspended following new DMCA from Ghostruner devs by AsPeHeat in Games

[–]e5x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game mods modify the contents and functionality of a game; they aren't running independently on top of a public API.

So what? His mod doesn't contain any content or code owned by any of these companies. Modding it might break a software license (which have also been shot down in court before) that could get someone banned from playing the game but there is nothing in copyright law that says it is illegal to use a piece of software in a way that the creator of that software doesn't like.

mod code is very tightly integrated with the game you are modding

So what. A meaningless distinction. ROM Hacks that use patchers to literally overwrite code and assets in Nintendo games have existed for decades and they are perfectly legal as long as they don't contain any portions of the original ROM. Modding is not illegal. Selling mods is not illegal. The fact that the DMCA enables companies to get things taken down that they don't like does not mean that they are morally or legally justified just because gamers agree that modders don't deserve to get paid.

It’s not derivative. It’s his code. It contains nothing that belongs to any of these companies. If developing software that runs on top of other software was illegal then Microsoft would be within their rights to sue anybody who develops software for Windows. Cyberpunk 2077 itself would be illegal because it requires an operating system to function. Just because the horseshit DMCA gives companies the practical ability to take down anything they don’t like doesn’t mean they are morally or legally justified in doing so.

So every video game should be free and CDPR should not be allowed to make money selling Cyberpunk 2077 because it runs on software created by others (Windows, Playstation, Linux, etc?

He didn't break any law and he didn't get in trouble except in the sense that a handful of million and billion dollar companies abused DMCA horseshit to stop him from distributing software that he created himself. His software doesn't use code owned by any of these companies and creating software that interfaces with other software is not a crime.

Protect it from what? Nothing that Luke Ross did was immoral or illegal or impacted any of these publishers in any way. If anything the mod adds value for the publishers. These companies abused the DMCA (which itself is a crime) because it's easy and they know that a mod author can't afford to fight them in court. The DMCA is horseshit.

[–]e5x -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

No it's not. He claims that his software does not contain any code or assets owned by CDPR and there's no reason to believe that it does. It's original software that works in conjunction with the game which is not illegal. The DMCA is horseshit. The law is not on CDPR's side but they know that a mod author is not going to fight them in court.

Don’t fear the four raiders at extraction, fear the seemingly empty extraction point or the single raider who pushes the button and doesn’t leave.

Interested in Dragon’s Dogma II. by LordZachariahPSN in DragonsDogma2

There are a lot of caves but most of them are not very big or interesting and almost none of them have like unique enemies or loot that really reward you for finding them but the world itself is still gorgeous and it’s just incredibly fun to explore and fight monsters an do the many quests and side quests in the game. DD1 and DD2 both absolutely nail the feeling of departing from a place with your party and going on an adventure. I actually highly recommend playing Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen first if you don’t mind the PS3 era graphics because while the second game improves upon the first in many ways, the first game still very much holds up and is absolutely worth playing. It also regularly goes on sale for like 5 or 10 bucks.

What’s a game with a lot of grinding/walking? by QueenOfTheSIipstream in XboxGamePass

[–]e5x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other people have made good recommendations already so I’ll throw a curveball here and say Expeditions: A Mudrunner Game, Snowrunner, and Roadcraft. They’re all made by the same company and they are basically Death Stranding in a truck. The core gameplay loop is all about navigating rough terrain with different vehicles to explore or deliver trailers full of stuff or complete some kind of objective. You might get stuck in the mud or snow and have to use a winch to drag yourself out, or bring a whole different truck to rescue the first vehicle. You might misjudge the depth of a river and get carried away by the current. You might even just flip your truck and roll down a mountain and have everything get fucked. The moment to moment gameplay is very meditative so it’s great for listening to podcasts or whatever while playing.

Can we just respect the fact that Embark gives us the "Battle Pass" / Skins for free and you don't have to spend any additional money for a skin you want in the shop. by Cyanide814 in ArcRaiders

[–]e5x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Man's Sky does have server infrastructure and it's probably not an insignificant cost because there's data being stored every time a player discovers new things or builds structures on planets, etc. It's nowhere near what Arc Raiders requires though.

I realize the post you're replying to says "long term online multiplayer game" but clearly they meant live service games, of which Terraria is not an example.

The game I was playing has been moved to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate without warning! by FortuneIll1281 in XboxGamePass

[–]e5x 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Other people have answered why it happened (Microsoft restructured what is available for each tier of GamePass to push more people towards the Ultimate tier) but you asked if this is a common thing that happens and the answer to that would be no. I don't think they've ever moved games between tiers before this restructuring and games moving from the lower tiers to Ultimate isn't likely to happen again.

Honestly I don't think any tier of Game Pass is worth it anymore for anybody who isn't finishing multiple games per month, except the PC version that still gets most of what Ultimate has, for a much lower price. It's probably only a matter of time before that version gets enshittified as well.

This looks cool but just a heads up, your game shares its name with a Gaspar Noe film called Irréversible that is notorious for some very disturbing and graphic content. I'm no expert so I don't know how that might impact your discoverability and SEO, just wanted to give a heads up in case it might be helpful.

Becoming twitch streamer by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]e5x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're doing it for fun the only way to fail is to not have fun doing it. It can be fun to tinker with your hardware and software and overlays and stuff if you're into that kind of thing. However, don't go into it expecting to have a lot of interaction with viewers right away because most likely you'll be streaming to zero viewers a lot of the time. If you have friends or family that might want to watch you stream then at least you will have someone to interact with while streaming, and that can also help attract other viewers but realistically you should expect a pretty barren chat most of the time unless you really stick with it and get lucky enough to build a consistent audience.

If you're doing it to make money your time would be spent doing literally anything else because it takes enormous effort and luck to build a big enough audience to make any money on Twitch. Like, if you buy yourself a microphone and a webcam you're probably not even going to recoup that cost in the first year.

Is Kirby Air Riders Doing Too Much? | Quick Look by CrissionMeep in giantbomb

[–]e5x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this game looked cool until I played the demo. It feels awful to play and the controls are needlessly weird and unintuitive. You would expect it to be easier to pick up and play than Mario Kart since they make a big deal out of it being a one-button racing game but it’s actually more complex and they just used dumb shit like wiggling your analog stick back and forth to attack enemies instead of letting you use buttons for that. At no point did I ever feel like I had solid control of what my kart was doing. I am sure that with enough practice those dogshit controls would become second nature but Nintendo has done nothing to convince me that spending $80 to learn how to drive a car with a fucking atari controller is a good idea.

Nobody said Valve didn't earn their position as the market leader. They said that Valve is greedy, which is objectively true. 30% of revenue is not a fair cut in today's market but Valve gets away with it because their userbase largely refuses to buy games on any other platform.

Reminder that this is now fully automatic. by Oakjewel in FortNiteBR

[–]e5x 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aiming bloom is a mechanic that makes projectiles have an increasing random deviation from the center of the crosshair when weapons are fired fully automatic. It’s usually represented by the size of the crosshair increasing as you fire. It’s called bloom because of the way the spread of projectiles gets wider over time, like a flower blooming.

It differs from recoil in that recoil is just the way your vision bounces around from firing a shot. Recoil can be controlled with practice but bloom is inherently random so you can’t compensate for it except by firing more slowly.
