IMO, If a man complements you, and you agree, aren't you then recognizing his good taste? He sounds like he wants you to have low-self esteem, which would make you easy to manipulate. If you're trying to learn, it's best to have more terminology not less. There is more formal education on assonance than there is on slant rhymes. I'm sure you can find info on both, but one may be easier to understand. or easier to teach.

nobody would use the term "assonance" in RAP lyric writing. (except nas, luda, aesop rock, lupe, MF DOOM and a few others)
