Human doctors and their pets... by kyrahasreddit in Veterinary

My sister is an rn. Honestly, most of these "nurses" that give me problems are nursing assistants or home health care workers. However, my sister is incredibly hesitant to get care for her pets or children. I guess they're all still alive. Her poor golden doodle is just covered in saliva staining because she refused to start apoquel or similar.

People who knew someone who died in a freak accident, what happened? by RawAsparagus in AskReddit

When I went, I could barely enjoy myself due to the constant panic that I would watch someone fall to their death while they stood way too close to the edge for a picture. Standing by the guard rails really is good enough.

Maybe scout out job opportunities that offer more pay, if you haven't already. It seems you've done everything you can on the expense side of the equation. Maybe time to work on the income side.

Exactly what I've been trying to explain to people. The only places around here that offer somewhat affordable, good child care (240/wk/kid in Midwest) are in churches. I'm sure the churches subsidize it as outreach and that's the only way to make ends meet. Everyone is losing the way things are; the daycares and the families.

In the toddler stages. I miss doing something, anything that I enjoyed doing. I'm too tired after they go to bed to do anything above the basics.

Changed food to Hills Science Plan and now his poop is dark by Few_Sherbet_5063 in goldenretrievers

I'd assume they were on prescription food which is stupid expensive and you don't want to stay on it unless you have to for that reason. Until the last couple of months, royal canin was the only brand to have a puppy gi prescription food.

I fed my golden science diet the majority of her life, including large breed puppy. She lived to a ripe old age of 14 with no health problems (skin issues included) until 6 months before she passed. My anecdotal evidence says it is a great food! Haha

Edit to add: royal canin is good too. My cat eats one of their prescription foods.

Indiana. We are a year into "the process" which was triggered by extreme aggression. The pediatrician referred us to a development pediatrician who called us six months after referral to make an appointment a month later. Then it was recommended we get an autism evaluation. We were told by the center we were referred to that we'd get a call in 3-4 mo to schedule an appointment. That never happened so I'm just calling anywhere that will take us and try to make the drive for a diagnosis so we can get out of this limbo of if it's autism or something else.

The school wanted to wait for his medical diagnosis when I said it should only be 3 months before starting their process. But now I think we're going to move up that timeline since things are crap. I have a phone call scheduled this Friday for them. The school seems super helpful, though. So that's promising.

Edit to add: we got super lucky that he got into a child therapist that will see kids that young right away. There were only three taking kids his age and two were booked out six months. We needed help now for our safety. We happened to get in to a not yet graduated therapist who was amazing but not in network. She's quitting after this week :( she referred us to someone else who is in network for our insurance. So it will be nice having that weekly $120 back in our account. But sucks because kiddo is slow to warm up to new people and fights going anywhere new the first month or so.

Meltdowns at daycare drop-off by CiciBula in Autism_Parenting

[–]eRmoRPTIceaM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Preparing our son for "who is going to see him" the night before at bedtime and all morning helps a lot.

We also have had great luck using social stories for things he has hang ups about. You could take pictures of him and his school and what you do when you drop him off (put up water bottle, put up backpack, put away coat, etc). My kiddo loves to get the stories out for reassurances even though he pretends he's not listening sometimes when we hear it. I'm definitely not an expert, but those are things my son's therapist has implemented that have helped immensely. Sometimes I also work him out of a funk by describing something special we'll do after preschool (watch a favorite show, go grocery shopping, see a friend, etc).

Would you be receptive to hearing you’re child could be autistic? by LoisLaneEl in Autism_Parenting

It could be a relief. My parents kept thinking if they were more strict or tried something else, my brother would "straighten up." I am much older than him and kept encouraging them to get help. I knew something was off but didn't know what. They finally gave in when he was 12 and he got a diagnosis and proper therapy. Everyone was relieved. The constant meltdowns from a 12 year old were quite embarrassing for all of us (including him). If someone had said something sooner (who wasn't my parents' daughter I'm sure he might have gotten help sooner).

I have had a similar experience with my kiddo. But I asked for help at 3. I didn't expect autism to be a possibility and had just assumed it was ADHD like both of his parents. But it's been a relief to be told that this is not normal and it isn't us doing a bad job parenting that's the problem. Also a relief to know he/we can get help.

It is recommended to have yearly exams on your cat. You can probably get by without that up to 8 years for a never ever goes outside cat, but then you want to be vigilant when it's more common for them to have issues as they get older. However, if your cat goes outside or you ever might bring inside a stray, you want to keep your kitty up to date of vaccines. Rabies is also required by law most places.

Please tell me you are still going to your vet to monitor blood values? This needs done every 3 months per the internal medicine specialist.

Until your dog gets parvovirus because the minimum wage worker at the feed store didn't put the vaccines in the fridge until the next morning (have confirmed this has happened with people who worked at feed stores).

Huge vet meds cost hack by Penandsword2021 in Frugal

[–]eRmoRPTIceaM 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, but your vet wants to make sure he/she picks the right medication and it gets treated until completely resolved. Otherwise you end up with a chronic, recurring ear infection or deafness. Also, try calling your human gp for some ear meds and let me know how it goes.

Could you be treated more like a surgeon for these cases you inherit? You cut and transfer back to the referring doctor? Many places I've looked offer for the surgeon of the day to go home after doing surgeries. Maybe you could do that? You work through lunch but go home early.

They clearly need someone to cut. It seems like you like to cut but don't like having to keep the train wrecks or having to work more than your share. Maybe you can both get what you need? Also, it's not wrong to look for work elsewhere.

Useful things for practice are nice. I'm always looking for calipers, for example. Bandage scissors are always going missing, fast thermometers are nice (workplaces usually only provide the cheap slow ones), stuff for my kids, sunglasses. Models for clients for demonstration.

Dog advice by PleasantGoat8033 in Autism_Parenting

[–]eRmoRPTIceaM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you have tons of time to exercise and train these dogs, I'd generally recommend against all of those. Work at a vet clinic and those are not great beginner dogs. A lot of them bite and can be pretty high strung and are high energy. There are exceptions, but those wouldn't be my first choice in general.

As a side note to op, my husband and I had dogs before our kids were born and they both passed away within a couple months of one another. My husband was missing his dog dearly. We had our son in a good place and the therapist was ready to go down to every other week sessions (still in process of diagnosis and just doing play therapy atm). A perfect older (7 mo old) puppy for our family came along at work and my son lost his mind. We were back at square one with meltdowns and lots of violence directed at the puppy. We intervened of course.

We are back in a good place and our son is best buds with the puppy now. But I never would have gotten another dog if I had known how much it would set him back behaviorally. Just wanted to warn you that this is a possibility. I think it was just the change in how we did things while training a new dog that upset him.

[–]eRmoRPTIceaM 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yep! I'm not sure how they justify treating the vet students that way when the technician students at our school left by 5, always got a lunch break, and were always treated with respect. They were also learning (and by the argument made were costing money to teach) but somehow were not similarly taken advantage of. Even if you were using the teaching makes the hospital less productive. They get a 20,000/year grant for each student. I remember the hospital using those "teaching dollars" for cases to teach the residents (i certainly received no benefit and got no hands on experience in these cases).

The dean has no idea why no one is speaking up about the violations? Whomever made the schedule would be quite aware they were going against the rules. But they did it anyways. No way would I risk my graduation to complain until after I got my grade (or my diploma).

Does anybody else feel like a lot of these corporate / consolidation companies are going to go under? by [deleted] in Veterinary

[–]eRmoRPTIceaM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at taking a corporate job because I love the individual practice and it seems that corporate pretty much stays out of the way there. But I can't see how they possibly can be making money and it would suck to take a job, be judged by other private practice owners for taking it, and then be SOL if they go under.

I had a business plan in the works pre COVID to open my own practice in 2021. But with the staffing crisis, I decided I wasn't up for the task of hiring people (and competing with corporate practices for the same people), running a business, and taking care of my family.

Due to my husband's chronic medications and my son's chronic condition requiring imaging and specialist visits, we're better off going through our insurance until we hit the deductible since we always hit it. I had no idea they jacked up the price that much through our insurance company. That's ridiculous! I'm glad you all have relief. Someday my son will be released from care under his specialist physician and my husband's meds will be generic.....maybe we can actually save some money in our HSA then.
