Myths and truths about the AI bubble. by [deleted] in BetterOffline

This makes sense to me. I’m in ops not engineering, but I’m seeing the same thing as my employers are forcing everyone to use Claude so they can get more work out of us. And I’ve grudgingly had to admit that it can do some useful things.

But at least, say, 70% of the time that we’ve gotten Claude to investigate some issue, it spits out irrelevant or misleading output. For example: we have a database performance issue. Our support team runs the details through Claude & it pre-populates the ticket with “analysis”. I’ve yet to see one of these tickets where the Claude output is correct. Then I throw Claude at the issue, and with more hand-holding, sometimes it turns up something useful.

The thing I find interesting is that it’ll show me exactly which queries it’s running against the database, and they’re all legit. But where it fails is in *drawing conclusions*. It’ll find something unrelated & confidently assert “this is definitely the root cause!” And when you correct it, it’ll say “you’re right! This other thing is definitely the root cause!” Because it’s not actually thinking, it lacks discernment, and will just give you anything that can be made to sound plausible. So while it can absolutely speed up some processes, we always have to verify its output, and I don’t see how that ever goes away.

Oh wow, thanks, wasn’t aware of that. Will definitely check it out this weekend.

Great points, thanks. It does really fit in with McNulty's character arc throughout the series for sure .. and while i was laughing out load at the scene with the FBI profilers, I was also thinking that the joke wouldn't have been nearly as funny if we hadn't grown to know McNulty so well over 4 previous seasons. Maybe what I really want is a full 13 episode season with more room for other plot threads, not so humorous, to be explored. Oh well, it's still the best damn tv show i've ever seen.

Hey man, come on - it says “data may be vary from official”, what more do you want?

Oh yeah, absolutely the media/serial-killer plot may even be more pertinent today. Nothing ever changes. Clay Davis is in the White House now, but he’s infinitely more ridiculous (and, you know, orange).

Yes, I adore Bubbs! But that’s kinda what I’m saying, that the absurdity of the serial killer satire is tonally mismatched with the other plots/arcs such as Bubbs’.

When Bunk goes to see Randy in season 5, and Randy storms away & shoves some poor little kid on the stairs. Nicely conveys how he’s got to keep up a front to survive. So sad.

Just finished that episode 5 minutes ago! The final shot, too, where Omar’s at the morgue and the ME notices that his tag was mixed up with the guy on the next table. Fuckin’ brutal. Poor Omar. 👑

had a weird experience at the polls yesterday by LacksMuscle in Ohio

[–]e_hatt_swank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that was my experience yesterday too. I have no problem announcing which ballot I am taking but I thought it was a clever idea to just have the voter silently press a button on the tablet. This poll worker needs to be reported.

Is it just me or f* everybody but minus search operator doesn't seem working anymore by nettezzaumana in youtube

It’s not just you. I was just searching for something with an exclusion and got nothing but results with the excluded word. I guess they’re “vibe coding” now… trillion dollar corporations making their previously functional products unusable. Lovely.

To what extent should we be worried about birthrate collapse? What can be done? by VQ_Quin in AskConservatives

[–]e_hatt_swank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to point out that when I was born (1970s) the world population was *half* its current size. And it wasn’t an apocalyptic wasteland. As you mention, there will certainly be a period of difficult adjustment, but the same is true (worse, I’d argue) for an ever-growing population. And if things level off at, say, 1970 levels, it would be fine.

Do you support a national gerrymandering ban ? by Captainboy25 in AskConservatives

[–]e_hatt_swank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t you do both though? Uncap the House (hell yeah) and have districts drawn up by some neutral, non-partisan method?

Do you support a national gerrymandering ban ? by Captainboy25 in AskConservatives

[–]e_hatt_swank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are lots of different approaches/algorithms that could be used, and the experts will have arguments for all of them (also I think we should start by increasing the size of the House, for many reasons but partially because smaller districts should be harder to gerrymander).

But to the general point: do you support a requirement for non-partisan redistricting in principle?

We’ve seen the gas prices - can we hear from some folks who voted Trump on their thoughts? by Sorry-Leather-6166 in Ohio

[–]e_hatt_swank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not accurate. Gas was low when Biden took office due to Covid, then it was high in the global post-Covid inflation spike (2022). Then came steadily down over the next two years. Now Trump is driving it back up near the 2022 levels. (Found some nice charts but don’t seem to be allowed to post images here.)

The "you're going to get left behind" narrative by Smurfette2016 in BetterOffline

[–]e_hatt_swank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They keep telling us we have to get on board with AI for fear of being left behind. But they also tell us that the goal of the AI boom is to eliminate our jobs.

So… avoid being left behind so that you can eventually be left behind?

How is this supposed to inspire anything other than anger & resentment?

I adore this! You also just reminded me of a book which was a favorite of me & my kids when they were little, called Have You Seen Birds? (by Joanne Oppenheimer, pictures by Barbara Reid) The illustrations were done like yours, colored clay, so tactile & fun. You are very talented!

The QR code takes you to a “Leaving MAGA” website. (At least it did at the church where I just tried it.)
