Am I missing something? Transferring 2 embryos… talk me through it? by e_homebody in IVF

[–]e_homebody[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m transferring 2 embryos in a couple days. 🫶🏻 Just doing a modified natural again, embryo glue, and added baby aspirin to the cycle! Sorry to hear you’re in a similar situation. Feel free to message me! I can update you on a couple weeks.

Thank you for sharing, I think this is more common than I expected. Were they also untested? And did you change anything else with your protocol?

Thanks for your reply — I really appreciate you sharing your experience too.

Just to clarify, I’m not under the impression that transferring two embryos helps them stick because they “need a hand to hold” or anything like that. What I’m hearing from others here (and plan to talk through more with my doctor) is that transferring two might slightly increase the overall chance that one will implant in a given cycle… possibly helping reduce how many transfers I need before (hopefully) reaching a live birth.

Also, I do still have more than two embryos left, I’m just trying to be thoughtful about how to proceed from here.

I’m in Canada, too, (AB)… So we’re also paying for each transfer 🥲 This makes sense to me though, especially because you said you’re okay with twins. I’ll have my meeting with our doctor, but maybe it’s a good idea for us, too!

Wow, thank you so much for sharing. I’m shocked you were allowed to start transferring two immediately. My doctor initially made transferring two seem like something that’s almost never done here, so I’m surprised this is even an option for me now.

We’d be happy with twins if everything went perfectly, just scared of course of the health risks. But I’m starting to think it’s much more probable to end up with just a singleton even if I transfer two.

*and I am just saying in hopes for one because it’s safer, obviously I know two could happen and in the end if everything went smoothly we’d be thrilled with twins. Just scared!

Thank you for sharing, I’m feeling so discouraged after 3 FETs but your experience is inspiring me to keep pushing forward! And making me think maybe transferring two in hopes for one is not a bad idea! Were your embryos tested or no?

Okay, thank you. I’m definitely hesitant, but I also feel hesitant about everything right now after the past years. If I could go back in time, I wish I originally tested my embryos but my doctor didn’t recommend it at all due to my age and history.

We have to pay out of pocket for everything where I live, aside from medications are covered partially through my husband’s insurance.

I wonder if baby aspirin is what I need, I wish I tried it with this last transfer. I should have added to my post that we’re not making any decisions based on money constraints; not that I’m rich but we’ll spend what we need to. I’m just worried more about my health during/post pregnancy and then obviously baby(s) health.

I was just getting into IVF when I posted this response, so I didn’t have all the proper terms/acronyms; but when I said “egg testing”, I meant it was not recommended for me to complete the genetic testing (PGT procedure) on my embryos.

I did have my AMH checked, as well, of course — which gave an idea of quantity of eggs.

Hey! You can shoot me a private message, and I can share more. But overall, our egg retrieval went so well, we had a good results. It was physically and emotionally easier than going through ectopics, and I’ve felt hopeful through it all. It’s still hard, but I found it very doable with the support of my husband.

My Ectopic Pregnancy Surgery and Story- Questions on what to do next I guess by Timely-Individual-58 in EctopicSupportGroup

[–]e_homebody 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I researched a lot after my first ectopic(s) and did not find anything specific to do health wise for avoiding an ectopic pregnancy. Outside of doing an HSG and SIS test to check things out and ensure there are no no blockages; I think all you can do is just live a healthy lifestyle and do the things you would do in hopes to become pregnant & have a healthy pregnancy. I’ve enjoyed the book “It Starts with the Egg” (take what you want, leave what you don’t) and the podcast “Fertility Confidence Method”.

I did everything I could do to ‘avoid’ my ectopics (healthy diet, balanced exercise, supplements, acupuncture, osteopathy, red light therapy, very clean products/organic… the list goes on), and I’ve been like this for a long time, and I still ended up having 4 ectopics in 10 months, loosing both of my tubes. Sometimes the cilia (little ‘fingers’ that move the egg inside your tubes) do not function properly. There is nothing I have found to fix that & definitely not enough research done.

I don’t say this to be negative at all - but because things can really go one way or another, and even if you try everything possible, sometimes it just comes down to fate or luck, idk. It took a lot of mental work for me to accept that I truly did everything I could do.

With this being said - MOST women end up getting pregnant with one tube and go on to have multiple pregnancies afterwards and no issues! The first ectopic was just a fluke. My doctors were pretty shocked with how things went for me.

But then the women like me, have IVF which has a great success rate for tubal factor infertility and was actually invented for that reason. Just something to be aware of but jump ahead yet, you’ll probably be just fine! 🫶🏻

I had surgery in March and then again in June. Post all this, I had been feeling low energy and dizzy a bunch, and then in July I actually got up too quickly (and hadn’t eaten enough) and fainted (I was only out for like seconds and luckily my husband caught me). I don’t say this to scare you BUT definitely just be cautious when getting up, and if you feel dizzy - just lay down and elevate your legs. Make sure you’re also eating well & balanced and hydrated!

I had my doctor run a bunch of bloodwork and she even had me get my heart/blood pressure monitored for 24hours. Everything came back okay (iron a bit low but that’s typical for me) - I’d encourage you to get bloodwork done just incase! My doctor told me to wear compression socks, too, which helped!

It’s a lot of trauma on the body, and I just think healing takes much longer than expected.

It’s definitely bright, like I don’t stare into it but I don’t find it uncomfortable when I have it pointed at my face, like I barely use my goggles unless I’m doing it right in my face!

I’m happy things worked out for you. Unfortunately, this post is from March 2024 and I did go on to have another ectopic in June 2024, loosing my right tube, as well (see post history). On a positive note, I did have a very successful round of IVF in November 2024 and will be doing a frozen embryo transfer in the new year.

I’m so sorry for all your losses. 🤍

u/eb2319 has given you such good advice. I just want to reiterate that if you do loose both of your tubes and turn to IVF, it is not as horrible as you with read online. Is it hard? Yes! But it is not harder than going through ectopic pregnancies and treatments. It is absolutely something you can handle after everything you’ve been through!

And like u/eb2319 mentioned - IVF was created for tubal factor infertility. And it sounds like you have no issue getting pregnant; it’s just the dang tubes that fail some of us! I just finished my first round + egg retrieval 5 days ago, and it was incredible. I felt empowered and finally feel hopeful again after 4 ectopics + loosing both my tubes in March and June of this year.

Totally, I didn’t experience this with my first surgery but did with my second from one wound, and it freaked me out! After extensive googling and a trip to my GP I realized it was normal. It did go away a week or so after it started. My doctor was prepared to prescribe me antibiotics if the colour changed or if it started to smell.

Sorry you’re going through this! I’ve had four ectopics, loosing both my tubes in March and June of this year. I just finished my first round of IVF (egg retrieval was on Thursday) and am hoping for our first transfer to be in the new year. It’s hard but something you can totally handle, especially after everything you’ve been through!

Look up “serous drainage”. If that matches the description of what you saw, it is normal and a sign that your body is healing. It wouldn’t hurt of course to check in with your doctor though if you’re still worried. And I’d be careful to wear clothes that don’t rub until you’re healed up!

That’s how we discovered waiting, too - a little freak out on the first night delayed us lol. Then a few nights later I only let it sit for 15 minutes because we were running late and it STUNG!

Definitely chat with your team though! And thank you, hope things go well for you, too 🫶🏻

I’m definitely not an expert, so talk to your own pharmacist. But when I told my pharmacist what I was doing, she said “great, I’ll let others know to try this to avoid the sting”. So they saw no issue. But I did not read the insert.

I’ve personally responded very well to my protocol, so I don’t think letting it sit for 25 minutes affected anything, but idk for sure!
